Oh I'd say 1's ending is probably my favorite ending of any video game. Besides maybe MGS2.

BUT I reckon, already knowing the ending, might make it better. The ending is not 100% straightforward to understand, your first time seeing it.

But yeah they're fantastic games, even if you don't care about the story.

(Klonoa 2's story is also pretty good, but nothing to write home about.)

Lemme make a defense of Harmony of Dissonance though, 'cause I really love it (not as much as AoS tho).

HoD's music, graphics, and map design, when looked at individually, are pretty abrasive, dissonant maybe even.

BUT, I dunno, when you put them all together, I really like it!

Sometimes, I kinda want to get lost in a complicated castle with a lot of dead ends and keys--it's why I didn't really like Dread which always locks you into two rooms to make sure you don't have to worry about the entire map.

And I kinda like the feeling of being in a part of the castle where the visuals and sound are a little unsettling, off-putting. A lot of the underground parts of Castlevania 3 feel this way too, I think, especially some of their absurd color palette choices (flourescent colors mixed with super dull colors).

I genuinely find the story pretty creepy too; when I think about this game, Maxim's scary unpredictable behavior is one of the first things I think of, and how in most of the endings of the game, he or Lydia just friggin' die.

So I think that's where the Harmony comes in, sometimes it's cool to make a game where all the pieces are a little displeasing to experience. I think to really be gothic horror, you gotta be a little ugly.

You should check out Monolith, on steam. Extremely similar to Isaac, being a shooty top down roguelike, where you explore a bunch of single-screen rooms, then you fight a boss to go to the next floor. BUT it is sci fi, pixel art, and you use the mouse to aim. (Surprisingly, no dual joystick support.) The gameplay is great.

I enjoy it a lot more than Isaac, 'cause I never liked that only-shoot-4-ways of isaac, and I didn't like how hard it was to understand the powerups in Isaac.

The downside is, Monolith is pretty shallow, from what I can tell--I bet it has <10% of the depth of Isaac games. I haven't played either one for more than a few hours tho.

I actually don't think "Dread" is a good name for the game at all. I would classify the Emmi sections as being 75% Stealth, 25% Playing Tag, 0% Horror. I'm surprised anyone would find them scary, beyond how much any other Stealth game would be scary.

Especially when compared to the SA-X sections of Fusion. Just thinking about the echoing stomps of those boots makes me uneasy.

I might even say the Zero Suit section of Zero Mission was scarier, since you have no suit, feels so vulnerable.

Plot question

For how long people have known about Samus being a Metroid? like, was it a common knowledge? I thought this is something new that was revealed in this game but it seems like it didn't surprise anyone

Spoiler's about the first 5 minutes of Metroid Fusion: Samus gets infected by X, she almost dies, but scientists save her by injecting her with Metroid DNA, which is really powerful against X DNA. This is why she is able to absorb X parasites, for the rest of Metroid Fusion. This is all re-explained in the first 5 minutes of Dread, in case you skipped Fusion.

So yeah that joke technically worked before Dread, it just wasn't as common.

You know, Simon's Quest might actually be a Horror Game though:

  • The way villagers talk to you is pretty unsettling
  • The way the towns look, kinda scares me for some reason
  • It is more about puzzle solving, than combat
  • Nighttime is scarier than daytime
  • It has a bit of a survival horror aspect, since it is hard to heal
  • The game structure has a lot of backtracking, like an early Resident Evil
  • The mansions have surprise traps (the missing floors)
  • It feels low budget
  • It is bad

To me, Castlevania is horror-themed much more than it is horror.

Yeah. For example, if someone was "a fan of horror games", nobody would ever say "oh then you should play Castlevania, it will be right up your alley".

'Cause when it comes to video games, when we say "Horror", we only really use that word to refer to gameplay, not theme. That's just how it is, in the world of video games.

I think the only argument that Castlevania is horror, is basically an argument of "sure, why not, I could see it". But in practice, nobody would ever use the word "horror" to explain Castlevania to someone.

OK just finished! Here is my ranking of the 7 stories:

#7 ("the bottom line") was awesome

#4 ("what I didn't like") was great, just good clean fun

#6 ("season of trash") was great, and weird as hell, almost too weird. almost

#2 ("the graphics") was good, especially if you'd rather hear about tim's PC than cyberpunk 2077 (and I do)

#1 ("citizen keanu") was pretty good, but not terribly interesting if you already generally know about the game's pre-release hype

#5 ("the point: the something equation") I liked, but definitely do NOT pick this one if you're only picking two, this is better as an intermission to the whole thing

#3 ("what I liked") I enjoyed, and I agree that it serves a good purpose, but it's not really what I'm coming to the channel for (mostly a plot synopsis)

---------

SO if you're going to follow Tim's rules and just pick two stories from 1 through 6, and you haven't picked yet, I'd definitely recommend #4 and then follow that with #6. (And then the required #7 of course.)

HOWEVER if you like the channel I strongly recommend watching all 7 parts in order, completely ignoring the rules. I still think this review has the least repetition of any of the reviews so far.

I'm watching all the parts in order, so far I have watched the intro, and stories 1, 2, and 3.

So far, it seems like a totally reasonable way to watch. I'd even say it is less redundant than the tokimeki memorial review.

