The movie is bad but you should watch it since it introduces the main character, like skull said. Watch in regular order, chronological seems very weird for something that's blatantly an anthology and mostly in order to begin with. All you really get is a few arcs reordered and more bad episodes popping up in your later viewing.

This topic was a fascinating read but I don't think I could ever come up with a definitive listing like this, even if it was cut down to like, 25. I know my top 3 of all time for sure, but beyond that I feel like I can only do broad "best in class" statements like "best character action," "best precision platformer," "best third person shooter," "best traditional JRPG" and stuff like that.

Celeste absolutely deserves to be up this high - all this time later I'm still blown away every time I pick it up. The overall game design is at a level that's really difficult to even discuss if you're not the type of optional content-chasing lunatic referenced in the write-up, but it's no exaggeration to call it head-and-shoulders above every single other entity in the 2D platforming genre. It really is that good.

I personally think Zero Mission is better than Super Metroid! The game just plays so much better it's not even funny. Super gets a ton of credit for literally making the genre the way it is but at this point there are many games (Zero Mission included) that do what it did straight up better.

I would say the actual text of the game in a meta, "talking directly to the player" way, not just in-universe maintains a pretty strong stance that Genocide is the "wrong" way to play.

Hell yeah! It makes me super happy when people end up going way down the Yakuza rabbit hole, so I'm thrilled you ended up liking it this much. You've still got a crazy good game ahead of you with Judgment/Judge Eyes, too. (Also ^5 for the Akiyama love, he's so damn good.)

Great Plateau is legit the best designed area in BotW. After that the sheer openness of the game means they have to start making compromises in purposeful design.

Twilight Town >>> Destiny Islands

The magic of not knowing wtf is going on is a bit lost beyond the first play, but the way it slowly transitions your character from KH1 mechanics (baton) to somewhere in between (keyblade) to actual KH2 combat (the Axel fight) and then gives you Sora at the end of it all is a true thing of beauty. The only game I can think of that even remotely compares to this style of introduction for core systems is Astral Chain. (Not to say either of these is the answer to the topic, aka the best, but they're unique as all hell.)

Battle system is very fun and the feeling of growth throughout the game is awesome. Overall tone and theming are really one of a kind as well, though whether you'll like that tone and theming (and likely the game in general) is up to how open you are to idol stuff.

Undertale is so cool conceptually and has really fantastic moments but I'm still not sure its main gimmick really works. Like people stress so much that you should just "play naturally" and most of the game's coolest "gotcha" moments come from killing some people and sparing others... but like, why would anyone ever play that way?

It's pretty obvious from the get-go (even marketing aside, which flat out says you don't have to kill anyone) that killing isn't the "best" way to play, so I'm at a loss at to why anyone would land somewhere in the middle - perhaps Toriel aside since, funny enough, she's really the only relatively obscure spare in the game. The only way I see it working is if someone has zero game awareness and ignores the mercy mechanic entirely but doesn't grind quite enough to end up on Genocide, then replays the game sparing everyone, but that's a pretty particular scenario for what's supposed to be the game's main hook.

Not that it's exactly the same but this is what Clone Wars does for all of its opening narration. Also yeah Episode III really makes you think of it, too.

I feel this for sure. I used to have a pretty big completionist leaning but yeah, I also discovered at a certain point that all it was giving me was burn out. I didn't play as many games as I could, and those I did play I enjoyed less because at a certain point they just started to feel like work - and there's already enough work in my life. Games should be fun!

Granted, I do still go for 100% in games I absolutely fall head over heels in love with, but those are few and far between, and never feel like a pain to play.

Fallen Order reminded me a lot of Darksiders in that there's not an original bone in its body - and yet somehow it works ridiculously well! It was to the point that I can't wait to see more of it in the inevitable sequel, because there's enough obvious improvements there that it could easily go from "really solid Star Wars game" to a potential GotY contender with just some basic sequel stuff.

I would say no, but as long as people are having fun they can do whatever the hell they want, lol. Like, I personally get a huge rush out of being a game as fairly as possible when it's throwing everything it can at me. But if someone else just wants to blast through and make things easy for themselves and they're having fun with that, I'm not going to say that's "wrong" like some weird internet judge of fun.

That's all assuming this is just for fun though. Like if someone was saying they were super great at games because they save crawled through Ninja Gaiden, I'm going to call BS on that, lol.

While you're probably right that Apollo didn't have any super meaningful growth in AA5, the game nevertheless managed the absolute miracle of turning him into a character I like, so it deserves quite a bit of credit for that IMO!

KH2 is to this day the best in the series and one of the best games of its kind so I don't know if age is really the issue for anything other than KH1.

Switch and PS4 are both only for their respective exclusive games. Everything else goes on PC. I suppose for the rare cases where it really is just between these two platforms though I'd go with PS4.

If you're new to the game you should 100% get the characters before the song packs. They give a ridiculous amount of content that you'll take ages to play through.

I think the bundle sale may be over for now but it's apparently opening again either on Xmas eve or Xmas day, so you'll have a chance at it very soon.

I got way too excited when I saw the Cytus 2 character bundle go live. Never pulled the trigger on a purchase so fast, C2 is the first time I've felt like a mobile game deserves a "full" purchase like that.

Just got back and uh, Jesus tapdancing Christ that movie was a complete mess. There are so many things about it that had me holding my head in my hands, and I'm saying that as someone who enjoyed both TFA and TLJ during my first viewings. I think more than any of the others this movie felt straight up like weird fan fiction given a crazy budget.

Literally any movie you've ever heard of has this intent, yes. Not that it's at all a bad thing, but don't delude yourself into thinking any art that's marketed exists for its own sake. (Least of all multimillion studio productions)

The low level stuff is where most of Star Wars' truly good storytelling happens, but the contrast against the space wizardry of the "main" story has always helped it be extra cool. Rogue One is a particularly strong example of this.

DMC5 is the best one so yes you should like it.

It feels like what we could have gotten if the DMC4 team had all the time and money in the world to work on the game, but even better because Itsuno and his team have a firmer grasp of the genre's mechanics than ever.

They said it on their stream (the source of the video). They're using their own in house engine for the game now.

Ah, that is indeed unfortunate. The first trailer absolutely looked better but of this is still early in (the new) development then I think I can stay optimistic. Still sucks that a game that looked that good out of the gate had to get hit hard by development drama.

Do you have a source on that, Mac? I've been following this reasonably closely and while Platinum is indeed off the project as of February, all I've ever heard is that they kept all of their work and continued on with the project without them. (General thinking also seems to be that Platinum had already finished a great majority of their most important work.)

The pre-boss stuff doesn't doesn't look quite as unbelievably awesome as the initial wind dungeon gameplay we saw, but the boss fight looks straight up fantastic. Glad to see this is still looking good after this long stretch of silence!

Whenever B8 maps out its console buying sensibilities I'm continuously surprised there aren't more PC gamers here. Guessing price is the main issue for most folks, which is fair, I suppose.

PlayStation is planning to release their games on PC also now I think.

Nothing remotely confirmed as far as new titles go but yeah there's been some buzz on this and some older Sony-published titles already released to perhaps lend the idea credence. (Journey, Heavy Rain, etc)

I hope they do open up! Hardware should be sold on its actual merits IMO, not based on who takes the best hostages.

He said to sacrifice design for power. This gave the console the most power. They want the strongest console.

And they'll likely have it! Still expect them to be in a similar position as they've been this gen, though. I respect MS's business strategy more than either of the other Big 3 members but their very open approach means they have literally no true exclusives (at minimum, everything they do comes to PC now) which unfortunately are what get people to buy branded hardware.
