Right? I think it's Flanagan's best and most complete work. It's genuinely scary, emotionally powerful, the setting and lore is well-realized without being overly complex or lost in its own mysteries, the performances are incredible. It's one of my favorite pieces of TV in a while.

I care! Carrie is definitely great. Well-told coming of age tale under the guise of horror. The cathartic release of Carrie's full rage and power is incredible from both a raw imagery stand-point and for what it all represents, the complete extent of Carrie's emotions become manifest as something to be both feared and pitied to an extent.

The DLC is pretty worth getting! I loved all the Banned Footage stuff it's really unique and has some of the best moments in the whole. The Joe Baker DLC End of Zoe is perhaps RE at its most ridiculous. Not a Hero is probably the weakest of them all but it too has some neat ideas.

Hey I just started watching that last night because of Wendigoon (if you know him)! Good series definitely creepy so far, excited to see where it goes. Analog horror is seriously one of my new favorite genres in horror so it's great when I find a new good one.

I enjoyed 2 episodes and even then they weren't the best. One was about a cursed/lost film which I enjoyed on concept and the other was a pretty typical plot about a devil baby. The rest of the show is laughably terrible, it's nearly as bad as The Twilight Zone reboot.

I replayed PE last year because it reminded me of the pandemic, and I don't think I ever loved it as much as I did during that playthrough. The friggin' music especially.

A great rec to go along with PE is another Survival Horror-RPG, Koudelka. The combat is turn-based strategy but it leans more heavily into survival horror than even PE does, you have to conserve weapons for harder enemies otherwise you will be fucked. It has an amazing story too with well-detailed character personalities (Koudelka herself should be a survival horror icon if you ask me), and the story is sort of a mix of medieval Gothic fantasy and Lovecraft. You might know this but it's also the first game in the Shadow Hearts series.

I'm also going to throw out a rec for Hellnight (Dark Messiah in Japan). It's first-person and there's no combat, you go through maze maps avoiding monsters while also solving puzzles. It's like a very proto Amnesia or Outlast but I think the atmosphere is creepy and the story is interesting, with occult-leanings.

If your're ever looking for more I have a list of every horror game for PS1 right here (it's part of a larger list of almost every horror game ever):

5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It - Fantastic; well, the first act anyway. It goes downhill a bit after that, but never to like La Llorona levels of bad. The main villain wasn't all that compelling and the scariest moments were all pretty early on.

Conjuring 3 really didn't stick with me too hard unfortunately. Shame because I think the first two are spectacular. Though I do still think it's a solid, enjoyable film, I guess the other two had more compelling and fleshed out cases to go on.

My ranking for this year so far:
0. PIG...?!
  1. A Quiet Place Part II
  2. Wrong Turn
  3. Hunted
  4. Saint Maud
  5. Fear Street 1978
  6. Fear Street 1666
  7. Fear Street 1994
  8. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
  9. Spiral
  10. Godzilla vs. Kong
  11. Willy's Wonderland
  12. Koko-di Koko-da
  13. The Forever Purge

never heard of In The Earth but I am looking forward to seeing Old

And nice on the Midsommar thing jc, that's pretty crazy.

I watched The Forever Purge; I didn't hate it but man was it leagues worse than the others. I just felt like it lacked so much passion and weirdness that made the other Purges so enjoyable. And it's like, the premise of it is awful, like this type of thing where people want to keep the purge going should've happened ages ago. And since the movie technically ISN'T about the actual purge it feels like any old generic action apocalyptic movie. And yes the jumpscares were literally some of THE WORST I've ever seen in the whole horror genre. Jesus Christ. I don't even remember the other movies having jumpscares except for the first.

In brighter news, I watched this almost a week ago now but forgot to talk about it: Quiet Place Part 2 was excellent! One of the best intros I've seen in modern horror. Characters are smart and inventive and I even feel like the premise is a lot better served here. The score, direction, and cinematography were all magnificent. The only problem was I feel the ending was a little cut short and also the movie has some weird retcons from the previous film too (like the ending of the first clearly showed a lot of creatures coming to attack the house and in this they're just not there...?)

Escape Room will probably be coming up pretty soon for me and also Omori definitely looks interesting. I tried Maneater but I found it kind of boring unfortunately, but the game did have some great comedy!

Damn sucks to hear about The Forever Purge. I really wanted the series to end on a high note.

I've been really enjoying the Fear Streets! I think there's certainly a tongue-in-cheek element to them it's just not always on the forefront. But honestly it's just some fun horror for me that's just pushing the right buttons currently.

I'm behind on a few new releases but definitely planning to catch up real quick and the second half of the year has some really hyped films coming up.