If anyone is going to skip stories, I would recommend skipping 3, because it is pretty much just an explanation of the main plot and several side quests. So the Tim Rogers-ness doesn't shine through as much.

best to worst:

3 for the gorgeous visuals and details, and the extended Time Turner sequence is awesome IMO (I rewatch this movie waaay more than the others

6 because it's funny and chill (much like the book!)

7-2 for being super exciting nonstop, being good looking, and does a good job on the twists

7-1 for having so many locations, and nailing the weird "sad camping adventure" vibe, especially nailing the heartbreaker ending

2 for being extremely faithful to the book, which is just a great murder mystery. however, the first 30 mins of this movie are torture

5 for doing an incredible job with Umbridge and Luna. however, the movie is really hard to follow (I'm shocked anyone who hasn't read the book can follow this movie) (also how dare they cut the st. mungos stuff)

4 is mostly boring, but the dragon is good, and the cemetary is good. also pretty unfaithful to the book IMO (didjaputchanameinthegobletofiyah)

1 is mostly boring (but so is the book, IMO!! compared to the rest of the series anyway)

Made great progress. Got to the three archives, finally finding a way past fire guy. That motherfucker. I discovered that they disappear when the dam breaks almost by accident (one was chasing me at the exact moment it broke). Is there a more elegant way of finding the solution to that that I'm missing?

I think the expectation is, you'll go inside the building, get caught, and then be like huh...maybe I'll start over, go inside the building, and just stand at the bottom of the stairs for a while--you can wait there for a long time, because the door closes right behind you (nobody else follows you!). If you do that, you'll wait a couple minutes, and then the dam breaks, and then you'll see them disappear right before you do. Then you'll realize, ahh, maybe I can rush back there somehow, now that they're gone!

Ooh this is the album that got me into Rancid, one of my favorite bands. These days I like most of their other albums more, because this one is so homogeneous, which as said above, makes it hard to rank the songs.

Or so I thought!! But actually I had no trouble. I'm still really hyped about the top 6 songs here, I still like songs 7 through 13, and I'm pretty sick of songs 14-17. And, 18 and 19 I never really liked.

  1. The 11th Hour (I once told someone this was my favorite song of all time, in middle school)
  2. Journey to the End of the East Bay (If I wanted someone to like Rancid, I'd show them this song)
  3. Old Friend (do I just like this because I live in Cleveland?)
  4. Avenues & Alleyways (the final chorus has an extra harmonizing backing vocal that I love)
  5. Daly City Train (when the bass kicks in at 0:20, feels so good)
  6. Olympia WA. (tim introducing this song: "this is a song about new york... it's called Olympia WA!" so funny to me)
  7. Roots Radicals (very fun to sing along, great bass)
  8. The Wars End (very fun to sing along, the early tempo change is rad)
  9. Junkie Man (it's all about that weird interlude with the poem around 2:00)
  10. You Don't Care Nothin' (surprisingly unformulaic. I like the "about me, about me" part)
  11. Listed M.I.A. (it's the 3 stomps before the chorus)
  12. Lock, Step & Gone (maybe a little repetitive, but the bridge in the middle is good)
  13. As Wicked ("hey grrl I'll be your friend but who's keeping score" I like this weird line)
  14. Time Bomb (I'm sorry tim I'm pretty sick of this song, a little too repetitive, crazy catchy tho)
  15. Maxwell Murder (I wish the chorus was better, and I kinda think this style of bass solo is a little cringe, even though I love bass in general)
  16. Disorder and Disarray (a little forgettable, but the bars right before each chorus are cool)
  17. Ruby Soho (amazing chorus, but the verses are really boring for me)
  18. The Way I Feel (kinda forgettable and reminds me that the album is ending)
  19. She's Automatic (kinda cringe, but not that bad. glad to see others also have it low)

This acoustic no-vocals version of Old Friend that I love, may have greatly boosted my opinion of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFGFbZ7Z_F4

I am finished with the dlc, and I loved it. I do agree, however, that the stealth sections were way too hard and dampered the otherwise exquisite experience slightly. I did actually beat the stealth part in the Cinder Isles with reduced frights off, which I was proud of, but I had to put reduced frights on for the one in Hidden Gorge, I just couldn't do it. Way too overtuned and difficult.

Hmmm, "Hidden Gorge stealth section", is that the place that is in the dark world, 1 big house, above a canyon? If so, I wonder if you were trying to do it an unintended way. 'Cause I reckon the intended way is to: lower the elevator next to the house, then go extinguish the house itself, which opens the doorway at the bottom of it...but instead, jump in the water, then go to dark world again using the Tower instead of the hidden gorge, then take a boat to the elevator next to the house, take the elevator up, then you're very close to the opened doorway, no stealth needed. Because that seems like the only reason that elevator is even there, and it's a lot of work to lower it.

definitely not going for 100%, too many speed booster puzzles, don't like those.

opinion on the last boss: it was really hard, but I liked it! And I'm not someone who likes hard bosses ever.

...but I actually think the hardest thing in the game for me, was not a boss, but one of the later emmi sneaking missions. I'm dreading doing that again next time I play this. I don't even really know how I got through it, felt like I kinda got lucky. I really liked all emmi stuff until that part.

for most (or all?) bosses in the back third of the game, my strategy was basically to repeatedly use lock-on missles, was that true for everyone else?

And boy did I get sick of looking at that map, in the back third of the game, it's so complicated. I guess I can probably see why they had to make it more complicated than the classic sotn-style map, because whenever you get a new powerup, you really need some help finding out where you're supposed to use it. But oof, my eyes.
