How do you react when someone teases you for your physical appearance?

For the sake of this poll, let's assume this is a person you don't know. Or barely know. Someone who is NOT a friend or a family member. This is someone who has no relationship with you whatsoever, so they have absolutely no ground to walk on, and no justification for the insult as "I was only kidding" etc. There's no reason this person should "just be kidding" with you. They don't know you. You don't know them.

This might be a person you see at a bar. Or a party. Maybe they are a friend of a friend. A total stranger to you. A waiter at a restaurant. A cashier at a gas station.

Upon interacting with you....before any formalities or "hellos" have taken place, they skip straight into insulting you. Pointing out a physical flaw you have. A quick little jab out of nowhere.

A comment about your weight. Your height. Your nose. Your hairline. Your skin. The car you drive. Your ears. The shoes you are wearing. The way you are holding your drink in your hand. Something. Anything.

I know this poll is kinda stupid, and I know it's extremely vague....as no specific insult is given. I also know that such things don't happen very often. 99% of people are nice and non-confrontational.

But over the course of my life....it has happened. Many times. And I've seen it happen to others...many times. And it's a fascinating phenomenon. And it's so weird when trying to process how to react while still maintaining your pride, your dignity, your sanity....and maybe not escalating the situation.

And then a lot of people try to say "You just gotta have thick skin!"

But I also think the people who say such things.....just havent been properly insulted yet. LOL

(mild spoilers about a particular supporting character)

It's weird how much the sister-in-law character bothered me. Like, I watched the movie almost week ago....and I'm still disturbed by what she represented. It just seemed so random. So out of place. So unnecessary.

What it says about how society views men and how many movies rely on the bashing of husbands/boyfriends for comedic value.

Her character was essentially just there to be a bitch. To constantly try to convince her sister to divorce her husband....with absolutely ZERO justification.

If he was an abusive, neglectful jerk.....and was always lying to her, etc....I could understand. But there was no evidence of that happening.

He was a genuinely nice guy! And he worked a second job wile she was going to school to support her. Because he loved her so much. He's a cop! He cares about his town. He loves his wife. What exactly isn't to like about the guy??? But his sister-in-law would always try to convince her sister to divorce him. She even spells it out, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." like it's some kind of empowering chant or something.

And this was before the lies on TV about him when he kinda had to go on the run.

WTF?

It just bothered me how she viewed him with such venom for no good reason. Didn't seem necessary at all.

Shonen just kinda annoys me after a while. I wish they'd make more anime series with mature characters.

Anime isn't just for middle school and high school kids anymore. A LOT of grown ass adults are getting into it these days. So why not make more series geared around that age range?

We need more Berserks. Castlevanias. Cowboy Bebops. Moribito Guardian of the Spirits. Ergo Proxys. Technolyzes. Ghost in the Shells.

They only seem to come around every 5 years or so.

The 3 movies on Netflix are fucking incredible. They kinda jampack the more extensive anime series from the 80's or 90's into all 3 movies.

It basically just goes up to the point where stuff all goes to crap, and Guts becomes a demon hunter. Then bam.....abrupt ending. Kinda painful.

There is an anime series that continues after these events, but the animation is so terrible, it's honestly not even worth watching. The animation is cheap 3D garbage. It's kinda offensive, to be honest.

The MANGA is where it's at. One if the best mangas of all time. And still on-going to this day (sadly, an issue only comes out like every 5 months or so....which is literal torture).

That's because I never tried to elaborate on it. I've never been good at describing stuff. So I don't try when it's not needed.

Well, if you want to have a justifiable position on something while calling others wrong....then yeah. It is kinda needed. Otherwise you are just being disagreeable for the sake of being disagreeable. With no justification or explanation of your own position.

So I'll just assume it's because you know in your heart that you offer your friends things and they offer you things, and that's what makes the friendship a friendship. You are just scared to death of acknowledging my point because pride is a helluva drug ;)

I, unlike you, don't require people to give me something to be friends with them, though. To me, that's not what friendship is about.

Then why are you friends with someone? What is friendship about, in your opinion? Because you haven't elaborated on that at all. You've just been criticizing my viewpoint this entire time, but never explaining your own.

If you don't think friendship is about mutual offerings....then what is it?

You see....I think what the problem is.....is that your friends do offer you something. And you offer them something as well. But you don't want to see it that way because it makes you feel.....dirty(?) I guess? Selfish? I'm not sure.

But I think you are interpreting what I am saying as a cold, sociopathic, and evil thing. When it's not. It's simply recognizing the finer details to a relationship.

