Most of the people who say fat shaming is good because it makes them healthier feels like rationalization. They're not really doing it out of a desire to make other people healthier. They want to be able to make fat jokes and consider fat people beneath them without feeling guilty. At least the people who say fat people are disgusting are being honest.

Even if you genuinely hope that fat shaming will make people healthier, you are wrong.

Fat shaming doesn't work. This is because being fat is not a behavior. It is a result.

We shame smoking, not lung cancer. We shame drunk driving, not getting into car accidents. That's why both these things have gone way down. Because we shame the behavior, not the effect.

But with weight gain, we don't really shame any of the things that lead to it. Eating fatty, unhealthy foods is not shamed. Sitting around binging TV shows is not shamed.

Once you've gained weight, you're already at the point where it's becoming difficult to go back. People have formed habits that are hard to break, and their body's metabolism may have adjusted to make them resistant to weight loss. It's usually not just a matter of jogging a few times a week or eating a little less. You have to make big changes to your daily habits. It's not a matter of getting them to not do something. It's a matter of making them feel motivated to proactively make major changes in their lives. And may be hard to judge how much to change or what is more effective.

Shaming them for who they are is much more likely to drive them into depression and make them give up. Because while shaming can be good for making people avoid specific actions, it's very poor for making them take initiative and so things.

Medical sounds like something you can use bankruptcy to get rid off. It doesn't sound like there is any downside for him to declare bankruptcy

I mean, yeah, but he has medical needs that aren't immediately life threatening, so the hospital/doctor could turn him away and would if he didn't pay his costs

like I guess we could declare bankruptcy and wait for his cancer to become bad enough that they couldnt turn him away from treatment but idk if you've heard of cancer but it might be too late to save his life if I did that

^ to me that kind of false sense of giving a granular view is why the 5 point system is superior

you only think of a 3/5 as unplayable because you are reinterpreting that as a 6/10 and then thinking of all the games that are better

when you flatten the scores, though, a lot of 7/10 will be a 3 rather than a 4, so a lot more 3s are playable than 6s

I mean obviously you need to read the actual reviews but I think the 1-5 system is more open to short, concise explanations like

5/5 - a game that everyone could play and enjoy, even if they aren't necessarily fans of the genre
4/5 - very well-made, a genre staple that even fans of the genre might not enjoy
3/5 - average game or a good game with a serious flaw or two
2/5 - below average, might be enjoyable if you are a big fan of the genre
1/5 - unplayable

with 1-10 it's much harder to think of short explanations that show how a 6/10 and a 7/10 are meaninguflly different. to me at least

I'm more neat than my spouse, but also less clean.

For instance, I'm much more likely to throw away a wrapper or packaging immediately while my girlfriend will potentially leave it out. Or she will get her mail and pile it up and never check it, whereas I will check my mail immediately and throw out the envelopes/junk mail/etc

However, I also do not feel the need to do things like vacuum and mop as often as she does

Often times they just sound stupid, and you're putting your kid at a disadvantage since other kids might make fun of them, it might disadvantage you in a corporate environment, etc.

The only silver lining is since more people are getting named more unique names people might get desensitized to it and lessen the impact it can have.

I think the silver lining is that the weird named kids are all gonna be hanging out with eachother because they're rich as fuck and kids like Connor and Brittany won't have the opportunity to make fun of them.

so, that's an interesting thought

maybe one reason we get so upset over nonstandard names, especially for rich people kids, is that we know they will not suffer the merciless taunting we would in that situation

in short, the ability to explore the full range of possible names for your kids is another form of wealth privilege
