One asshole in the 1970s (who was probably stoned out of his mind) claimed that was what the Mayans predicted, which was then latched onto by New Age loons and conspiracy theory-type idiots, because they generally lack anything resembling an ability to do actual research or be anything other than credulous gits... and then it got perpetuated as a meme for years, both by stupid people who believed it and by people who thought it was such a stupid idea that it was funny. The Mayan calendar "ending" doesn't really mean much more than the fact that MY calendar "ends" every December 31.
