You just have to love the simple sit-up here: a wicked stepmother, a bratty child, going mano-a-mano in a battle of vitriol, and at first, it seems like The Witch Bride is the more vicious of the two, but the story unveils its mysteries confidently and with force, describing the prince's serial killer-esque origins in a way that flips the narrative and character dynamics on their heads, shattering any prior notions or stereotypes the Bride touches upon in her thoughtful monologues. I liken the Witch Bride to the traditions of classic dark fairy tales, only taken up to nightmarish levels of body horror, a wish-granter of our literal, pointless whimperings while we balance on the precipice of true fear. To see our anti-villain get away with it all is just that extra bit of reminder for ourselves that justice comes for all of us eventually, no matter how cruel or violently poetic it may be. Doesn't really count otherwise imo.) He wasn't the first. He certainly wasn't the last. But, he was the best. And that's not even because he was the catalyst for damn near every portrayal to follow. Lugosi's Dracula was purely magnetic, an aristocrat, a well-spoken antagonist that could enjoy engaging in polite conversation just as much as he would enjoy feasting on your blood. Even among his other Universal children of the night, Lugosi's Dracula had a peculiar sophistication to his character, and if all the Universal monsters are different reflections & insights into the human mind, I would definitely mark this version of Dracula as representing our deceitfulness and willingness to betray others through faux-politeness and ulterior motives. I liken his place in the canon to Freddy Krueger's among slashers, a jovial, humor-spouting killer belaying truly sadistic tendencies & sickening methods. Lugosi would go on to avoid the role like a plague however, only reprising it once in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, despite playing similar vampiric characters in other films & even other roles in the Unversal Monster series. I think that was for the best; after all, you only need one legendary film to cement your place in permanent pop culture history forever. Rating: 9/10 --- |