Do you think a husband and wife would remain together if they weren't giving each other something in some way?

Does that mean their marriage is built upon a foundation of parasitic selfishness?

You could see it that way. But that's being pessimistic.

;)

Nah I remember weeaboos saying Aerith even back in the 90s.

Weird. I don't recall a single person saying "Aerith" until years after Kingdom Hearts released in 2002.

The internet was a MUCH smaller place in the 90's, and stuff like this didn't make the rounds unless you actively searched for it. And not many people searched for it, because they were too busy looking up porn, and [SPOILERS FOR A GAME THAT IS OVER TWO DECADES OLD AND ONE OF THE MOST TALKED ABOUT TITLES EVER MADE WITH MANY SPOILERS ABOUT THIS EXACT THING IN TOPIC HEADLINES THAT GAMEFAQS DOESN'T MODERATE]ways to revive Aeris[END SPOILERS, FOR THE TWO PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WHO HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT THIS MOMENT IN GAMING!]

Kingdom Hearts is what exposed people to the translation error. And that was almost 5 years after FF7 released. So that was 5 years for most gamers to get attached to "Aeris" since it was the default name given to her within the game itself. I mean, all the other names checked out, why would anyone be doubtful about Aeris? They accepted it. It was canon for all intents and purposes.

It is what it is.

Many people prefer Aeris. Even if it's "wrong". It's "right" in their hearts and minds.

Kinda like how some people prefer to pronounce Cait Sith. LOL

My friends are actual, real friends.

So are mine. The only difference between us is that I'm honest and perceptive enough to acknowledge the fact that we are all friends because we are offering something to one another.

Whether that be the basic joys of "company" and "camaraderie", or just the joys of having someone to share an experience with. Whether a movie, a video game, a joke, a conversation. Something is there. Something that gives the friendship meaning and value. We are giving something to one another.

If they offered you nothing.....how exactly are they your friend?

Like I said before: you are simply caught up in the semantics of it.

You disagree with my "tone" or something, and you are putting me into some kind of negative bubble because that's easier for your mind to comprehend. And probably because you just like to be disagreeable. LOL

How about friendship

You can't just offer someone friendship. Friendship entails things. Actions.

Hanging out with them, for starters. That is offering them company. A sense of belonging. That is you offering them something. That is substance. That is what they are getting out of their friendship with you.

LinkPizza posted...
But it also sounds like you don't have actual friends.

You are assuming I have no friends simply because I can acknowledge out loud that people need to have something to offer you in order to be friends with them?

But it's true.

Everything I have said is true. Apparently you just don't like the sound of it.

Terrible outlook and wrong while being sociopathic.

Common interests.

Common interests help validate each other. That is having something to offer them.

Nothing sociopathic about it.

Nobody would be friends with someone if they didn't offer them something to some extent.

It's acknowledging that fact that sometimes leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. But it's ultimately true.

Even if you can't immediately see it, you are offering something to each other. Even if it's basic company and sense of belonging. Friends have something to offer.

If you want friends: make yourself marketable in some way. Have something to offer.

Aerith sounds like the lispy equivalent of Aeris. Which bothers me. A lot. And makes me naturally prefer Aeris.

Plus, I played it back in 1997 and the game itself had her listed as "Aeris" so that's what I got attached to. (And can you blame me?)

I didn't get internet until 1999, and it was slow. Werent a lot of good gaming websites that talked about stuff.

Wasn't until Kingdom Hearts that people saw her called Aerith....and people wondered why. Then we learned about the translation error. But the damage was already done by then.

Millions of gamers had experienced her as "Aeris" in their hearts and minds. Got attached to her. Made those memories. I can agree with that. Being in my mid 30's, I'd imagine my hormones are dwindling so there is less of a drive as well compared to how I was in my 20's.

The really weird thing I find with my situation is if someone actually ask if I wanna get under the sheets, and said person is likable, I honestly would not know how to respond. Knowing me, I'd refuse since the life I have now is the "norm" for me. Anyway, four more years till the 40-Year-Old Virgin film is more of a documentary than fiction.

As long as you're happy, and not being dishonest with yourself.

There is a subtle grace to being single. Not a lot of people like to talk about it, though. It goes against nature. It's a violation of all our social constructs.

But I'm always at peace during those periods when I don't have a romantic interest. Only accountable to myself. No one to distract me. To judge or be judged by. To disappoint. To hog the sheets. To worry about.

It's nice to just be me, and not feel like I have to hold back from doing the things I want to do because it might conflict with someone else's desires.

