big drop off after the first four for me. the original trilogy has always been a sentimental favorite; I felt like TFA knocked it out of the park and was really a fun throwback to those times that did everything right. TLJ was a weird and kind of stupid mess, Solo was so much less than what it could have been, Rogue One was a bit of a slog to get through, and the less said about the prequels the better.

although it's only placement relative to the prequels

at first I almost thought about putting it last

how weird is my ranking. this is mostly based on rewatching the series just prior to The Force Awakens release

I don't really think A New Hope is that special and am always surprised how high it is on lists like this. Jedi has a 10/10 third act but is kind of a slog to get through before it. But goddamn Empire is still spectacular to this very day. Besides the outlier of Empire and despite the mass amounts of nostalgia I have for the original trilogy, I guess I didn't find them all that exceptional. I like Episodes 7 and 8 more than 4 and 6 as individual movies, but the OT feels way better as an actual trilogy than the new one. There's at least something special about that which the new trilogy has not managed to capture.

The Empire Strikes Back almost easily takes the top spot for me - the only thing the original film has over it for me is being faster-paced. I would even sooner consider ranking Return of the Jedi over the original since it felt like it still carried over a lot of what made Empire better, but I feel like not doing so because ROTJ has like no ambition and is basically a feature-length Act 3, though what an Act 3 it is! Anyway, I give the nod to the original over ROTJ because without it you wouldn't have the franchise.

I vaguely remember liking The Force Awakens when it came out but not thinking much of it otherwise, and reflecting back on it the film had quite some leaps in logic, but I get the feeling I might still like it. Didn't care for The Last Jedi but found it more unengaging than bad. Was very disappointed in Rogue One but it wasn't really all that bad in hindsight, just not very good is all. Don't like what I've seen of Solo and it has been too long since I saw the prequel trilogy.

very hard to say since there are emotions wrapped up in them all. instinct tells me 5 > 4 > 6 > 7 > 8 > 3 > 2 > 1, but that's biased by a lot of conventional wisdom, plus not having seen most of the movies in a loooong time.

if it's based on how i felt seeing them, then it's judged relative to hype, expectations, and how much i care about the franchise (decreasing since 3): 6 > 5 > 7 > 1 > 2 > 8 > 4 > 3

and in terms of how eager i am to rewatch, which is fairly independent of quality and much more based off recency/memeability: 4 > 5 > 3 > 7 > 2 > 1 > 8

It's not crazy when you consider it's actually not.

It would have been more palatable if they had either cast a Han Solo who even faintly resembles Harrison Ford (not even necessarily physically, but in terms of stage presence) or if they had just made a movie where the guy isn't actually Han Solo

Most people rate Empire better than A New Hope, but IV is easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

None of the prequels are good, but I like Phantom Menace more than most people do (Darths and Droids really helps make it more palatable).

I had a hard time deciding whether Attack of the Clones was worse than The Force Awakens, but in the end I decided that while VII wasn't as excruciatingly bad, its unoriginality made it a lot less interesting. The Last Jedi is just plain awful in every metric though.

I rewatched Last Jedi just now just to be sure, but yeah, still a masterpiece IMO.

It always shocks me that people don't like it, even though I understand the explanations about why they don't like it. Just coming to movies for different things, I think.

Empire Strikes Back also always shocks me, that people worship it so hard. That one just feels like random meaningless events, never understood what's so great. I still like it a lot though.

Even if you dont like the plot and writing in TLJ, the prequels are true dumpster fires of acting and dialogue. It is actually remarkably bad. None of the Disney era movies have that problem.
