Just saw it earlier tonight. Initial impression is it was "okay". Like it didnt really wow me that much. CGI Carrie Fisher looked and sounded real enough that I never felt like Rey was talking to a green screen or something.
Still want to put The Force Awakens as the best of the sequel trilogy but this is deff second.

That wasn't CGI.

That was unused footage they shot from TFA.

It's why Rey is wearing her TFA garb.

is it just me or did they use like, the exact same shot of Rey hugging Leia as TFA

I mean, obviously, I totally get it, so I can't fault them for it, but it did distract me

The one thing I can't knock this movie for is Leia's premature death since that's obviously nobody's fault although it's unfortunate that of all the things they DIDN'T plan in this trilogy, this was the ONE thing they weren't able to call an audible on

Afaik the script for the last jedi was being written before the force awakens was even out.

What's more is that Rian Johnson (imo someone who was not established enough to get the directors chair for the movie in the first place) had shown in his few past works he likes to screw convention and expectation. So even it he did get some info it's very likely he'd ignore it

Same here. I thought the Leia scenes were the weakest part. Much of Leia's dialogue made no sense in the context of the scenes she was in. It's unfortunate they didn't have enough spare footage to make something more coherent. In retrospect, I think it would have been better to cut out all of her scenes up until her savior moment. Would have been very powerful to have her only presence in the film to be to give her life force to stop Palpatine.

Along with that, I would have cut out all of the rebel base stuff. Have the small number of rebels either just in space or planet hopping. The near destruction of the rebels was one of the best things TLJ did. Then give some more screentime to what Lando did to recruit the new fleet.

Finally saw it.

It wasn't the end of the world, but it was certainly not good. Definitely the worst of this set, but still above the prequels....contemplating it's placement compared to RotJ.

Really it's just a stark contrast that this 20 second clip of two nobodies dicking around and saying nothing in The Madalorian is better than the entirety of Episode 9 and is ALSO TECHNICALLY JUST A FANSERVICE MOMENT. So even on the grounds of being fanservice wankery Episode 9 isn't doing it.

I saw it tonight in 4DX. I had no idea that was a thing but I also never watch movies in theaters (or watch movies much at all these days) so I decided to give IX a go with this weird immersive experience.

4DX was pretty cool. Lotta air puffs to my head. The back punches were a fun touch.

I enjoyed the movie and from an outside observer of the SW fanbase I didnt get much of the criticism in this topic. But then Ive also never found any of the films to be that great, including the OT. Id probably rank the ST above the OT even (but the PT is still last, ugh the acting/script were so bad there... painful).

I might have TRoS at the top of my rankings, which probably seems abhorrent to the superfans of the series. Either that or TFA. It took me two watches to get on board with TLJ. I still find the OT to be basic and more just relics of their time. Very cheesy and overhyped. Again, blasphemous opinions, but I rewatched the OT before TFA and did not get what made them so good. They were fine, simple, but not much more. Kinda like I had to be there at the time, or have been raised on them, to truly fall in love.

TRoS wasnt perfect and Ive definitely begun to question more of it after reading through the problems brought up in this topic, but then Im also like... well, Im not sure Ive ever loved SW more than anyone here anyway, so perhaps Im not critical enough of the series, or Im viewing it wrong, or its just not my jam (despite enjoying the ST a decent amount). A part of me wonders if SW needs to be viewed so critically, because I dont think its intended to be, but the other part of me gets it. Im fairly critical of the stuff I go crazy for, so why not SW? I dunno!

I really enjoyed the film. I felt it rounded out the overarching stories really well and mostly everything was a good conclusion.

I am surprised people are shocked at Rey being a Palpatine. It was so obvious. She was never going to be a skywalker....that was Kylo Ren's thing....so I always just assumed she was of the other big lineage. And was right. And Im fine with it.

The one thing I have issue with was the use of Leia's character. I felt it didnt do the character or actress justice. I know they were obviously very limited in what they could do, given Carrie's passing, but I almost feel like an off-screen death pre-movir or a using cgi to increase the role wouldve been better.

So, basically Palpatine made this movie and the ST. The whole Rey/Kylo Ren story was boring, the First Order v. Rebellion war never made sense, and the other characters were all boring.

And Palpatine didn't really make sense, but he was awesome, and I was rooting for him to win by this end of this one.

I wouldn't consider myself a star wars fan really, but c'mon, you have to at least like A New Hope. There are some moments in A New Hope that are like, pure movie magic:

* Obi-Wan's "Use the force, Luke" echoes in Luke's head, and then Luke shuts off his targeting computer
* Han shows up to the final battle right when all seems lost, and he saves Luke from Vader's tie fighter
* Obi-Wan intentionally losing the duel with Vader, to ensure Luke will come back stronger than ever

Luke shutting off that targeting computer has gotta be one of the best moments ever in a movie.

Im watching the RLM review of IX and loving how much this movie makes no sense to fans of SW. I cant say I thought much about a lot of their issues with the movie, but then I kinda feel like these films are hoping for that in the first place.

it wasn't terrible but i didn't really like it.

i'm sure a lot of people have said this already but it felt really MCU-ish, particularly with the rey/poe/finn banter.

palpatine was disappointing. not sure why. he's undeniably one of the best aspects of RotJ but in this movie he just wasn't as fun.

there was a lot of cringey fanservice but is it just me or was this even worse in TFA? like, in that one they couldn't go two minutes without C-3PO saying "THANK THE MAKER" or whatever. obviously TFA was the better movie but yeah.

I'm pretty sure 3PO is in TFA for all of 30 seconds and never says "Thank the Maker." He just makes a joke about how Han probably didn't recognize him because of his red arm (which the movies never explained), and that was it.

TFA was a callback to A New Hope, but I don't feel like the fanservice was quite as overt as RoS was.