But I also love sex and intimacy and making someone laugh. And giving pleasure just as much as getting it.

Humans are so awkward and complex. It drives me crazy sometimes.

As a 36 years old virgin who have never dated anyone, honestly this does not bother me at all and I do not know why it does not as it would for others. Perhaps there is no disappointment from failing because I never truly tried. Perhaps it is because I have other single family and friends, who are probably also virgins, that I do not feel alone.

It could also be because there is no actual pressure from my family to find someone. My cousins and mother have occasionally asked if I will ever marry and I always tell em I will probably die single and surrounded by cats. They leave it at that or when they do ask it is just in a joking manner.

Regardless of what society might think about "wizards" like me, I simply have too many other concerns in life (i.e. maintaining my health, dealing with my finances, expanding my career, etc.) to be concern with losing my virginity.

You sound like you are voluntarily celibate. I bet you have an interesting story to tell.

Very true. However.....due to the advent of social media, the rise in STDs, and people being trained to actually communicate more and be decent human beings.....that trend is starting to change.

Don't get me wrong, there are still TONS of animal asshole men out there slaying as much vagina as physically possible.....but they are becoming a minority. And are usually hated by their peers.

A lot of guys have turned into idiosyncratic dorks who love games, movies, books, and music. They aren't slaying vagina. They are slaying demons in Dark Souls, and maybe trying to date when they can find a girl who is willing to tolerate them.

Not making history, because they weren't passing on their genes like all the "winners". Social media didn't exist then....so they didn't have much of a voice, or have legions of people to bully them, brand them, encapsulate them into some kind of title.

Just a thought.

Would any "nice guy" even label himself as "involuntary celibate"? I feel like there is a fine line between being unrealistic with losing ones virginity and being in a situation where losing it simply is not feasible. How many "incels" fall under the former instead of the latter?

Does ANY guy legitimately enjoy admitting to their friends that they aren't getting laid? Or (God forbid) admitting that they are having trouble managing the modern dating scene?

You are literally seen as a "loser" by even your own family members if you are a guy that isn't getting laid.

It's a very sexist social stigma that has existed for thousands of years.

Why aren't we addressing that?

Why are we taking almost sadistic pleasure in branding guys incels and then compartmentalizing their entire persona?

Seems like people are just trying to justify their hatred of men who lack "game".

Kinda fucked up.

If a guy is just struggling to find a decent girl to sleep with, and won't settle for empty, loveless booty calls....then of course he can still be a perfectly nice guy.

In fact, a lot of guys struggling to get laid ARE nice guys.

They aren't willing to settle for some temporary lust relationship.

They want a real relationship. Monogamy. A wife. Love.

And they won't settle for anything less, so it sadly makes them very lonely for prolonged periods of time.

By definition, they would be incels. Because they WANT a relationship, but struggle to find a decent one.

Some guys are severely limited in their options based on their geographical locations, and the availability of single women in their area.

Some guys just aren't attractive enough for many superficial women.

The fact that this even needs to be a question is kinda sad, and only highlights the problems that men face when being judged by the opposite sex.

"Oh, he's not getting laid, so that MUST mean he's racist/sexist/has a terrible personality, etc etc."

Wrong.

spoken like a true incel

hurr hrrr urrur dur dur hur!!! (beat ya to it, LMAO)

This.

You can easily find posts where lefties on this board directly insult people who aren't Marxists nutcases and zero moderations will take place.

But if you DARE to allude to something like : "The Dem party's candidates are a bunch of virtue signalers." Will get you moderated for, and wait for it, "insulting democratic voters."

The hypocrisy of the mod team is really impressive. Just admit that you're biased and we can just say we were right once again, and move on.

Exactly!

It's so obvious, I don't understand how the moderators even get away with calling themselves "moderators". They aren't moderating anything. They are promoting one political agenda, and silencing another. They're more like activists than moderators.

There are easily 20-some topics within the past week on the Politics board where people openly bash Conservatives, Republicans, and Trump-supporters in general. In the topic headlines. Clearly troll topics. Clearly inciteful and baity bullshit. Just trying to upset people and start arguments.

None of them got moderated.

Do the same thing to the Democratic party, Liberals, Hillary Clinton, Obama, Biden, etc.....and you will quickly get moderated for trolling.

The bias is real.

Different blood types can bring about complications later on (ex. Mother with a negative blood type carrying a child with a positive blood type can potentially cause issues if certain things occur) but as far as the initial conception goes I dont think it changes anything.

Hmmm, now THAT'S kinda interesting.
