I have not read the books, but my wife says Half-Blood Prince is the best with Order of the Phoenix a close second.

Movies will look very different yes. Book 7 honestly maybe should be lower but it was nice to see a conclusion.

Reread HP last years and 4/5 were easily the high point by a lot. 5 takes it for having the best character drama in the series (Cho Chang aside).

Order of the Phoenix was easily my least favorite and I'm surprised to see the love itt

I also see Goblet overtook Prisoner. Odd.

For me, it's:

Likewise. I felt it would've been fantastic if it had been truncated by 150 pages (US edition), but the padding instead rendered it dull.

3 and 4 was when Rowling hit her stride. And 7 is a pretty thrilling conclusion. But the rest of the books are just okay, and I think there's a reason I've barely cared about Harry Potter since like 2013.

honestly one of my favorite parts of Book 5 was the stuff about OWLs and the grading system.

was also the first one where i read on release day

Are you all just rating 7 the lowest because of the epilogue? Because I dislike the epilogue too, but the adventure feel of the book itself, the overall grand scale of their quest and the fact that they were essentially fending for themselves was all stuff I loved.

honestly i just remember 7 the least. i've read 1-5 so many times that i remember a lot of the small details about certain scenes. and in my memory 7 just kind of...happened. i don't have the same attachment to like...any of the scenes unlike all the other books where i've read certain parts over and over. i actually forgot about the epilogue when doing my rankings but now that it's been mentioned 7's staying at the bottom for sure lol

i guess i like the Hogwarts stuff a little too much. just the sense of discovery about the world was one of my favorite things about the series. part of why i rate 1 so highly. 4 expanded the scope in a huge way to include communities outside of the British wizarding world and 5 just goes into detail about aspects of the universe that were previously mentioned like seeing what the MoM was really like and the aforementioned OWLs. and there's a lot of other scenes/details i really like the trial and finding out Dumbledore's full name, Harry finding about Figg, Fred and George's creative process for their eventual store, Neville's parents, Lockhart(!) coming back, Snape's memories, more Quidditch, aaaaaaaaaahhh so many things. and of course everything Umbridge-related.

7 was somehow boring despite the stakes. It's only not the worst because 6 was awful.

deathly hallows by far.

order of the phoenix is my second favorite. haven't read it in ages so perhaps my opinion would change if i reread it now but i was never bored reading it, which is more than i can say for half-blood prince. i'm sure it's a slog to get through if you dislike emo harry, though.

I never liked the "meta plot" of Harry Potter; it was always my feeling during books 1-6 that you could basically lose the whole Voldemort side of things and only improve the books by doing so. Obviously a book that's almost 100% stuff I don't like ends up last.

And the epilogue is bad, but it wouldn't be book-ruining on its own.

OOTP was my favorite. I wouldn't rank 7 low, but I was always bothered by the way everything related to Hogwarts just gets discarded. Like there are so many patterns and rhythms that the first six books set up, and then when you get to the last one to see how any of that will pay off, it's just "lol nope." I know that none of what I'm talking about was really "important," but seeing how all of the yearly Hogwarts stuff changed year to year gave the books a great flavor.

I think I enjoyed Half-Blood Prince the most. Probably because I was about the age of the cast then at the time of release/when I read it, so it resonated a bit more idk?

also because teenage me was 110% an edgelord so a lot of the late story stuff were developments i liked
