yep I'd exclude Metroid 1 from being a Metroidvania. the lack of map really leads to a very different experience I think (a crappy one)

There are a couple more, though the places they let you explore are optional IIRC. Wolf, super jump, snorkel for water. You also need items/equipment to go certain places, I think, like the spike breaker armor.

ohhh right, the snorkel's a pretty good example

OoT isn't a metroidvania. Plot flags open areas up, not your abilities. Also, it has distinct dungeons.

Maybe an individual dungeon is like a mini-metroidvania, where there's the pre-item phase and the post-item phase. But the game as a whole is a Zelda-like, not a metroidvania

I know it's kind of a separate discussion, but IMO "abilities unlocking new areas" shouldn't be a requirement to be a Metroidvania.

Because like, it doesn't even happen that often, within one of these games. And if you took it out of these games, the games would feel p much the same I think.

In Symphony of the Night, there's the double jump, the mist, the bat...and that's it, right? Other areas get unlocked by keys, switches, or plot.

In Metroid Fusion, areas are almost always unlocked by the plot, or by switches.

Etc...

I really just feel like you need the cool map that fills itself in. That makes it easy to exclude stuff like Castlevania 2

I believe IGA has been on record that SOTN was more inspired by Legend of Zelda than by Metroid (makes sense since Metroids never been that popular in Japan) so the connection is even looser

Well if they really did independently come up with the format, maybe that's more reason to put both names into "metroidvania"

but anyway I'm realllly starting to like the phrase Exploration Action after this thread. such a useful term

just out of curiosity, what was the context here?

Mike revealed he's never seen any Simpsons episodes (basically) and Dan and Mary were like, it's likely the greatest comedy show ever, you have to see more of it. So they came up with a list of 30 episodes they remember being great (not ordered) (mostly Dan) and gave it to Mike, and he's gonna watch a handful every week and report back.

I'm from Cleveland and still live here!

Guardians is a great name, I love it. There's a very tall, very old, very useful, art deco bridge, 50 feet away from the stadium, that has a bunch of old statues on it, called the Guardians of Transportation (as seen in the picture above), so it is a cool meaning. Cooler than the meaning of most team names, anyway.

Here's the google street view of two of the statues, and the stadium in the background (I'm surprised the image posted above didn't pan 2 feet to the right to show the stadium lol!): https://www.google.com/maps/@41.4927797,-81.6882384,3a,75y,28.14h,99.26t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sD4RYZc00eKq1VQd3QTn1cA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Spiders would have been good too, because of all the visual baseball stuff you can do with webs and catching things.

However, I'm glad Spiders didn't get picked, because I don't want people to get tricked into thinking there are more spiders here than any other place--when actually, there aren't very many icky critters here at all, of any type. We have enough trouble tricking people into living here already!!

Oh yeah, I saw that SNL performance and thought it was pretty good.

It strongly reminded me of one of my fav artists, Alanis Morissette, who you probably already have heard to some degree. She's in a similar territory of being very famous when she was very young. I don't think she's generally considered "pop punk", probably because her most famous album Jagged Little Pill, is more on the side of 90s alt rock.

But this is one of my favorite of her songs, which came way later in her career, and I'd say it's pop punk:

I kinda liked the factory at first, but it quickly became the exact same 1v1 fight repeated over and over--the fight against one of those guys with the red spot on their chest! It felt like 20-30 repeats of the exact same 1v1 fight, and they didn't even try to change it much each time, except doing it in a different hallway each time. And it's a pretty boring fight--you backpedal until they reveal the spot, you shoot it, you wait, you backpedal again...

OK, a couple times they did change it up (this guy has two drill arms, this guy has armor plating), but it barely made a difference, and, then they'd go back to the same normal 1v1 fight again next time. Maybe a couple times it was a 1v2, but really, one of them is in front, so it might as well be a 1v1.

I don't think 1v1 fights in general are very good in video games, unless the opponent is extremely versatile or interesting (e.g. fighting game genre, or a boss or miniboss fight), and even then, you can't repeat the same 1v1 fight multiple times in a row.

