Damn, Bone Tomahawk is the one movie that makes me wish I was able to finish my write-ups for this project, even if I wouldn't have made that much of a difference. Loved reading these reactions though! Even the most hardcore of horror fans can get turned off by the scalping and bisection so I can't imagine not even being into the genre in the first place. The atmosphere is spectacular, I love how you can feel every agonizing second of the journey, you get to know all of these characters' flaws and insecurities, and how it baits you with false antagonists, before it absolutely explodes into the viscerally intense horror which goes way beyond simple death scenes with something much more indescribably grotesque, a twisted reflection of humanity's darkest urges in the era it's portrayed and beyond.

Overwatch

I was and still am a big COD fan, so I really wasn't feeling this more team-based strategy approach to FPS at first. I even played the beta and didn't dislike it per se, but it also didn't light my world on fire. I still took a chance and bought the full game and well now I think it's one of the best MP experiences of all time.

It's very easily the worst mainline entry. It still blows some of the terrible spin-offs out of the water though. I used to hate it too, playing it would actually make me sick due to the terrible camera mixed with the chaotic action. I reevaluated it some years later with the improved camera, and actually found it pretty fun! The combat actually has a ton of depth to it which especially comes out in Mercs. Quickshooting, sprinting into a slide then reversing it, all the crazy melee moves with everyone having their own unique moveset, dual-wielding, damn it's like they made a character action game out of RE, coming full circle with DMC. I totally get why people hate it, there are truly terrible elements like all the vehicle segments, QTEs, tedious boss fights, but I do see a lot of the game's positives now more than I used to.

Resident Evil 6 is such a totally convoluted web of events that you have to be a total diehard RE fan already if you want to even begin to get into it. The campaigns are certainly uneven but for better or worse they grab insanity by the reins and run with it all the way. Look I'm totally biased here; I love these characters, Chris facing down Wesker's son or Jake and Sherry (easily the strongest story for me) taking up the legacy of their parents before them hits me right in the fanservice. I think this game does Chris & his PTSD in a surprisingly compelling way, with a strong ending. Leon & Helena is mostly rote but there's enough substance from his relationship with Ada to still keep things interesting. Honestly though, there are definitely parts I don't like. Everything with Ada, her clones, and Simmons is terrible. I think it totally blows her character. And in typical RE fashion, almost none of the plot threads from this game have been expanded on since. I'm always going to love RE lore and its storytelling no matter how dumb it gets, and this is a well directed, well voiced, and ambitious story that doesn't always nail what its going for, but I appreciate the effort nonetheless.

It is personally my opinion that a truly excellent film combines all elements of the production and that plot isn't truly anymore important that cinematography, aesthetic, performance, etc. There's a film I love called WNUF Halloween Special which advertises itself as a lost 1987 Halloween TV broadcast, and this stylistic choice with realistic period-specific effects and even commercials interjected in creates this wonderful atmosphere for the film which elevates an otherwise generic found-footage plot.

This applies to all mediums for me. Even artworks or sculptures are perfectly capable of telling cohesive stories and can even be adept at using the very canvas the work is on to enhance it. Banksy is probably the most famous example of this, such as when he shredded his sold artwork to give it a transformed meaning.

To me no medium should be confined to any one thing first or foremost; I don't think a film needs a strong plot to be great just in the same I don't think a game needs strong gameplay to be fun. A creator should be free to use a medium how they choose to see fit, and I think it's okay to criticize that if you want to, but I don't think it should be that any one factor should be looked at less than others.

Surprisingly unmemorable for a Rockstar tale. Its strongest suits are by far its rich characters but I struggle to remember most specific plot beats. I think the narrative spreads itself too thin to be truly effective with a meandering lack of focus. It's the kind of story that feels fantastic to follow in the moment, but leaves one rather empty after the credits roll. Context from RDR2 boosts it, but not by much.
