I feel that judging the quality of a year's worth of games based on awards or review scores is a pretty inefficient means about it. Like the games you like, without letting PR guys do the talking for you.

In any case, 2014 was the weakest by far due to lackluster indies, Wii U's sputtering lineup, and the awkward first full year of Xbone and PS4. Other than [Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS], I can't think of much else that made a splash in 2014. Bayo 2? Alien: Isolation, apparently? Eh.

One thing I loved about the mobile release of Year Walk was that the companion journal was released as a separate app. So you'd have two windows open--one for the journal and one for the game itself--occasionally thumbing between them to read about whatever-the-hell nightmarish thing just showed up in the game.

Holy wow, tough day and there's a lot to digest. Let's start from the top.

Piercing the Sky is kind of perfect. And I don't mean that it's perfect like "best VGM song ever" or whatever. I mean that it accomplishes everything it sets out to do, and no part that you could add or subtract would reasonably improve it. I feel this way about most of VVVVVV, but Piercing is really the -one- where all the elements come together and take you off on this soaring, evocative adventure with dramatic highs and lows. It wants you to dance, to move, but it also wants you to reflect. To push past the limits of what you're capable of, or what you think you're capable of, and pierce the fucking sky.

I haven't been around here long enough to really understand the weight of this, but even without a first-hand account I can tell that Umineko music is held up as a sort of gold standard. It's the bar, and very, very few things are going to be able to best it. That all out and said, I don't get it. I've listened through worldenddominator something like four times in a row today, each time more critically; poring over details I may not have noticed before. And I still feel so empty.

Maybe I just needed to be there, you know? A couple years give or take of a song like this growing on you to the point of being a fond memory. But for now, it has precious little to offer me. Even the bits that I did like (the harpsichord solo and glitchy distortions in the back half) couldn't make much of a difference since the whole is so bland and played-out. Maybe I'll feel differently with time.

Moving on, Murasaki's been tearing up the snubs bracket, eh? And we might not be done just yet, because damn if Lake of Tears doesn't have the right moves. In some places, it reminds me of another game in the bracket: Ripple Dot Zero. Swap FM for contemporary synth production and it might make a lesser Part Two track for a Crater Lake-type area. Also wanted to note that the sweep pads, heavily associated with hard EDM of the day, are put to great use during lulls just before the repeating chorus. On the whole, it's a shiny little funk/jazz fusion arrangement that's just sticky enough to keep you coming on back for play after play.

DORNWALD made some admirable headway in the last VGMC, and it's not difficult to see why. Track's got a lot of B8 appeal for sure, and the great moments are like stupid great. But the parts alone don't make a whole and, while I can't remember if this was the version used in VGMC or not, I definitely enjoy the in-game cut more since it's got just the right amount of all the good stuff. Stings to vote against this today, but I consistently and confidently prefer Lake of Tears that bit more.

Aurora's a bit anticlimactic, which is unfortunate since it's hurting for support as a result. Though I'd have probably voted in favor of DEMON TRansformation over the remaining RtDL set anyways, so maybe it's just met its match.

More solid high adventure sounds from SPMD versus seizure drlrldllrldlrdlrldld EDM. It also calls to mind nu-BEMANI and I probably went on a spiel about that at some point so, uh, really not my thing.

Something I thought was worth noting: I actually prefer Pushing Onwards over PF by a decent margin, and had it in the set instead until a handful of people asked for the change. Dunno, guess I just prefer the jaunty adventurey feel of Pushing versus the climax of Positive.

Huh, this is probably one of the BR tracks that forged a very lukewarm impression in my mind. The parts of this that I love don't stack well against the wubby EDM stuff that takes up the bulk of the seven minute runtime. That stuff don't fly with me at all.

Aw man. HK's set is extremely strong, I feel, but the DLC tracks just don't carry the emotional resonance of the base game. Grimm especially feels out of place against the sublime melancholy of Hallownest; it's like Pennywise showing up in the middle of Grave of the Fireflies. It's fine music, but I feel nothing for it.

I haven't enjoyed the SINOBUZ set up to this point, so good on Quakes for surprising me today. I don't like this new era of BEMANI at all--it seems to just slosh around without deviating from a handful of sounds and ideas, so I appreciate hearing something that breaks the mold.

Word of advice for anyone who cares about this stuff: cold wash, never tumble dry. The heat will fry the fabric, gradually destroying it by thinning the fibers until they're made too weak to bind. If you ever wonder why the fit starts to loosen or the material isn't as comfortable as it used to be, that may be why. Applies to all clothes, really; if you want it to last, hang it out to air dry for slow, but worthwhile results.

Anyways I'll be first to confess that I have way too much of the stuff haha. I'm in a not-so-ideal environment where I'm not able to express myself outwardly, so as a means of retaining my confidence I wear lots of vibrant, colorful stuff underneath. Without too many words, it's some peace of mind in a kinda fucked up situation.

I voted for Lullaby in the poll. The song was inspired by stories that Rob's fun uncle told about a 'spider man' who would come into childrens' bedrooms and eat them if they stayed up past their bedtime. It's the sort of wild fantasy horror that turns kids into latent insomniacs, conveyed beautifully, solemnly by the music. Few things are scarier than imagination.

Runner-up would absolutely be Plainsong, which still stands out in my mind as one of the most chilling intro tracks I've heard. Disintegration on the whole just kicks so much ass.

S-11 has pretty quickly become one of my favorite uses for the GB chip, which is weirdly harsh and not in a way keeps me coming back. So I'm not even really sure how Glacial Park and all the rest are able to get away with also being that and yet so much their own thing at once.

Aurora Memoria is in my top ten favorite video game soundtracks i feel like i have said this before. So cool to see this soundtrack connecting with an audience like this.

Yeah wow, EO4 comes swinging out of nowhere with a weirdo elevator muzak pick that actually really appeals to me. IIDX is a swing-and-a-miss though. Just the kind of trance sound that fails to resonate.
