i regret not making multiple save files at different points though so i don't have to play through all the other parts to get to the part i want to replay sometimes

I liked it a lot more than the general consensus seemed to.

I gave ff13 a real shot. It has the worst writing I have ever seen. Non sequiturs, nonsense vocabulary, clumsy pauses. Nothing makes sense unless you look everything up on a wiki ahead of time

It has the dumbest boss battles- waaay too long, and with vague, arbitrary triggers that cause the entire fight to be reset when you get them wrong the first time.

On the other hand, it has beautiful art direction

The music and art style was fantastic, but that's about it.

Story was ok, but not on par with most other FFs I played.

I'm gonna be honest, I really hated the gameplay. One of my favorite things about Final Fantasy in general is how good the franchise is at keeping you engaged with such basic gameplay. Most of them either constantly introduce new character classes or have a ton of customization. Sometimes both. XIII holds both from you for so long that by the time you get it you just want to rush to the end of the game. However if you do that you get stonewalled with ridiculous spikes in difficulty and then it's back to grinding with overly long battles.

Saying this game has pacing issues would be an understatement.

I thought the battle system was fun. I liked combining and rotating between classes and characters to break and launch enemies. It kept you engaged in the fights. It's kind of annoying how it regularly blocks advancement until near the end of the game. I don't grind anyway, so it didn't really hold me back, but I can understand why others would hate it.

I think my issue with the battles lies more in their length than the fun. I agree coming up with different class combos was cool and breaking an enemy always felt super rewarding. Once you hit late game though the enemies start becoming more tanky and there's a ton of them, so it feels more like padding to make the game longer.

Characters were likable enough. As a big fan of FFX I didnt mind the linearity. I still feel like I didnt fully understand the battle system besides the basic RPS of the different fighting styles.

I would like that re-release, hopefully on Switch like with FF12.

Interesting, my opinion is the exact opposite. XIII is my tied third/fourth favourite (along with VIII) but XIII-2 felt too convoluted with the time travel plotlines (although the addition of capturing monsters was awesome).

Yes I liked all things considered. Not the best game ever but definitely the best FF game since IX

I honestly didn't like the monster capturing aspect of XIII-2. I'd have rather had a real character for the third party member.

And Noel is the worst male protagonist in the series, and that's saying something considering Vaan exists. Serah is awesome though.

Still need to play LR one of these days.

Yeah, my main problem with XIII's story is that they come up with an interesting concept with the Fal'cie branding people and forcing them to fulfill their Focus or suffer a fate worse than death, but then Square seemingly backed themselves into a corner and couldn't realistically come up with a way for the heroes to get out of it. As a result, we get an ending that feels like a deus ex machina and doesn't make much sense.

worst farming experiences of all time. Still a fun game! Also fondly recall Lightning Returns, 13-2 less so.

13 trilogy stands along the Xenosaga trilogy as games I want to replay but am holding out for remaster re-releases. Though 13 trilogy is way more likely to eventually happen, and certainly replayable now on the PS3 anyways... moreso than the PS2... my kingdom for Xenosaga trilogy remaster, or even just a straight port on a modern system god dammit.

Same, all you gotta do is make a save at the beginning of chapter 11 and you're set, really. Doing everything then instead of post-game is a pretty great challenge too! I also remember having a save before the first Barthandelus fight, good times...

This is almost completely backwards lol. XIII-2 was the worst. The battle system was pretty good, but capturing monsters as a third party member was lame. Noel was fine but Cais was meh. The ending was the worst fucking thing ever that completely soured any goodwill I had towards the game.