Fan Death boss was very good though.

RE8: Village is good, Castle is amazing, Dollhouse is good, everything after is pretty boring...

RE4: Village is amazing, Castle is good but gets boring after a while, Island is kinda meh...

RE2 Remake: Police Station is amazing, Sewers meh, don't like the Lab at all...

As a pretty intense SNL fan, who watches it live, and rarely misses an episode...

Yeah, that sketch was pretty bad.

But, most live comedy sketches are pretty bad--I don't think it's that easy to write one, especially 40+ seasons into a show. And, an episode is put together all in one single week usually, so they barely even have time to rehearse. And, jokes are often swapped in/out minutes before the show begins, so you can't really memorize anything, you have to read the cue cards.

And, these live sketches truly are live, so there's no covering up any mistakes, you just have to roll with it. Maybe something seemed funny on paper, but isn't working at showtime, but you can't back out.

To top it all off, in this case, Elon and Grimes (princess peach) aren't comedic actors...so of course their timing's not gonna be very good.

The reasons to watch SNL are, in my opinion:

  • Weekend update, which I think is genuinely great.
  • The occasional good sketch (probably about 10% to 20%) (pre-taped ones slightly more often).
  • The monologue when a stand-up comedian hosts (they always do a great job).
  • Just, the enjoyment that comes with watching live comedy, which is a pretty rare thing!

Hmmm that does sound like a potentially cool lineup.

I actually wasn't a big fan of the era of the Bombcast where Brad hosted. My favorite part of giant bomb is the silliness, and Brad hosting made the show feel very serious.

I don't think it was his fault--I love Brad and I think he has a good sense of humor, but I think he would ask a lot of questions, and Jeff's instincts were to answer right away, because he knew the answer, and it didn't really leave much room for any jokes, or really much input from the others at all.

If anything, the problem was Jeff being too knowledgable. A good solution to this is making him the host, as it forces him to prompt others to talk, plus, Jeff naturally is very silly when he hosts things (e.g. the aftershow, or whenever he guest-hosted the bombcast), so it ensures the show gets the silly atmosphere.

Of course, maybe they wanted to go for a serious atmosphere, and decided to leave the silliness to the Beastcast, that's fine too--just wasn't my cup of tea.

+1 vote to FF7's end of disc one, I mean it's extremely close to "Luke I am your father", which is what the OP asked. Both of them might as well be historic memes.

Although ironically, I don't even think that's the biggest twist of FF7. I feel like a better twist comes a few hours later.

Before that, I was a big Opera user for probably 10+ years.

(Although, I always have a Chrome instance open as well, I usually play background music from there. I just find a lot of advantages to having two different browsers open.)

I'm shocked Firefox is so popular here, I remember liking it a long time ago, but it quickly got janky, and still feels janky whenever I open it today. I probably need to give it more of a chance, 'cause I do enjoy reading their tech articles about their rendering and stuff.

I hadn't enjoyed a new Metroidvania game in a long time, I thought I might be "over" the genre...

...but I actually super enjoyed Bloodstained! I love it.

The key to what made it so good, was how it kept adding fun light-hearted systems, as you progress through the game. As soon as you think "ok cool, this is all the systems, nice", they suddenly add yet another one.

It's also not very serious about its balance, which I really respect. I think part of the fun of single player video games is slightly breaking them.

I love the galaxy games a lot, but I have to admit, they don't hold my attention as much as my favorite video games. I have never finished 1, and probably only finished 2 once, but have started replaying it several times since then. Definitely didn't have the energy to 100% either one.

Odyssey on the other hand, I 100%ed twice in a row in the first several months, and then beat it again a year later.

I think the problem with Galaxy 1 and 2 is the hub world and world map--every time I get sent back there after a level, there's such a temptation to take a break, and shut down the console. And then I never feel like spending the effort starting it up again.

But Odyssey extremely rarely sends you to a hub/map, and the switch has all the sleep/resume stuff.
