Well, the problem is really the way the NFL works. Stafford is the highest paid QB because he's the most recently paid QB. Kirk friggin' Cousins will probably become the highest paid QB next year.

Considering the teams that are going to be offering Cousins that money (The Rams and the 49ers because of their coaches' connections with him), yes, it will be.

Are there sabermetrics in football? Do QBs have VORP values?

I just cannot believe that there is such little incoming QB potential from college over the next few years that you have to pay a mid-tier guy like Stafford when you're not close to a Championship in any way.

Well, supposedly the best draft prospect in college football this year plays at Wyoming.

Drafting QBs in particular is such an inexact science anyway. Look no further than the Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf 1-2 punch in 1998 as proof.

Or, you know, Tom Brady.

Or any number of top 5 draft picks who suck, like Blake Bortles.

Hey; be lucky you even have Stafford; The Vikings overshot for a guy who wouldn't be caught dead as a backup, then found a guy whose draft stock died because of fucking GLOVES...only to suffer horrific career threatening injuries, then spend 1st/4th on a guy who has never even once lived up to potential because of even MORE injuries. That's not even bringing up McNabb, Jackson, Webb, and um...every other non-Favre guy in the past 10 years.

Did they draft that guy who ran out of his own endzone to avoid a sack, causing a safety? That was the most LOLions moment I can remember.

The Vikings or the QBs they selected? Because if you say Christian Ponder is better than Matthew Stafford, I'll have to smack you.

To chime in on the stafford thing, I'm with leon in that it's not so much stafford is worth it in a vacuum, but that he's just the most recently paid in a league in which the cap keeps going up and up and up. Every top player at their position is going to be the highest paid the longer we do this.

Also, the lions do have a choice, but this was the right one imo. I think stafford is talented enough that they are better off hoping he can somehow catch fire from now on rather than take a gamble at the draft. I think last year was enough for me to say that stafford really is better off without calvin johnson, not because johnson was a bad player, but because of stafford's own tendency to focus on him. I'm seeing that his QBR last year was his personal best, and I'm willing to bet it's because he's now looking for the open receiver rather than trying to force it to Johnson. Also looking at the stats, he's played 16 games each of the last 6 seasons, so he's overcome the injury plague that got him early in his career. He's certainly not elite tier but I think he is the kind of guy you want to lock up long term just because he's demonstrated he can play the position. At this point that's all you can really ask for.

Dan Le Batard said that about the Stafford deal today on his radio show, and I think that sums it up pretty well.

Former Golden Gopher Mitch Leidner (McShay's FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK...lol) may play for the Vikings tonight. I'm all for playing former state alums, but Leidner was not a starting QB. He was buoyed by strong running backs and an awesome tight end. Now, this feels like a pity tryout.

Then again, the Gophers are playing a two-QB system this year. What's that saying? If you have two starting QBs, you have none?

Steelers pick up Joe Haden. Should be a good spot for him. Can play man to man (what they need to compete with NE), and will be their number 2 with Artie Burns being their main guy. William Gay being their slot CB where he is actually really good, just terrible on the ends. Haden isnt quite what he used to be though, the price tag being kinda high
