I loved her character (minus the lame casino side quest) and wanted more. They should have learned their lesson from benching SITH LORD JAR JAR that listening to the whiny fans is a bad idea. Palps telling Kylo to kill Rey but he needed Rey all along but he needed both of them all along. Like...what? I ignored most of this because I love me some Palps. But still. The "plan" was all over the place. The Knights of Ren. They ended up being about as fodderific as the Pretorian Guards in TLJ. In fact, they put up more of a fight. They might as well have been the Knights instead. One thing I've noticed is that the sequels actually end up causing me more displeasure outside of the films themselves. I rewatched the original trilogy recently and I couldn't help but enjoy them less with the knowledge that it's all pointless. The victories they've won won't matter in the sequels, and all the heroes are going to die miserably. It's really hard to watch the ending to Return of the Jedi with any sense of hope knowing that now the First Order is going to rise and destroy all the peace that everyone fought so hard for, that Han and Leia are going to give birth to a mass murderer and end up bitter and separated, and that nearly all the new Jedi are going to be purged again. Here it is: I think Im gonna end up seeing Rise of Skywalker on an airplane at some point, on the back of the seat in front of me. Thats about my interest level. There were inklings of it in the first movie, if you want to go back that far, but it really seems like the new trilogy wasnt conceived of as a trilogy at all. Its genuinely hard to believe. And not just because of what Disney managed to accomplish with their Marvel project, making an ecosystem of movies in different genres and then somehow crafting a kind of metamovie to conclude it. Obviously, they can do it. That they didnt - and that they expected us to go along with it - is incredible. Star Wars isnt Holy to me. Like a lot of people who grew up when I did, I do like it. But theres a hard cap on precisely how disappointed I can be in it. Seeing the whole thing transformed into some kind of cultural shibboleth when it can barely hold itself together narratively film to film, its like these movies arent up to the task. It doesnt even matter what task you had in mind. A full-throated defense of these things is either unconscious, freelance PR, corporate ring-kissing, or invertebrate worship of a graven idol. My thoughts after seeing twice have been that it is an incredibly watchable movielightning pacing, fun action, some humorbut if you hold it up to any scrutiny at all, the whole thing comes crashing down. Star Wars movies have always meant to be fun romps, but TROS takes that to such a degree that you cant even take away any sort of message or morsel of deeper meaning from it all, because its sort of unconcerned with being anything else but a ride. The worst thing it did was make Rey a conduit for twists and audience winking instead of building on the great stuff The Last Jedi laid out. Well, that, or totally failing to land the idea of the Force Dyad in the last battle by just making Kylo sort of irrelevant? God, its so frustrating when you even just scratch the surface of anything they did! Shame it was that one and not one of the other two. I tried reading him the third one but by then he was at the age where he wanted to grab the book and would get bored and crawl away. Even though I have no investment in this franchise, I find it sad that it's devolved into this giant battlegrounds it's become and I wish that Disney could have created movies that would have pleased everyone. To me, it seems like the problem starts with that Kathleen Kennedy and the fact that they made a trilogy without any sort of plan in mind. Like, you don't have a plan for a giant story for your trilogy for the biggest IP get you could possibly receive, and as a result it's a fucking mess. Why are people putting so much investment and care into it when even Disney and those in charge of this didn't put any care into these movies?
