| Romulox28 12/20/19 4:11:38 PM #8 | rock in the roll came up in the 50s and faded pretty quickly. by the end of the decade, buddy holly was dead, jerry lee lewis was busted for being a pedo, elvis was in the army, etc. most people thought rock was a fad and so when you look at the billboard charts for the early 60s (say pre 64) you have songs like Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" topping the charts, a lot of girl groups, big band music, country, stuff like that. then in 64 the beatles blow up and take over america by storm, all of a sudden rock is back on the menu & bands writing their own music (versus playing standards or having someone else write) is really in vogue. by the end of the decade rock is the dominant genre, you have more subversive acts like The Doors, Cream, Hendrix etc populating the billboard charts, and this leads the way for the 70s. --- |

| Romulox28 12/18/19 10:32:13 AM #22 | the OT sets up luke as the ultimate hero, he grows from a bored teen longing for adventure to the last jedi master, the guy who takes down the evil empire. he has a very good & complete arc, so making him into this kind of grumpy reclusive guy who almost murdered kylo ren feels out of place. much like most other things in the disney trilogy, there is nothing "luke" about TLJ luke skywalker. you could make him any other jedi master type character and everything would be the same, there's nothing really accounting for luke's background or journey from the previous trilogy. personally if i was the TLJ writer i wouldnt have even included luke in the new movies (or any of the old farts from the OT), make him a distant memory of heroism --- |

| Romulox28 12/18/19 10:05:55 AM #10 | longpost inc: from a movie perspective it's awful. like half of it is pointless filler (i.e. the whole casino planet part). there are tons of weird little inconsistencies and plot points. character development is all over the place. there are some lines of dialogue that feel like they were written by Tommy Wiseau (the throne room scene with Snoke immediately comes to mind, how the movie starts with a Yo Mamma joke, etc). There are tons of other details (how Luke was handled as a character, how there is no real established villain or conflict, etc), and altogether these add up to a pretty crappy movie. from a star wars fan perspective, it's even worse. i have long had the belief that star wars fans dont necessarily like the movies as much as they like the potential of the franchise. They like to hear about a planet or see some cool looking character like Boba Fett and wonder about him. The new trilogy does nothing to spark this imagination. there's no real cool new locations, no cool new aliens, etc; there is no sense of a conflict or universe being any bigger than what is presented on the screen. for all the hate the prequel trilogy gets, the one thing it nails is that sense of scale. you've got politics, a bunch of prominent alien races, expansion on the sith/jedi lore, tons of new planets with their own history & culture, etc. the new movies have none of this, they're just generic blockbuster films with star wars assets plopped in there. if you took out the X Wings and lightsabers and replaced them with something else TLJ could be any other movie, there is nothing "star wars" in those movies besides superficial, surface-level shit. --- |
