Cohen and creator Matt Groening have signed on to bring its beloved animated series centered around a space delivery crew in the year 3000 back on the air. Original voice members Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman are all set to reprise their roles. Variety reports that John DiMaggio, who voiced Bender, is not currently attached. However, producers are hopeful DiMaggio will sign back on with the series otherwise the role will be recast. A lot of people (me included) felt like the new seasons weren't anywhere near as good as the original ones (especially the stand-alone movies, which were bleh), and bringing it back kind of ruined what was essentially a perfect series finale. None of the new episodes really did much to justify the revival, and a lot of episodes felt like they were just retreading old ground. Another reboot now will presumably feel even worse and even more pointless. People always think they want more of a thing they love, but often shows that go too long or keep getting rebooted just get more and more tired, with less and less passion and worthwhile ideas, so it starts to feel plodding, dull, and mediocre. Far better to just have a fantastic show that only lasts a few years than an average show that never ends. Plus, there's the added problem that a revival fueled by a streaming service is by its very nature going to have a much more limited audience (ie, anyone who doesn't have or want Hulu won't be able to watch it). And the current success rate of old popular shows revived on streaming services isn't very good - most of them wind up feeling more like terrible nostalgia pandering mediocrity than anything resembling the original success, and they mostly seem to turn out to be fart-in-the-wind afterthoughts that no one gives a shit about six months later. It went from being a quirky show about a local newsroom to a vapid vanity project, that is also somehow real world accurate as to the decline in the quality of news sources since the removal of The Fairness Doctrine in the 80's and the subsequent consolidation of station ownership.