The Outlast games are two of my favorite games ever. They're a little bit of jump scare horror mixed with psychological & survival horror. I can best describe it as being in a slasher film but cranked up to 11, with a nonstop brutal assault on the senses that never lets up until the credits roll. You will never feel safe anywhere, and even if there's no stalker chasing you, the feeling of paranoia and how the game constantly plays tricks and cruel jokes on the player is enough to make you feel cautious of every step you take, especially true in O2. The atmosphere in both games is superb; though Outlast 2 is my overall favorite game of the pair, the Mount Massive Asylum in Outlast 1 is the gold standard of horror ambiance in video games. Red Barrels truly crafted a claustrophobic puzzle box, a building with nothing but hopelessness and despair around every corner, as lunatics rule the roost and it seems like iron bars and caved in floors make your death seem destined to occur. I think it takes what makes the original RE games so much to fun and memorable explore while taking your defense away allowing you to focus more on tight movement and spotting escape routes.

So yeah I think they're amazing! If you are looking for something more psychological, Outlast 2 is your better bet, I personally put it on a near Silent Hill 2/3 level.

My two cents: I like the three hours worth of music for sure, I personally wouldn't be that into the Mega Man stuff or from the first topic, I think it's best to look towards the future, but it's your rodeo, do what you feel is right & fun.

Oh I knew about the comparisons but had no idea Aronofsky had actually bought the rights. That does make things a little more fishy.

BTW I love your comparison to modern day internet culture!

Yes I noticed it too, I believe it's deliberate to mimic a handheld filmed look.

Perfect Blue

Much like Stephen King's Misery, Perfect Blue is on its surface an examination of the relationship between public figure & the fanatical, & how any privacy, sense of creative passion, and even identity becomes prey to the vultures of gossip and consumerism. Whereas Misery kept events relatively grounded yet seen through the lens of this intense adoration, Perfect Blue punches deeper and deeper into the psychological dread of what it truly means to be the celebratory figure in question. Mima, the pop idol loved by many, makes the decision to quit singing and become an actress, a move largely disliked by that same crowd. From the beginning of the film, you can see the psychological manipulation on display through the gossip of crowds and the marketplace manipulation of so-called collector's items, as if Mima is no longer a person but a commodity ready to be bought-and-sold to the highest bidder. Indeed, Mima is consistently devalued as an individual; rarely are her own feelings brought into account and even things that feel like her own decisions, such as the filming of a rape scene, are just manipulations of what she simply believes she wants. These abstract feelings manifest themselves into what seems like reality for Mima, both through the Mima's Room blogs and her doppelganger, a sprite-like version of Mima with girlish skips and playful intonation that keeps bringing up past memories Mima is so desperate to escape from. This psychological assault can be quite brutal to watch; seeing this form of impostor's syndrome brought up in such a surreal and unnatural manner is compelling and a genuine fear for anyone no matter what field of work they may find themselves in.

It's these layers of reality Perfect Blue ultimately explores so well. Mima's impostor syndrome is absolutely real, but there's no fantasy to be found here. Instead, it's Mima, being gaslighted by her agent Rumi, a former faded pop idol herself, now seeing herself in some way as Mima and wanting her career to turn out perfectly in a way Rumi's own career didn't. This comes down to perfectly replicating Mima's room (which the film cleverly spends time on establishing shots to help the viewer guess the twist early), writing the Mima's Room blog thanks to being so close to her subject in question, and hiding blood-stained clothes from Rumi's killings. It's sickening to think the one Mima trusted the most turned out to be her worst enemy, but it also forces us to examine are own prejudices and pre-conceptions on who we can trust the most. Me-Mania, the security guard who continually appears to stalk Mima throughout the film, is a convenient culprit thanks to his deliberately creepy and ugly appearance, and while he is to blame on some level, is just as much a victim manipulated by Rumi, using his intense fandom to her advantage. Additionally, Rumi's killings can be seen as an attack on dominating male figures in the entertainment industry for controlling Mima, but ironically, through these actions controls Mima's life more than they ever did. This sort of dynamic is rarely explored in fiction and almost never with the same horrific depth as Perfect Blue, going beyond the simple relationship of celebrity/fan and looks more closely at the relationship we have with parental figures, and how they may not always have our best interests at heart even if all signs point otherwise.

While there's so much else to discuss and talk about with this film and its various themes and commentary on the entertainment industry, Perfect Blue to me definitely stands out the most for its truthful viewpoint on celebrity culture and in general, just finding peace in doing what you want to do purely for yourself. It can be tough to break away from all the screaming influences in your life, but in the end, like Mima does, you can carve out your own path, it just may end up being more violent than you had anticipated.

9/10

was it a book thing? i was never into them because i was just too used to the books. and i know the whole 'adaptations should stand on their own' thing but my mind actually can't reconcile the differences lol

No I actually haven't even read the books. I just thought they were stupid and I'm not typically a big fan of fantasy or sorcery-type stuff.

do you have any examples of movies you significantly changed your mind about after revisiting them after a long time?

I despised the Harry Potters almost my whole life until I watched them over the summer last year again and now I think they're friggin' amazing.
