Great Plateau comes with one problem for me, the trek to Mount Hylia. For every else there's no wrong answer to how you might try to get to an area, but Mount Hylia only has one way to fight the cold. Cooking. And you have to wander around the mountain to even find a pot after you see spicy peppers in the log cabin. Plus it doesn't even have all the tutorials. You still have to find the battle tutorial after you leave the mountain.

Can you light a torch and use that for warmth? I can't remember.

You can get the coat from the old man though, although I know, I know, technically that requires cooking also.

One thing I admit I personally don't understand is, why would a time loop make someone want to rush?? I don't see the logic behind that, although I'm sure there is some...

I could see it making you want to rush when you're already in the middle of reading something really interesting and you know the time loop is about to end, but besides that...

I think he just wasn't in the mood to put any effort into playing it.

It's a game that doesn't tell you where to go, which means you have to have curiosity in order to press onward. And if you get unlucky and don't find something interesting quickly, then yeah, you'll bounce off, unless you've got energy to try one more time.

I think it's rather similar to how Vinny didn't care for Mario Maker 1 at all, that game also requires effort to enjoy it. If you're not in the mood to do the effort of creating levels, and you're not in the mood to work through the random levels it serves you to find gems, you're not going to enjoy that one either. If he was luckier, he might have found some great stuff off the bat, but he probably didn't!

My favorite serieseses:

  • All of Vinnyvania (the cv3 and rondo of blood runs were most fun, but they all are good) (maybe you have to like castlevania though)
  • certain seasons of Breaking Brad (especially the Doom 2 run, everyone heckles him)
  • Contradiction: Spot the Liar (quick look, the supplemental quick look, then the premium videos)
  • This is the run (contra 1, and IMO altered beasts were most fun, but they are all good)
  • metal gear scanlon (I mostly just like metal gear solid (mostly msg2) and enjoy dan's enthusiasm for it)
  • the resident evil 2 playdates
  • 13 Deadly Sims
  • steal my sunshine
  • eh pretty much any giant bomb east playdate especially if they're doing random party games like jackbox or warioware
  • any nancy drew playdates

These are all pretty timeless and some of these I even actually rewatch from time to time, I've probably watched through vinnyvania like 4 times.

A lot of other gb videos make more sense to watch imo with others in giantbomb.com/infinite, which you don't need premium for. Demo derbys, unprofessional fridays, mario party party, the garfield playthroughs, old games shows, game tapes... I super enjoy "having those on" and having the chat window open to enjoy them with others, but they're not quite fun enough to sit down and stare at for the full video length. (ok, I have watched all the mario parties, but I don't think most people would be crazy enough to enjoy that.)

I still find the OT to be basic and more just relics of their time. Very cheesy and overhyped. Again, blasphemous opinions, but I rewatched the OT before TFA and did not get what made them so good. They were fine, simple, but not much more. Kinda like I had to be there at the time, or have been raised on them, to truly fall in love.

I wouldn't consider myself a star wars fan really, but c'mon, you have to at least like A New Hope. There are some moments in A New Hope that are like, pure movie magic:

* Obi-Wan's "Use the force, Luke" echoes in Luke's head, and then Luke shuts off his targeting computer
* Han shows up to the final battle right when all seems lost, and he saves Luke from Vader's tie fighter
* Obi-Wan intentionally losing the duel with Vader, to ensure Luke will come back stronger than ever

Luke shutting off that targeting computer has gotta be one of the best moments ever in a movie.

3C was the hardest thing in the game for me if I remember correctly, haven't played chapter 9 though.

I also thought there was something not that fun about the C sides, the B sides I was super into them, but the C sides felt just ridiculous...

One of my friends at work has been working on the golden strawberries and posts updates on facebook, looks like he has gold strawberries done for all the C sides, and chapters 1 through 7 A sides, and gold chapters 1 & 2 B sides, Pretty dang impressive!

Empire Strikes Back also always shocks me, that people worship it so hard. That one just feels like random meaningless events, never understood what's so great. I still like it a lot though.

