Frozen is the one movie in this entire lot that feels the most like a product, designed to sell as much extraneous bullshit as possible. They even get a free pass to push out TV specials at Christmastime! At least it seems to be over(?), following the release of one of the most mid sequels to ever mid. I'm totally over Let It Go as a song but its scene does have impressive animation, which I think carries the appeal on top of being an aggressive earworm.

Tangled is at its best when it embraces its screwball comedy side, but I can't help but notice the animation isn't quite there yet. If this were a Renaissance or even post-Renaissance 2D film, I'm sure Mother Knows Best would have received an amazing treatment. As is, it's a rather earnest homage to the Golden era works, using its own shell to drive some biting satire via one of the most realistic villains in the Disney rogues gallery.

I love the reprisal, calling back to Jafar's reprisal of Prince Ali with the roles reversed. Gothel is one mythic bitch.

Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, though. That is a different beast entirely and lives up to the excellent groundwork from the film and more. I haven't watched very many 'new' cartoons--Tangled is an exception and absolutely worth the investment. Glad to see it repped so favorably here.

Great spread today. Low score for Under the Sea is really a matter of preference. It's well written and produced, just like every Ashman/Menken number, but way too sunny to the point of being annoying. Never seen Little Mermaid but I always hated this track, even when I was younger.

Just saw it and it was fine. Like every Illumination movie, conveyor belt, cookie-cutter story and no real substance to speak of. Won't offend anyone. Won't inspire anyone. Just a perfectly, utterly fine way to kill 90 minutes.

The soundtrack was excellent though, like WOW. Soyo Oka's Super Mario Kart themes really caught me off-guard. Brian Tyler making me pine for the alternate universe where he scored the Sonic movies too, and not that cardboard hack Junkie XL. There is something to say for hearing VGM proper on the big screen.

Saturn's 3D control pad is a ridiculous thing with its circular design, but it is still the way to experience Panzer Dragoon and NiGHTS. As a general rule, the jankier the controller, the more I love it.
