I loved Rogue One from start to finish. Partly because I went in knowing nothing, expected nothing, and then I was blown away by the last hour of it in particular. That probably ranks high for me.

I was probably a bit to young to see some of the obvious flaws in the prequels when I first saw them, but even now I don't really dislike them because they all have somethings going on for them. Even if what AotC has going on is that there are so many jedi I like from sidestories and what not that are there briefly. McGregor also hardcarries those movies, of course.

Yeah, moments are big for me too. It's why I like TLJ more than TFA. Sure, TFA is consistently good throughout, while TLJ has some real dumb parts, but TLJ's big moments blow anything TFA does away.

Also, hot take: the prequels have the best lightsaber battles in the series and I love every single one of them. The choreography is so much fun! The more grounded lightsaber fights of the sequels were relatively disappointing in that regard (though the throne room sequence in TLJ is still awesome, as is Luke vs. Kylo if that counts).

Return of the Jedi is a very beautiful, intricately crafted battle on three fronts. The Ewoks ground game, the space-based Death Star assault and Luke's final battle with Vader crescendo beautifully together. It's a dance of sorts, a ballet and an opera on screen. I think the emotional beats are excellent, and the dialogue is surprisingly terse in the film and yet it conveys every necessary emotion. The music in RotJ is what I consider second-best for the series, and Han in a purely comedic role pretty much sealed his position as my favorite Star Wars character.

What Returns has is everything I want in Star Wars. It was the final movement of a fantastic symphony, and it hits every grace note.

No it wasn't.

The one on the Death Star is Palpatine himself. His spirit survives through Sith sorcery and jumps to a clone in the EU. There's no implication in the current canon that it was a clone on the Death Star, and he in fact says he's died before. We don't know for sure how he did it in the current canon but something similar to the EU is likely.

But in neither canon was the Palpatine aboard the Death Star a clone.

One of the rebels mentions Sith sorcery and cloning techniques as a possible explanation for his return.

I don't think Palps ever mentions clones and if he does he definitely doesn't say the one in RotJ was a clone.

Yeah I'll take an average movie with some amazing stuff over a movie that's just good the whole time generally, so I rate RotJ pretty highly.

RotJ beats out ANH for me just cause that Throne Room stuff is SO GOOD. A New Hope is the better movie front to back but it doesn't really have any peaks for me.

ESB has the peaks and doesn't have the bad fluff of RotJ so it's best but yeah.

Thought ROTJ was a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy when I watched the movies last year. Admittedly it isn't that great as a standalone film, but it's not a standalone film so it's not fair to judge it solely as that. It's a feature-length Act 3, and as that it's pretty amazing! I do understand most of the common complaints against the film, but I've never disliked the Ewoks.

It has a few imo, though none are as high as the throne room.

The trench run is obviously the highest, but the opening battle on the Tantive IV, Luke making it back to his destroyed home and resolving himself to go to Alderraan (If you think emotional downer scenes like that can be 'peaks', at least) and the old man lightsaber duel and the end of the Death Star escape all qualify in my book.

You're right that it trades out the really high highs of RotJ for more consistency but I disagree that it has no particular standout moments.

I guess I meant to say that the stand out moments don't hit nearly as well with me. I definitely see parts that are supposed to be that way-- the trench run in particular as you mentioned is the obvious one, but yeah.

I wonder if Rey being a Palpatine was just pulled from the fan theories to be used in TRoS. If that was the plan from the start, it seems weird to me that they would go out of their way to make it seem like Rey's bloodline was unconnected to any of the preexisting big names in TLJ.

Yep. Not sure why Disney thought it would be a good idea to hand the guy who wrote himself into a corner in both Lost and Fringe the responsibility of setting up a trilogy in this way

He is famous for creating plot threads that are impossible to resolve

Cause it's definitely not Rian Johnson's fault for purposefully shitting on everything JJ was trying to set up and leaving him with a mess to clean up.

The thing that bugs me about there being a "Rey Palpatine theory" two years ago is that it's really more of a "guess" than it is a "theory." There isn't really any textual evidence to support the idea in the previous two movies, which is why I think it seems kind of stupid in this one, and while that's a reasonable enough guess to make about what might happen in this one, it's really not a theory.

I think it's almost a certainty that this wasn't planned from the start but was an improvisation based on episode 8 and the reaction to that movie. Like, nobody believes that the "your parents are nobody" reveal in episode 8 was a deliberate fakeout this whole time just to reveal that she was a Palpatine in episode 9, right? Hell, the reveal in episode 8 was given a great deal more dramatic weight than the reveal in episode 9.

Yep not making an actual trilogy really fucked them over.

Hell I'm pretty sure someone thought they'd make Maz into a more important character(She was one of the first to get a transition scene in Star Tours) but she was needlessly benched for the second movie(And her replacement completely erased from the third I believe).