It's fairly easy to warp around the game, so don't be too crazy about missing stuff. I suspect it is nearly impossible to find everything your first time through, but they help you a lot afterward by giving you organized hints about where to warp to, to start finding stuff you're missing.

TopicIs Super Castlevania IV a remake of Castlevania 1?
Epyo

My definition of "remake" is strict:

It's a retelling of the same story. A specific moment, within that game universe's history, is being retold.

By that definition, yes, it's a remake. It's literally the same moment in history (1700 something right?) in the castlevania game universe.

(Disclaimer: it also can't be a "port" at all. If it's a port, that disqualifies it from being a remake. It needs entirely new art assets, there can't be some copied over or up-ressed.)

-----

There are also situations where you can call a game "basically a remake". But I think you need the word "basically" in there.

"Basically a remake" means a shocking number of similarities in gameplay, setting, characters, levels, world design, etc.

But these are always very much a matter of opinion, and very arguable either way.

I would say Link Between Worlds is "basically a remake" of Link to the Past. But the plot is so different that I wouldn't say it "is a remake" straight up. I mean, look at that new merge-with-walls mechanic. That ain't no remake.

But it's "basically a remake".

Sonic 2 I could see the argument that it's "basically a remake" of Sonic 1, but it's not great.

Super Mario 3 I could totally see the argument that it's "basically a remake" of Super Mario 1.

For the ones I've played a lot of:

Rondo of Blood > Symphony of the Night > Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon > Curse of Darkness > III > Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night > Order of Ecclesia > Portrait of Ruin > Dawn of Sorrow > Aria of Sorrow > IV > Lament of Innocence > Chronicles (PSX) > Harmony of Dissonance > Circle of the Moon > CV1 > 64 > Adventure Rebirth > Judgment > Bloodlines > Dracula X (SNES) > II

The only problem with SotN in my opinion is, it's a bit of a weird imbalanced mess, gameplay-wise; however, I don't think the gameplay of metroidvania games is really that important. As long as it feels good to use the weapons, it's fine.

Instead, I think metroidvania games are all about beautiful visuals, atmosphere, music, all the artistic aspects. And, just having a really surprising world, with a lot of variety. I think SotN is one of the best games of all time in all of those categories. That soundtrack is super weird. What the heck genre is that Wandering Ghosts song.

For the ranking of the rest of the metroidvanias, I have RotN > OoE > PoR > Dawn > Aria, they're pretty much equal to me on the artistic aspect. I think this ordering is explained by how excited I am to find new things in them. In Aria, it's just crappy soul after crappy soul. It doesn't feel that fun. Meanwhile in PoR, you've got two characters you're equipping, with weapons, armor, and their separate magic techniques. That's awesome. And then in RotN, there's so many ways to customize your character it's just ridiculous.

-----

For soundtracks, I'd probably put:

III > Curse of Darkness > Symphony of the Night > Rondo of Blood > Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon > others

(interestingly, that's also my top 5 up above, but in a different order... perhaps soundtracks play the biggest part in if I like a game)

It is either or for me right now! Because I have two weapons to choose from in my bank:

* +15 intellect, +10 spirit
* +20 intellect, +3 spirit, +9 spell power

So if I switch to the second weapon, in a 2 minute hard fight I'm losing 4.8*7=33 mana from the spirit, but gaining 5*15=75 mana from the intellect, AND I get my +9 spell power.

Now, as far as 5-man dungeons go, I can't recall ever fighting anything for more than like 3 minutes. I could be wrong.

Raids, yeah I can certainly remember fights taking 10-20 minutes. In that case, I'm sure the spirit rockets ahead.

But as far as 5-mans go, it seems like favoring intellect is much better. And yet, when I read guides, people seem to recommend Spirit. Wha?? I guess they're just talking about raids. But they should probably say so.

On my priest, so far, I've been balancing Intellect versus Spirit. But today I decided look into the math behind it...and am surprised at the results.

Apparently, for a priest, 1 intellect = 15 mana. Simple enough. (Also, it increases crit slightly, I'll ignore this).

