I played the demo, and I've yet to see the additions to the trial mechanics being "interesting", but I suppose that may change in the actual game. Being able to lie about stuff has the potential to be great, but if it's not executed well, then I could definitely foresee myself reeeeeally hating that mechanic.

I guess even when you fully upgrade your clubs, they diminish over time, so you have to keep buying tickets to keep your clubs repaired so you can keep hitting the ball 30% harder than everyone else online. I am ashamed to admit that I bought the level 7 Big Air clubs on World Invitational with real money, but this is such an egregious pay-to-win philosophy that I'm actually legitimately upset now.

For a while, I was actually glad that you could only use base clubs online, because it evens out the playing field. I was really confused why my best scores were still 4 strokes behind everyone else, but I figured that was just a case of people grinding the same course for miracles. Now I realize that if I pay $40, I can have scores just like them. I literally have no more reason to play online anymore. Good job, Clap Hanz. Really proud of you.


By the way, here's basically the only way to possibly get a condor in this game.

I was playing those nine holes online, and noticed like 7 people destroying the ball way over to the right on this hole, and wondered what the hell was going on. I sat there and watched what was going on, and realized people were actually driving the green. My 1W power is maxed at Rank 6, so I had no idea why everyone else's ball was going 60 yards further than mine through the air, but I sure found my answer.

..... oh god. I decided to see what else people are saying about the state of things, and found this....

I just beat the game, and wow... sorry for the caps but I am BEYOND FUCKING PISSED.

When you beat the game and ascend to Rank 7, the game suddenly springs the entire pay-to-win structure at its core onto you suddenly. I can't even fucking believe it. It's like winning a prize at the fair and when you leave a clown jumps out from a bush and beats you with a hammer.

So you know those clubs you've been torturously levelling up, that won't even be halfway levelled by the time you beat the game? Yeah, fuck those clubs. You get a second set when you beat the game, and the way you level them up is with gems or tickets - both of which cost money. (You do not receive nearly enough gems from free roam to do this effectively at all, I think those max at 5 per day.)

One ticket or 10 gems gets you two levels. That's what I got for 10 gems. And one ticket costs 8 euros. Let's do some maths:

8 euros = 10 tickets = 20 levels
Current max levels of a normal set: 25 (distance) +15 (control) +15 (spin) +10 (back door) = 65
Therefore it'd cost 32 euro to get your custom set up to where you could be from levelling, but fortunately enough (for Clap Hanz) since your clubs are only half levelled by now it's damn tempting. You'll certainly be behind people who pay for a LONG time.

But wait, there's much more. You can level custom clubs ABOVE what you can normally level the standard set. The top distance is 300 yards for normal, but custom clubs can hit about 366. Working it out at about 4 yards per level (in distance), it looks like max custom level distance is about 40. So if they're adding 15 lvls to power, let's assume they're adding a similar amount to control and spin as well (10 lvls each), and let's be kind and say none for backdoor.
Then 40 (distance) +25 (control) +25 (spin) +10 (backdoor) = 100
That would require 50 tickets at 8 euros for 10 tickets.
8 euros *5 = 40 euros.

You know that guy who got the Condor? The world first? Yeah, he probably paid 40 dollars for a set of clubs to do that. Wow, what an achievement. You know those people setting -15 scores on nine hole courses? They probably paid a boatload for their clubs.

This is fucking horseshit in a 40 dollar game, and I swear to god if I could ask for a refund now I would. I cannot BELIEVE they hid this shit behind the end credits, behind that awful shitty grind they called a single player mode. The whole point of this golf is equal competition! Where your own skill determines your score!

So I was getting really frustrated by my shots zagging all over the god damn place and decided to see if anyone else was having the same problem. Sure enough, it just seems like they added more variance to shots across the board, but especially when you hit perfect impact. So even if you do everything perfectly, there's a chance your shot's not even going to come close to where you wanted it to go. What kind of design choice is this, to punish players who execute everything perfectly? This makes no fucking sense.

Case in point, hole 5: I use a power shot on my drive so I can get past the bottleneck part of the fairway and set up for a nice, easy 100 yard chip from the fairway for an easy birdie. I hit power and impact perfectly, and then because the developers don't like when people like their series so much that they master it, the shot veers WAY off to the left at 99%, and I end up in a flower bed. I have no idea whether I'm going to hit a flower or not, so I hit my next shot as if it won't. It does, of course, and it falls short and out of bounds. Alright fine, time to hit it at full power a club up. This one doesn't hit a flower and I sail over the green and into the water. Instead of a close-to-guaranteed birdie, this game decided I deserve a +4 for hitting a perfect power shot on my drive.

