https://www.neogaf.com/threads/belated-july-number-crunching-npd-2005.59291/

I came across this old report of July 2005's NPD numbers, and was shocked to see that FFVII was still selling 7,495 units a month by this point, 4 years after the PS2's launch. Hell, even FFT is listed as selling over 2,000. That seems too high to just be stores selling off the last of their unsold copies. I know that the PS1 had a long tail end, but I would have thought that any older games would have stopped being made by this point, but I guess they must have been. I doubt anyone has an actual answer to this, but just something I found interesting.

Edit: This is more copies than FFX sold that month!

there's like one episode where she won't date an anti-abortion guy because of his stance on abortion (seems reasonable to me). and that's like...it? literally can't think of another example. and that example doesn't constitute "radical feminist" either, more like "normie woman"

anyway lol ulti

Not to mention, the show is kind of making fun of her for having this attitude anyway.

I'm sure there's lots of people who went to Harvard who have student loans, but the real issue comes from the next tier(s) down, IIRC. I don't have any first hand experience, but my understanding is that Ivy leagues, and other schools at the top tier are actually very generous with financial aid, because their reputation depends on having the top students, regardless of ability to pay. It's when you get to the schools that don't care (and you don't have to go that far for this, tbqh) that the crisis starts spiraling.

Or at least this was the case a couple years ago.

Huh, I'm surprised you can buy those. I would have thought that it fell under the same loophole as "It's a Wonderful Life," where the movie itself is public domain, but because the short story it's based on is under copyright still, the movie's sale/screening is still restricted.

I'm going to have to go with Garfield. He's more recognizable to younger people and the global population is relatively young. If Garfield was unknown to people over a certain age/in a certain region that might change things, but I don't think that's the case.

Is Peanuts/Snoopy even that popular outside of the US/Western Europe? I'll gladly be proven wrong, but it seems like such an American property to me, I'd be surprised to find out that it's more popular than Garfield in like East Asia or elsewhere.

I'm also reading that HBO Max might get replaced and folded into Discovery+ with a focus on reality shows. Do they honestly think they can keep subscribers that way? The highest viewed shows on a streaming platform are not necessarily why people subscribe to the platform in the first place. How does a media executive not realize this? People enjoy vegging out to reality programming, but the specific programming is mostly irrelevant, so no one is going to sign up to a streaming service to get more of it. There's most likely sufficient programming in whatever service they already use.

When it comes to streaming vs. theatrical arguments, and which is more profitable, I feel as if Disney completely misread the situation with Encanto. They looked at its "disappointing" theatrical numbers vs. its great streaming numbers as discrete, independent events, and then decided to lean into streaming (except for an already established property like Lightyear). This completely ignores the fact that Encanto probably did so well on streaming because it was released theatrically first and built up hype for the home release. The two release models can work together to create a hit; they don't need to always be in opposition.

In regards to movies outside of the franchise/fandom umbrella, I'm not sure. Most of the high profile "prestige" dramas from last year ran straight into Omicron/lingering effects of Delta, so it's hard to say. There is a school of thought that with the constant churn of pop culture these days it might be best to put something out as wide as possible right away, but paradoxically, I think the opposite might be true. People are so used to "the next big thing" coming and going so fast, that if something lingers around longer, it raises people's attention. Everything Everywhere All At Once used this strategy to great effect. We'll have to see if anyone else can replicate it.

Theaters probably aren't physically able to alter a film file they receive, even if they wanted to. I don't know the logistics of how it works exactly for each theater, but the projectors are just playing the film back like a DVD player plays a DVD. They don't have editing function.

I can't even fathom that something in my life was 20 years ago, but that's what it's been. This is honestly the longest I've ever been part of a community (outside of family), or followed a project/series, and while these contests might not be the most serious thing in the world, I'm sure they've had a serious effect on my world. What I think about games, statistics, or even just myself have been shaped by my time here, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Here's to 20 years of blowouts and nailbiters, rallies and stuffers, kiddies and carriers, lettuce and eggplant! Let's hope for 20 more!

Archiving the game, and then special interest boards, while still locking them was a mistake. Yes, I know that plenty of other communities don't purge message board topics, but as a general rule you can still post in their topics indefinitely. The combination of archiving/locking completely stifled communication, which then led to a collapse in the userbase/community. Yes it eliminated "repetitive conversations" but contributing to those repetitive conversations was probably the reason 90% of people made their accounts in the first place.

Yeah, I don't think the Romero/Albion claims are real either. Whomever was stuffing in Kefka/Vercetti most likely had to practice first, as in the Ganondorf/Yuna match a couple days earlier Yuna kept getting random vote spikes every hour on the hour (or at some specific time hourly), and people surmised that someone was testing out stuffing possibilities.

Kefka Vs. Vercetti deserves a mention too for being one of the few times votes were removed. It made me distrust "statistical analysis" of vote trends to a degree, as I remember people insisting that the BARRIERS vote trends were completely statistically sound, and not a sign of cheating.

You also had the George Romero interview afterwards where he claimed to have previously stuffed for Samus against Sonic, Mario against Cloud and Crono in 2002/03, and for Crono against Mario in 2004, IIRC. He also claimed to have tried stuffing against Starcraft, but that there was an even more powerful force stopping him from having any effect, lol.

Rallies aren't fun for me, because the main appeal to these contests is predicting things, and there's no way to predict them. It's like a mystery novel, or the plot twist in the movie. Of course, being surprised is fun, and I want to be surprised in these contests too, but a good plot twist is something that you could have seen coming, not something that feels random, and the same is true for rallies, to an extent. It's like when a book/movie reveals a killer and it's just some background character you know nothing about. It's unexpected, but the response is just "Oh, I guess."

The issue isn't that most Republican voters actively want an authoritarian government. Most don't. It's that they simply don't care about democracy. I find it deeply offensive on a personal level too, but that's what it is. Even on a purely pragmatic level they think that nothing will happen to them under such an authoritarian system, and unless things led to a civil war, they're probably right. Standards of living for the establishment right stayed perfectly fine in Germany and Italy and Chile (and probably did in Spain as well once recovery from the war was over.)
