Tough first match. PfA is solidly decent throughout its duration. Sayonara has higher highs and lower lows, but the lows just drag out for too long.

Snubs finals are hype, especially considering this is my first time listening to either of these songs! Echidna has a bunch of cool elements all mixed together into a fun energetic experience. Hazy Moon is prime midnight cruising music. Even closer match here, but I love the smooth jazz groove in Hazy Moon.

i actually have no idea how to vote in snubs finals lmfao. these are both easily top 100 songs for me and extremely close. ECHIDNA is the kind of pure energy fun and the perfect blend of crazy crispy amazing EDM elements that I could listen to for hours. Hazy Moon manages to somehow be the absolute pinnacle of "chill-out" while still being uptempo, every single instrument is absolutely on point and flows like a lazy river all to yourself and just. what the fuck. why am i having such a hard time voting for my literally only nom in the entire snubs bracket. and the song i put at #1 too. what the fuck.

Match 1 is actually...extremely close? The best parts of Sayonara are better than Potential. Way better, even. Halves vs. wholes doesn't even apply here because it's those soaring moments that are worth waiting around for. I'm very cautiously abstaining for now, but there's still more than enough time left for me to make up my mind.

MATCH 1

Wow, rough match. Favorite VVVVVV song vs. favorite All Phase Mix. They're both really good songs, but I'm feeling Sayonara slightly more right now.

MATCH 2

Echidna feels like it puts a lot of different things that individually all make me think "hey, this is pretty nice!" And of course, my fondness of the piano shows up once again here when I say that the parts where the piano was present are probably my favorites in this song. But that brief part with the guitar was pretty cool too.

Hazy Moon is decent, but feels like it falls a bit flat compared to the other Tokyo Xanadu songs that have showed up previously. I guess this feels more like Gurumin if anything, which to me is a bit lackluster out of the Falcom games' music, so perhaps that explains a bit why this song feels not as good as the other songs from this game. I will say that the brief piano parts are very nice. Yay for more piano love. Anyway, I'd probably vote those other songs over Echidna but not this one, unfortunately.

After some thought, this was the set's number one for a reason. Many reasons, really--still a mystery how all of these layers work so well. Souleye's only full-length contribution to VGM is also one of the very best.