But I post this not just to bitch about the whole thing (granted, that's the main reason). Apparently, putting backspin on a swing adds another layer to the variance that your shot can have. I hit probably 80% of all my shots with backspin, including drives, so if you are in the habit of doing the same thing, I suggest trying to get out of that habit as soon as you can.

There may also be a thing where you need to hold your controller perfectly flat and still while in a swing, but that may be just a placebo type of deal. I've yet to test it, so I'll see if that appears to change anything.

I took that as a challenge, so I set up a full round to see what I'd get on a whim.

I had -19 after 15 holes and realized holes 16 and 18 were my final shots at eagles to make your -24 prediction come true, so I tried to skip a shot over the water onto the 16th green.

It bounced back off the rocks into the water.

And then set me in the rough, right behind a tree on my drop. So I bogey'd that and then got birdie/eagle to close out the round for a -21.

Better luck next time. =P

Initial reports are that Lyn is the only one truly game-breaking. Lucina is still super good, Roy is also super good, but only on a Horse Emblem team, and Ike is in a weird state of being right on the cusp of being really good, but not quite there. He really needs Distant Counter in order to actually counter Reinhardt, like it seems like he was built for, but that requires both sacrificing a Hector and dumping Steady Breath. Even then, his Res isn't all that high, so he's likely just going to be your designated Reinhardt killer and then go off and hide somewhere so he doesn't die.

These power nodes you have to find are the absolute worst. It'd be OK if they were more noticeable, but I swear they don't sparkle unless you're within a few feet of them, and even then, it's just so tiny. To ease the pain of those following behind me, here are where the first 4 are.

Rank 2: Fairly close to the online gates. Just a bit in front of them.
Rank 3: Behind the pond on the dirt path, over by the trees.
Rank 4: Right next to the stationary golf cart on the road.
Rank 5: Back on the dirt path, on the near side of the fishing pond.

I don't understand why rank 1 and 2 are like this. It takes about 2 hours to get through rank 1 and 3 hours to get through rank 2, if you just blow through everything as fast as you can.

It takes until you become rank 3 until you finally get to play the second course. Why?

I ranted a lot in Discord a little bit ago about some of the changes. I added punctuation so it isn't quite as unbearable to read.

I spent like 2 1/2 hours playing it last night and just now got past being stuck playing the same 9 holes over and over again.

Also, leveling up is really weird. You have 4 stats for every club, and they all level up differently, so if you by chance use your 5 iron way more than your 4 iron, you may end up being able to hit the ball further with the 5 iron, because it leveled up more.

In which case, when would you ever use your 4 iron anymore, so then you end up with a huge distance discrepancy between your 3 iron and 5 iron because you neglected your 4 iron, which is absolutely ridiculous when you think about it.

"I'm really good with my 3 iron and 5 iron, but I'm just garbage with my 4 iron"

and so like, a lot of the course's holes are longer than you can really tackle, because your starting driving distance is only 180 yards, so you use your 3W on pretty much every par 4 and sometimes twice on par 5's, and you're not gonna use your 5W when you can get 15 more yards, so there's gonna end up being like a 20-25 yard difference by the time my overall power gets high enough I don't have to rely on my 3W anymore.

Oh, another change is that putting now has an impact timing, which makes sense, I guess.

But it takes like 5 seconds for the cursor to come back around for a 2 foot putt, because you double tap X to just make a tiny putt, but then you have to wait for it to go up to full power and then come back.

This probably just affects me, but you get to pick where on the tee box you want to tee off from for every hole.

Except when a hole starts, I'm always holding up+triangle to get a better look at where i'm hitting, so now I'm just sitting there waiting to place the ball before I realize the camera isn't moving.

That's just something I have to get used to.

Yeah, there's a par 5 on the first course where you can drive it into another hole's fairway to get a better shot at the green in 2
but you have to maneuver a few tree trunks. Depending on the wind, you need to place the ball in different places to get through them, but you can't replace it, at least that I found.
I dunno, maybe there's a way, I didn't try any buttons.


tl;dr I'm really enjoying it so far.

Cast is indeed far superior but the biggest thing for me personally was that the mysteries were actually engaging in DR2. I had every DR1 case except the second to last completely figured out by the time the trial started, it was a big let down in that department. DR2 surprised me in every case, and even the ones where I knew who did it going in had some big surprises in the how.

Also, just to add to this, I also like DR2 a whole lot better because Hajime isn't an oblivious little shit like Makoto is. I actually really like Makoto as a character, but my god is he a super frustrating protagonist.
