I freaking looooove Catan and have played it over a thousand times with a particular few friends from high school.

Unfortunately, in the past few years I've learned that the game does not work at all unless everyone has the right attitude, and barely anybody has that attitude. You have to be the type of board gamer who will trade resources without knowing for _sure_ that it is advantageous, and someone who enjoys the atmosphere of board gaming so much that you can go 10 turns in a row and take no actions, and still have fun.

However I do not think it's the game's fault. I suspect that trading games only work if players are willing to trade for the sake of it, without knowing for _sure_ that it's a good idea. This is probably why there are almost 0 trading board games.

There are decent expansions for Catan that make the game fairer and more balanced, but they also make trading less important (since you know the game will help you build soon)...this makes the game passable for general players (although too complicated), but it no longer shines for the people it was meant for =/

So, I don't blame anybody for not liking Catan, it is not for everyone. But I wouldn't change anything about it. (Well, except, make the board a little bigger, or always include Seafarers)

Ooh I missed this thread so far. I'm up to 140ish games now, I should do one of these again some time.

Games I disagree on:

* I think Sushi Go Party is one of the best games ever. Perfect distillation of drafting, no obfuscation with unnecessary complexity, very satisfying variety in the set-collecting and the different ways to set up the game, and it scales well (except for 2p). Sushi Go original is much worse, so I guess I'm not actually disagreeing after all =]

* TTR is awesome because simple board games on big maps are awesome, duh. As a game, eh, it doesn't work that well. I actually wish it was more obvious how random it is, so players would take it less seriously--the game works best when you take <2 seconds per turn. So I guess I'm not actually disagreeing here either =]

Games I agree on:

* Yeah the social deduction bluffy games where you have barely anything to reason about, suck. I really hope I never have to play Sheriff of Nottingham ever again. Sounds like Seabass likes Resistance/Avalon more...eh I'll give that one credit, it's slightly better, I still don't like it though.

So I'm streaming original DBZ and finding it very hard to keep up with All Systems Goku. I believe I'm past episode 13 and still not caught up to their episode 6! Not complaining though because I'm also liking all the filler.

I watched DBZ 20 years ago but toonami did not show me the last 50 episodes, so I am excited to finally see those (eventually)

Portrait's a good choice for best Castlevania. Lots of unusual areas, pretty good music, not much to complain about. There are also parts of the game where it feels like you're choosing where to explore next, which is a feeling a lot of metroidvanias somehow don't always capture.

I think one of the most underrated things about it, is casting spells with Charlotte. What a weird thing to do in an action game, standing still and vulnerable for a couple of seconds, then unleashing a huge burst of flames or something. Feels really good, and I love how she yells the spell's name. That use of vocals reminds me of the satisfaction of playing your favorite card in hearthstone.

Take this with a grain of salt because it's just my guess, but: My understanding is that the owners of GDQ are constantly trying to eliminate all sources of risk. When they make changes to GDQ, it's often that nothing particularly bad happened, but rather, they've identified something bad that could happen, a potential risk.

For example, sometimes runners get banned and it seems like an overreaction. But from another point of view, if the runner's commentary gets anywhere near breaking rules, then that runner is a risk. Another example, super metroid being missing this time, I believe phantoon almost messing up the SGDQ finale is partially to blame (although I've also heard other separate reasons it is not here this year).

They want GDQ to be controlled and predictable, and I respect that. Admittedly, sometimes risk is fun. But, they are a business, a seemingly well-run business. GDQ gets hired by these charities to make profit. All it would take is one mistake, and these charities would cut ties with GDQ and end the business.

So yeah, I bet the crowd cams were just too risky, why let random people do anything on camera?

DLC2 is excellent IMO. The shrines are easily the most well-designed shrines in the game, and the other stuff you do is mostly fun, occasionally meh. It keeps getting better the farther you get into it, the final things you do and the final reward are all awesome, I thought.

It's cool how it is structured similarly to the main game: (this spoils how long the DLC is, so I'll hide it if anyone doesn't want to know that): You do some things on the plateau, then you do some things in the corners of hyrule, then you do a final big thing.