And, for a priest, 1 spirit increases your mana regen rate by 0.25 every 2 seconds, as long as you haven't casted a spell in the last 5 seconds. (You gain mana every 2 seconds).

So we'll say 1 spirit = 0.125 every second.

But, I've got the "Meditation" talent, which means I do keep 15% of my mana regen, if I've casted a spell in the last 5 seconds.

So, right after casting a spell, 1 spirit = 0.01875 every second.

...

So let's think about a 2-minute hard fight in a dungeon. I figure 20% of the time during the fight I'm getting full regen, and 80% of the time I'm getting meditation regen.

* 1 intellect = 15 extra mana for the fight.
* 1 spirit = 120 * (20% * 0.125 + 80% * 0.01875) = 4.8 extra mana for the fight.

So the 1 intellect is much better!

...

OK how about a 2-minute easy fight in a dungeon. I figure 60% of the time during the fight, I'm getting full regen, and 40% of the time during the fight, I'm getting meditation regen.

* 1 intellect = 15 extra mana for the fight.
* 1 spirit = 120 * (60% * 0.125 + 40% * 0.01875) = 9.9 extra mana for the fight.

1 intellect is still much better!

I didn't even take into account that, if my mana bar ever gets full during the fight, I don't regen any mana for a few seconds, so that makes spirit even worse.

And I didn't even take into account that, intellect gives bonus to healing crits!!

I made a spreadsheet. Even in a THREE MINUTE EASY FIGHT, 1 spirit only ends up giving me 14.9 extra mana for the fight. Still not enough.

I've slowly been trying to figure out music theory for most of my life, by myself, no formal training. I think I've got the basics and intermediate concepts at this point.

And, I could be wrong, but I've discovered that it's absurdly simpler than it looks.

The real problem is that, nobody's writing good explanations of the fundamental concepts. When occasionally people do try, they're way too brief, and use way too much jargon, so the explanations are useless, and even intimidating.

I've thought hard about why people aren't explaining the fundamentals well, and I'm not sure. My current guess is this: music theory is just rules that help you write good music, right? ...But there's not just one way to write good music, so you always feel like you have to pick a subtopic, for example, "how to write music that sounds like ____ genre". And then, when you're writing that subtopic, you feel like you're allowed to use jargon, and then you skip fundamentals!

And, so, nobody ever explains the fundamentals!!

I've been working on a short book or maybe just a blog post, called "music theory for the uninitiated". But I'm scared to continue to work on it, because I'm scared of saying things that are 90% right, but 10% wrong. And so, I as well, am failing to explain the fundamentals =/

Oh maybe this was obvious to bigger fans of the band, but I realized that 7empest is probably meant to be a sister song to "Flood" from Undertow. Listen to 0:00-1:30 of 7empest and then listen to 6:45-7:00 of Flood. Basically the main riff of both songs, and they're super similar, with a slight flourish added in 7empest to create a weirder time signature. And of course, tempests and floods are both storms.

Wouldn't be surprised if in concert they plan to sometimes play Flood and then lead straight into 7empest somehow.

Then it turns out she's been controlling all of humanity in fodlan for a thousand years, by violently murdering anyone who even thinks about standing up against the church, and you see some of that in part 1. And then there's all those crest experiments they seem to be doing on Lysithea, and Edelgard's family, and who else... crazy stuff.

And as for why it's ok to invade another nation unprovoked, it's a revolution, she wants to get rid of the unfair nobility/commoner divide, and stamp out all supporters of the corrupt church; replace the society with a new society, a meritocracy where science is held above faith. But really, from what I can tell, all the routes contradict each other completely, basically completely different games, so it's not that hard to be the "good guys" no matter which route you choose. Dang, boss had 2hp left on my Thief run.

This game is great!! Slay the Spire was a little too intense for me, I don't like thinking that hard. This game is filthy casual and I love it. I love the shortness of the runs.

Yeah they are really mean to Dan. Everyone has stuff they don't know, Dan's just willing to ask.

That being said, that RE4 stream was hilarious. I loved Vinny's rant about not googling during stream.
