I would've been fine with Rey Palpatine if they hadn't given us the "no one" thing in TLJ. It still kinda works, but I wish it felt less like a retcon.

I didn't really mind talking about it on B8 because basically all of the TLJ complaints here had more depth and were interesting to read about, but the shit you see elsewhere blows my mind. Like when Luke beats the shit out of Rey in about 15 seconds in TLJ, and people use it as evidence that Rey is an OP Mary Sue even though she got destroyed and so obviously outclassed (because she pulled a lightsaber on him when he had no desire to do the same to her). And once that's been clearly shown to you - that in this particular instance you're wrong, and your criticism is objectively off the mark - you can do one of two things.
1) Accept that you were wrong in this particular instance - which doesn't mean you have to love the movie, just that maybe you dislike it slightly less now? It's not some big sweeping thing.
2) Double down and keep trying to argue that Rey is an OP Mary Sue (which, before this movie at least, isn't even totally without merit) using a scene where Luke disarmed her and beat her in 15 seconds as evidence of that, somehow?

The kind of person that would choose option 2, and there are a fucking lot, would appear to be an intractable lunatic more concerned with winning an argument on the internet than enjoying Star Wars, or even watching Star Wars, and I'm a bit worried that they chose to try and cater to that kind of person.

Spy Hux was f***ing laughable, probably the worst plot point in the three movies. I get that he was against Kylo but it didn't work.

I know he was against Kylo, but I can't wrap my head around the guy who gave that speech in Force Awakens being a spy. I also found it poorly executed, like the way he just outright says "I'M THE SPY" and then Richard E Grant just kills him 5 seconds later

I can justify it, absolutely, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!

I liked the spy reveal but I wasn't a big fan of killing him off. But I really enjoyed Hux's role so I guess part of the reason I disliked it is that he's gone now and I wish he got a better end.

The thing is I can totally see him turning traitor just because of how he was treated over the past movies. Which is why the reason he actually gives for turning spy is so lame. It would have been much better if he did it solely out of revenge or didn't feel like he belonged in the Order anymore, but apparently he just wanted to troll Kylo? Whatever...

The plot point also could have been used to make his role more interesting, and cause complications for the first order or the resistance. But nope, he just dies immediately afterwards. Wasted potential.

I liked it. The first act wasnt great. I loved the second act. The third act was good though the space battle wasnt much of anything and played out like the parts of a Quidditch match that dont involve seekers.

I have some obvious nitpicks but oh well! Seeing it again with my 8yo so it will be interesting to see her impression.

loved the Rebels nods

I feel like this is going to be a movie the grows on me as I rewatch it.

It's very weird, going in I figured we'd get retconning of 8, a messy plot, and heavy doses of nostalgia, and my thoughts were, "hell yeah sign me up for all of that", but after getting exactly that I'm not really sure how I feel.

I didn't dislike it, but I don't think it's great. There were moments and callbacks that I absolutely loved, fanboyed over, and got emotional because of, but there were so many moments where I literally threw my hands up in the air in the theatre and said, "are you serious?". The issue is that those latter moments always came right before or after the former moments so it impacted my enjoyment of them a little bit.

I thought the second half was immeasurably better than the first half. I enjoyed the references and callbacks for the most part, I liked the ending.

The Leia scenes were all bad, which is really unfortunate. It was a tough position to be in but they were incredibly immersion breaking for me. I couldn't even pretend that they fit. The scene where Kylo and Rey are fighting over the ship in the air with the force is probably my least favourite of the film. I was incredibly angry at both the Chewie and C3PO things and them going back on both of them just makes me annoyed that they even did them in the first place. I also thought the whole "I'm Rey Skywalker" thing at the end was very cheesy.

Better than 8, probably not as good as 7, for me personally, but again I could see it growing on me.

I was avoiding this thread because I have what will probably be the only opinion on this board of it but fuck it, having various opinions is what we live for eh

It's enjoyable but holy fuck did Disney execs freak the fuck out over The Last Jedi internet backlash and make sure to backpedal the fuck to the safest possible space they could with this movie. Waaaaaay too safe and nostalgia heavy for me, at a base level the nostalgia works but on anything more than a surface level it's sort of disappointing to me. I still stand by The Last Jedi being by far the most interesting of the trilogy and actually develops characters in really cool ways that this did not really explore to their potential. It makes me a bit sad, The Last Jedi is now this blacksheep of a unique interesting movie bookended between the two safest movies in the series. And I get that it's Star Wars so them being safe is gonna be totally fine for fans, Star Wars is Star Wars and as long as you have your Star Wars it's fine. But fuck man, the potential of what TLJ set up really sours TRoS for me in alot of respects. I understand why this movie is hitting so well with most fans because it delivers the basic functions but eh, could have been so much more for me having been a big fan of TLJ.

8 > 7 > 9, surprisingly enough and I would have NEVER guessed in a million years I would have my ranking like that. I'm almost ALWAYS a fan of the final movies/games in trilogies and making them my highest ranked.

Anyway hopefully this doesn't ruffle too many feathers, I still enjoyed the movie for what it was.

This.

It would make more sense if he convinced a portion of the FO to revolt against Kylo and Pryde. Doesn't make a damn bit of sense for that guy to go "wtf i love the resistance now" no matter how much he hates Kylo. Dude loved fucking genociding entire planets.

Pretty much agree with what you said about the wasted potential. It was already obvious they got scared about the backlash which is why they went back to Abrams. He's the safest choice.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I still highly enjoyed this movie bc I just love being in that universe. But it is unfortunate that we didn't get more payoff from the interesting ideas of TLJ. Which remains the best movie in the trilogy.

I don't think your opinion on the backpeddling is that unusual. Like the comment about the Holdo maneuver felt really forced to me. But, at the same time, I'm not really sure what the best way to have handled it was. Lightspeed kamikaze attacks are too powerful to be widely available and would completely change the balance of the final battle. I guess they could have just ignored it anyways? Or maybe a better explanation on why it doesn't work other than just saying it doesn't.
