Yeah It can be debated I suppose but it has at least thriller elements. I just think the general sense of uneasiness, its disorienting nightmare scenarios, and some key horror references sprinkled throughout does push it in its favor.

Nice I look forward to that! I've liked most of this year's offerings quite a bit horror-wise.

Ready or Not is a highly enjoyable one but definitely not ground-breaking. It is one of the best lead performances of 2019 however. Surprisingly the recent slate of "game-like" movies have been surprisingly good or at the very least decent, such as Game Night (yeah not horror really but it still fits to me) and Escape Room, even going back a couple of years to Ouija: Origin of Evil. The only really bad stand-out is Truth or Dare.

I only played the demo, TBH it felt clunky & very unpolished but I am interested in getting the console version eventually. Might be more improved hopefully. I've heard some good things from others in the survival horror community though.

I have indeed. It has an extremely bad rap as one of the worst "RE clones" of the era, especially for its voice acting & cutscenes, which I will definitely admit makes RE voice acting look good. However, I think it does some interesting things with its gameplay, my favorite being an aesthetic gun & holy water system that knocks out your enemies and turns them back to humans rather than killing them. And yeah if you have a hankering for fixed-camera exploration I like a lot of the environments in the game too!

Child's play remains my #1 overall for the year, which is probably something abnormal.

I really enjoyed this one a lot too! I wrote it off really badly when it was first announced, even though I despised Cult of Chucky I definitely thought it wasn't fair to reboot a series that is still pumping out successful, decently-received movies. But Child's Play really proved me wrong and I too think it's one of the best horror reboots ever. Mark Hamill was really great as the voice of Chucky and it was so refreshing to actually see a story that's updated to reflect the modern day and not just a rehash of what we already know happens.

In terms of the other films I liked a good bit, I had to move Us down a good deal as I really feel it was a let down from Get Out

I have to agree with this too. Get Out just had a way tighter & simpler focus while still being packed with a whole load of subtleties. Us is for sure interesting and I would say a great film, but you nailed it with the plot holes and definitely the reveal part.

Doctor Sleep

This is one of my favorite sleepers of the year! (no pun intended) I thought Ewan McGregor delivered a fantastic performance especially. Mike Flanagan's direction and also the cinematography is beautiful too, some of my favorite shots of the year are from Doctor Sleep. It also does side characters and villains well, Rose the Hat gets a ton of screen-time and it was interesting to give the main villain almost like a troupe, it actually reminded me of the Series of Unfortunate Events books a lot. It doesn't even use the Shining as much of crutch, except for maybe a couple of parts towards the end (showing the axe door flashback was a little too self-indulgent for my tastes).

Black Christmas

It still baffles me why they keep trying to remake this. The original film was always a cult film, I mean in its nature alone as being antithetical to the Christmas season. I haven't seen the latest yet but from the trailer it looks like a film absolutely designed by committee.

As for 2020, we're off to a shit start with yet another bad Grudge film. I am convinced it is impossible to make a good movie with this property; both the Japanese and American versions of the original aren't exactly masterpieces, in fact I think they kinda suck a bit. This one is a good bit worse though.

If you haven't seen it/have the time I would check out Ju-On: The Curse 2, which recaps the first Ju-On film whilst expanding on those events. I think it's the closest film in the series to actually come close to being great. Unless you count Sadako vs. Kayako which is just a blast!

Haha honestly I can't argue with any of that!

Though one scene I absolutely adore from this decade that would be in my top 10 is from Shin Godzilla, when it shows Godzilla using his atomic breath for the first time. It's one of the reasons I think Shin Godzilla is easily the best film in the series. It once again puts the full horror of nuclear warfare back on display, and portrays Godzilla not only as a force of destruction, but as a victim of nuclear fallout himself; he looks sick and disgusted as he practically vomits up the atomic breath, and then shriveled & sorrowful once the destruction is over. It's simply artful!

Nicely done AHS finale! Surprising amount of blood & gore and really gruesome deaths, the last couple of seasons are kind of a blur but I don't remember there being too much of that. I still think they juggled a little too many plotlines & characters for their own good (one more episode would've been a good choice), but I think it ended as well as it could've. Probably my 4th favorite season overall.

AHS 1984 was pretty good!

I can't wait to find out what the witches, murder house, and cult all have to do with this too as we start to forget about the main camp plot completely.

Woah The Terror season 2 is superb! Fantastic j-horror vibe set against the backdrop of WW2 and Pearl Harbor that deals with the racial subjugation of the Japanese in the America. Also has some body horror that will definitely make you squirm.