Oh also, I played it on my master mode file. It was the perfect difficulty I thought!! Very hard stuff, but doable. DLC1 was waaaay too hard on master mode.

I had stomach flu today also, think I'm through the worst of it. My advice is, don't eat, but definitely do take small sips of pedialyte all the time (or hydrolyte or whatever pharmacy hydration drink). Gotta get those electrolytes and potassium back.

The fever is good, that's one way your body's killing the infection. Just lay down all day with a thick blanket, and let your body do its job. Put on some movies to pass the time.

If you're getting a bad headache because you're really hungry, nibble on some bread, but only a little bit. You'll know when you're actually ready to eat again, but take it easy then too.

Yep totally agree, that is an annoying feature, just pointing out that the huge mass of moons unlocked by the cubes are not the annoying ones, since those do not punish you if you've already explored an area. (they're on the map, so they need no re-exploration)

Also one of my bigger gripes is that many moons are inaccessible your first time in an area for no reason. There are some moons where this makes sense, you look at the area and see that its changed as a result of your actions, so you want to go explore. There are some where nothing has changed but now there is suddenly a moon there because reasons. Many of the timer challenges are especially guilty of this.

You are basically being punished for exploring your first time in an area, because you are just going to be made to do double work.

Yes this same feeling happens AGAIN after you beat the game. So there's really no point in exploring until you've completely finished the game and you're revisiting levels which doesn't seem like great design in a game sold on exploration.

Actually the moons that are unlocked after you've finished the game, get shown on the map. So when those are added, you shouldn't feel like you have to re-explore previously explored areas.

(But besides those moons, I agree that one of the main flaws in the game is trying to explore and some stuff is unavailable for no reason (like many hat doors for example).)

All right ultimate final prediction:

1-Super Mario Odyssey
2-Nier
3-Zelda
4-Cuphead
5-Horizon
6-Destiny 2
7-Wolfenstein 2
8-Night in the Woods
9-Steamworld Dig 2
10-Pyre

However, I've never been correct about what game wins Giant Bomb goty #1. Pretty sure this year though, because Mario has the enthusiasm, and everyone generally loves it, and there are not many obvious arguments against it.

Nier has the enthusiasm but too many problems that even Alex readily agrees with (environments, gameplay, length).

Zelda definitely 3rd I think, Dan will save energy for Mario, and Jeff and Ben really dislike it, and there are too many easy arguments against it (even though IMO it's maybe best game of all time).

Fairly confident about Cuphead 4th. The rest, meh, did my best.

I really hope Nier doesn't win, because I always feel embarrassed when games win goty for mostly story alone, makes me feel embarrassed for games as a medium, like they're "just another storytelling medium but worse".

Not to knock SMO, but Im kinda surprised that people are blown away by it. Its really the same formula as 64 and Sunshine but with the capture mechanic and way more moons. And reportedly a better post game. I avoided most footage after E3 and I still feel like I saw too much.

I think the crucial formula change is, when you get a moon, you don't get sucked out of the level, you just resume whatever you were doing. I thought getting sucked off like that was pretty much a dealbreaker in those games, for secret shines and optional shines and such.

I dunno if it's fair to hold it against this game if it is different than metroid 2, I mean, they didn't even call this one metroid 2. Just consider it a retelling, not a remake!

I assume the elevators are all for technical reasons, not sure though. I never thought loading times made that much sense on a cartridge.

OK I finished this game, 9:30, 55%.

I really can't decide if I like it or not. I think it was just too long, and not enough variety. Certainly not 9 hours' worth.

I'll try to stay positive though: I liked the combat, counter felt great, and sometimes I'd be exploring and actually worried about my health. Definitely liked the metroid fights. I enjoyed improving my aim, leading my shots and perfecting my strategies. Some of the fights were repeated way too many times though.

Cool powerups too, I enjoyed experimenting with aeon abilities.

But the world is not very exciting. You look for metroids, then you look for more metroids, again and again. They don't really introduce new enemies, and all the areas feel pretty much the same. Exploring a single "area" is pretty fun, but I didn't need to do it so many times.

This would have been an fantastic game if they took about half of the world out, I think.
