I think the only thing with that is, maybe he's only good at making that techbase style of map, or, maybe Doom is just particularly good at that style of map. Whereas Abandoned Mines makes it clear, nope, he can make a sick threatening hellish map too. Plus, I know Romero gets a ton of the authorship credit for E1 maps, buuuut I think some other people started some of those maps right? And, since it seems like the E1 levels generally were worked on throughout the game's development, I always had a hunch they all worked together on those levels, to some unclear degree (like I imagine they all playtested them a lot, and pointed out and fixed all the bad parts, over the months of development...) The secret-within-a-secret that is required to access the window, that lets you jump to the 5-teleporter building, is such garbage. They did not playtest this game at all. I always go through the rest of the level first though, since it's such a good one. Warrens rules. Limbo, I've also long thought was the worst level in doom e1/e2/e3, but I was recently realized something kinda interesting about it--it's a big puzzle level, and yet, no matter how many times I've played it, I still don't have the solution memorized. I still have to stumble my way through it, after all these years. So, that's kinda cool. The idea of it is a neat concept, I'm glad they tried it. BUT my guess is, the owners of the shares, when they lend out the shares, they charge a fee upfront, that isn't based on the share value, just some constant fee. So, the owners of the shares do make money off of this--in fact, it's probably risk-free easy money for them, since they get their money immediately, and the borrowers are obligated to give the shares back in the end. Whereas, the people borrowing the shares, are only going to make money if the Short goes according to plan, so there's risk there. BUT they make more money than the original share owners, as long as it all goes right. Don't know if any of that is true, just my guess. Much like they did with this game! Maybe they'll change the ending though, I don't think anyone's that particularly enthusiastic about the original ending. It's fine, but not amazing or anything. CassandraCain posted... The fact that we can speculate on whether she will live or die is kinda the genius behind Remake. One of the oldest video game spoilers is now no longer a spoiler, we actually don't know that she will die now. It's an episode made by Nerve Software to be included in the XLBA release of Doom 2. I dunno why it's my favorite wad though...people generally like it, but nobody else really raves about it. In general, for some reason I slightly prefer official wads to custom wads, not sure why. Custom wads are great too of course. Most big Doom fans are the opposite, everybody loves custom wads and kinda sorta scoffs at the official wads (except perhaps plutonia). But man, usually I get like halfway through a custom wad and run out of energy. I think they might simply be too long, usually? The most famous ones are 30+ levels which is quite a commitment, and the mappers generally keep things simple at the start, but then get super excited and make big friggin maps in the second half, and the difficulty gets pretty ridiculous. I recently played through "neis.wad" (No End In Sight) a year ago or so, and it was great, but still, dear lord, that must have been like 10-20 hours... --- People who don't finish their sentences I'm a Castlevania superfan! | Epyo 01/28/21 6:43:44 PM #35 | Loooooooove FF7R, think it's my #14 all time, and FF7 is back at #21 or so. I think the only thing I prefer about OG FF7 is the music. Orchestral-style stuff just doesn't hit the same, I like punchy catchy stuff. But man, all the new stuff is just SOO good. Cloud and Barret went from meh to awesome, Tifa and Aeris went from cool to insanely-cool, I love Biggs/Wedge/Jessie so much, everything is super pretty, the combat is non-stop interesting throughout, the materia is fascinating, and all the new areas blew my mind (the shinra museum, the new honeybee inn, all of chapter 4, etc). Loved the ghosts, I think that stuff is ingenious. I'm into corny symbolism stuff though. --- People who don't finish their sentences I'm a Castlevania superfan! Ask me anything! |

As soon as you empty your ATB bar you should be switching to another character and emptying their bar. It feels like there's about 5-10 seconds before the enemies start targeting your new character after you switch so you can usually dump some skills and then switch to the next char. Hmm it's been 9 months since I played this, but this doesn't sound right. My memory says the ATB meter goes up really slowly if it's not your active character, right? I cannot solo regular Torghast wings past layer 5...but in TC, I have way more time to get my build set up... so I might be able to do it. I loved Torghast at first, but aspects are definitely annoying me, especially in Twisting Corridors:
That being said, I'm still generally enjoying it. It's not a fascinating roguelike, but it's an interesting slightly randomized puzzly-combat-challenge in the context of an MMO, and that's pretty cool. (Because I'm hilarious, I crafted the Torghast legendary +25% phantasma and have been using it for TC. It's pretty fun. It's possible they only didn't want to mention it, because people get annoying about it and try to recommend people. But even so, I would think they would still mention it once, accidentally. | Epyo 01/03/21 6:41:03 PM #19 | Well, I do enjoy the length of the videos, generally! I find Tim so fun to listen to, and the style of the videos, is just so cool. There must be so much work put in already to polish these up to their shine. But I think what kept happening in this particular video is, whenever he wanted to make a point that needed several pieces of supporting evidence: he then felt the need to remind the viewer of each piece of supporting evidence, in case they forgot some of it--because some of the evidence was last mentioned several hours ago, so it feels weird to connect back to it after it has been so long!! So he'd re-explain things again. So yeah, I dunno what the solution is, but the repetition was definitely noticeable, I thought. One solution might be to visually organize the evidence into bullet points or something, so rather than re-explaining stuff, the bullets just re-appear on screen. Or something. Or maybe that's already happening, I don't remmber. Or maybe he just enjoys making really long reviews, but to make sure the important stories and observations aren't lost among the length, they _have_ to be repeated, to be remembered. --- People who don't finish their sentences I'm a Castlevania superfan! I'm almost interested in playing the game (if it had a translation), but it sounds like he didn't really love the game until he invested many playthroughs, and I definitely don't have enough interest for that (even if it had a translation). I will say that it is his most repetitive review by far (and that's saying something!). I bet on average, each sentence in the review re-appears verbatim about 3 times. Several sentences are repeated like 7 times. The library of congress joke is in there, like, six times, right? The "point" and "bottom line" sections took hours to dance around a pretty simple "point" and "bottom line", almost being a satire of the names "point" and "bottom line". The use of the doom shotgun sound effect, did not get old, however. The "let's play" parts were very good and worth watching. | Epyo 12/31/20 1:27:00 AM #37 | I kinda despise team-based tabletop games: Part of the fun of a tabletop game for me is, doing whatever I want, when I want, basically. I'm trying to win, sure, but I can try new strategies every time, no big deal. But with a teammate, there's too much pressure to try to work together, or follow strategies that they would want to follow. Feels like there are way fewer options, and I'm unable to express myself creatively. ~~~ As for trick-taking games, I do like "Oh Hell" though. It's pretty basic, the cool twist is, you predict how many tricks you're going to win, and you get a big bonus if you end up being right. The predicting happens each round, after the deal, before you start playing the round. | Epyo 12/27/20 1:57:08 PM #107 | FF7R is one of my all time favorites, probably near the top 10, and I can't wait to re-play it. Just giving it some time so I can forget it a bit more. Everything is generally great--story, music, combat, they all stay interesting throughout, I thought. There's a few ugly parts visually, but also some super cool looking parts. I cannot believe what a good job they did on the characters--especially Barret, I thought he was super lame in the original, but here I'm fist-pumping at every line of his dialogue. And Aeris and Tifa have to be some of the most likable characters I've ever seen in a game, it's almost scary. And there are a LOT of wild surprises. | Epyo 12/23/20 1:33:30 AM #5 | The Mary/Mike/Dan stream is super great so far, it's pretty much the old GB style with the google doc and lots of weird categories--but doing it with just 3 people, super casually, with a lot of silliness, really makes the format soar. Yeah I wish this was audio 'cause I gotta go to bed. Makes me wish GB moved toward splitting up GOTY between the coasts, instead of them giving up on the format (basically what happened). Surprisingly, after 10 years, looks like I've finally stopped listening to the Bombcast, I've missed like 5 in a row. I love and adore Jeff, but don't particuarly enjoy him aggressively shouting about problems with the latest AAA game for 2 hours. I mean, I don't give a crap about these games either. Just, please find something else to fill the 2 hours! The email segment is like 10 minutes these days.
