I hate to break it to you all but the PS3, 360, and Wii are also all retro consoles now. The gamers in the younger part of the peak customer base for the industry were not even born when they launched.

I dont think consoles that only stopped being produced 4-8 years ago can be considered retro.

We've reached a point (in at least console gaming) where there isn't a huge visual difference between the current and previous generation.

I'd argue that the jump in graphics between the PS5 and PS3 is smaller than the PS3 and PS2.

The next big step in gaming will be VR which will push more people to consider the HD consoles to be retro.

Retro may not be the right word, but people do consider Wii/PS3/360 games old already.

I guess it's a matter of semantics, but going purely by one psychology of "retro" gaming (ie, the desire to play something that they grew up with or reminds them of a simpler era), Wii/PS3/360 is absolutely there already.

I guess we have to consider what is considered classic rock these days too since the ones from twenty years ago are around what the 80s stuff was twenty years back

Heard a classic rock station play Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Seven Nation Army and felt conflicted

I agree with the sentiment that "retro" and similar terms can oftentimes refer to a particular style or group of titles rather than simply "____ years ago." For example,Turner Classic Movies has been on the air for almost 30 years, and in all that time I can bet you the median age of the movies shown has barely shifted forward at all, and certainly not by 30 years. There is a certain corpus of titles that are considered "classic film" or "classic Hollywood," (Everything pre-1967, and selected titles from 1967-1980) and that hasn't really changed much. Film does have a particularly locked in canon though, to be fair.

I split my top song list into 14 general genre playlists and realized I probably should have gone with 'traditional rock' over 'classic rock' as a label. There are definitely modern bands that play to a classic rock aesthetic. The Black Keys or The White Stripes make more sense to me on a classic rock station than, say, Nirvana, even if Nirvana are older and more influential. But that's only because I associate 'classic rock' with an emphasis on guitars (so a lot of stereotypically 'classic rock' bands didn't end up on my classic rock playlist, either...)

I think I thought of Gen 6 as "first modern" just because of the significant removal of hardware limits. 7 is I guess a lot closer to what we have now but it's a lot closer to 6 than 6 was to 5. Incidentally I've heard "PS2 game" and "360 game" used now to denote a certain archaic quality in visuals or game complexity.

It's a fairly loose rule, and I do think that there is some kind of a curve by which older games became retro more quickly than newer games. For example, as Chain pointed out, the PS360Wii are now old, and in fact, all three will be 15 years old by the end of the year (360 hit it last year). Obviously the later titles from that gen aren't retro yet, but if I were hosting some sort of retro gaming channel on Youtube or something like that, I wouldn't object to spotlighting Wii Sports at this point.

In the clothing/car/art/furniture world 20-99 years is considered vintage while "retro" is a style. So Octopath Traveler despite coming out in 2018 could be considered a retro game while everything from 2001 and before would be considered vintage.
