...I should've listened to Snake. Embarrassing, directionless, convoluted. The 'twist' was something I naturally inferred while watching and thought could at least be fun to speculate about, but nah apparently that's what the entire thing was building up to. Wasted potential is a huge peeve of mine, and this was 40-odd minutes of exclusively that.

Another quick update before the thread implodes. Two more soundtracks-- Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Dash-- are being replaced to make room for Sonic Superstars and Sonic Dream Team. The big reason is that neither of the former have more than two original tracks to their name, and three is the soft minimum for eligibility. Should've looked into that before listing them for the project, just figured Sonic Dash especially would have more than two original tracks to its name after being live for an entire decade.

Heaven help me, I just reached Sonic Frontiers. For those unaware, this game contains over 200 tracks of new music, and most of them are LONG. This is also a good time to mention that I haven't played past Kronos Island (the first world), and am considering that I may have to marathon the rest of the game to give context for what I'm about to listen to. I'm nothing if not thorough...to often irrational extremes. Will keep you all posted as I work my way to the top.

Cookie Clicker at least has a personality all its own-- world-ending crises brought upon by mundane thing is hardly an original slant but the game takes it to such comical extremes. Every time you think it can't push farther, it proves you wrong and robs you blind. Plus the dev's a good sport, and while every other idle game in its footsteps is beefed with microtransactions, Cookie Clicker is indefinitely free!

That said I would never recommend the game to anyone haha. My browser's cookies refreshed at some point this year and with 'em went my cheatless save that I just never backed up. A weight was lifted that day.

Hey everyone, happy Superstars release day! Hope you're all enjoying the game. I'm breaking the months of silence to formally announce that the Sonic 111 project is not dead, and I've been chipping away at it almost daily-- but why the wait, then? I can point to three factors:
1) A slew of real-world hardships that I'd be wasting my breath to elaborate on
2) The scope of the project has expanded significantly since its announcement in May
3) Actually that's it really so I guess just two factors

The second point is what really matters, of course. When I started the project, I didn't anticipate that there would be so much music to rank that I'd need to take out close to half a year just to get through it all. Just how much music are we talking, though? Well, as of posting this...

...I've ranked just under 3200 songs. That is a shitload of songs, with more still to come. On top of that, I've gone to considerable (see: needless) lengths to make this experience immersive and even educational, including image and video elements created specifically for the project. I hope you like oscilloscope breakdowns.

There will be a few more major updates before we reach the finish line, but for now, here's a small preview for an interactive companion piece to the main ranking. I should be able to unveil this in the weeks to come(!):

Lost Your Marbles can lock you out of an ending?? The game does seem to prioritize its 0_o~quirky~0_o humor over fun, fluid gameplay. It's a shame because I do love Taito's Cameltry and have been hoping to see a game like it on Playdate.

Cats is, to me, the absolute lowest that a musical can possibly go. If you told a person who hates Broadway to make up a Broadway song on the fly, whatever they come up with wouldn't be much different from this:

I say this, though I think that's why I love it! It's total nonsense the entire way through that has little to do with the source material-- itself a collection of irreverent short poetry written to entertain the author's godkids-- and yet carries a sort of brazenness about itself that's hard to come by. You're dressing up a bunch of talented performers in cat costumes as they sing about milk and scratching posts and purring and also magicians for some reason. It's the most make-it-up-as-you-go thing to ever make it to the stage, and in this it may actually be the most perfect stage adaptation of all.

Also, the actual production side of things is sharp as ever. I especially love the Overture, translated faithfully for the 2019 film:

Great point. Then, I guess it's less that song + animation is an issue and more that I would rather participate in an anime music contest outright.

The pool doesn't contain a lot of curveballs and seems to be mostly populated by what users were already familiar with, which is always boring as hell. One way to mitigate this would have been to require users to post the animethemes link for each of their noms, so that we aren't just posting lists of stuff people have never heard of and don't have the time to manually seek out. Also think the nom window was way too brief, and maintain that asserting we vote on the merits of song and animation was a detriment overall (hate to be so stubborn about this, but it seriously irks me even now). Real Folk Blues is my favorite song in the bracket but its fate is pretty much sealed next round because [[it's just a slideshow]].
