yeah that's a clickbait title. it is also apparently true.

In the world of television in 2016, some of the top-ten predictors of whiteness were watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, American Pickers, The Big Bang Theory and the Kentucky Derby. If were looking at specific brand names, the top 10 included Thomas English muffins, Sweet Baby Rays barbecue sauce and Stove Top stuffing.

More generally, in consumer products, the best predictor of whiteness was whether someone owned a pet followed closely by whether they owned a flashlight. Many of the differences appear to be correlated with wealth and homeownership, areas in which America suffers from vast racial disparities...

To maintain statistical integrity, the authors were able to break the population into only two categories, white and nonwhite, which may hide differences across a large and diverse population.

Within the surveys they analyzed, social attitudes and media habits were almost as closely linked to race as consumer behavior was. The racial differences in social attitudes were particularly notable.

By a relatively large margin, the view that best predicted being white in 2016 was approve of police striking citizens. In previous decades, the best indicator of whiteness was saying that the government was spending the right amount (or too much) on improving the condition of black residents.

He or she would have no reason to assume there would be denaturalization as a consequence of this action, despite the fact that it is technically legal, because it hasn't happened before.

Yep, I already said it has happened before, as recently as 75 years ago. And that occurrence 75 years ago had a more narrow scope than this one does today.

So to be clear, you are saying, yes, she should have prepared for this eventually happening when planning her defense. Right?

Second off, ignorance is no excuse.

For what?

Anarchy_Juiblex posted...
Third, yes I recognize imperfections in the law and the in way it's administered. If we're talking what ifs, maybe she was coerced into a deal because the risk of lose was too great and not professing her innocents was a calculated cost. I don't fucking know, I'm not omniscient.

So why are you so okay with it, when you acknowledge it can be shitty? This isn't even the case where you can play some kind of whataboutism because it has never happened before in the history of our country.

Anarchy_Juiblex posted...
However, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with enforcing the law, unless the laws are fundamentally immoral, which perjury laws are not.

No one is saying there is something 'fundamentally wrong with enforcing the law.'

What is being asked of you here is not whether or not it is fundamentally wrong to enforce the law, but why it is that we have decided to change how to enforce those laws, and what you think about that change. You are not actually engaging that conversation, you are just trying to emphasize how she doesn't deserve to be a citizen because you want to win an argument about how Trump doesn't attack citizens.

Now, you could say that is still her fault for not thinking of every contingency in her own defense.

If so, though, you'd need to deal with the fact that this kind of denaturalization hasn't happened since the McCarthy-era, and even then it was targeting political dissidents and not secretaries who helped their boss commit fraud.

So far as I know, that has never been a thing before in the U.S.

So are you really saying that she should have anticipated this eventuality back when Obama was still trying to pass the ACA?

none that i am aware of

So, I don't follow this as closely as I have in the past, but my general sense of how things have progressed:

Lots of emphasis on the House post-2016 election, especially because of special elections in that chamber (member Ossoff raising record numbers in fundraising?). But no talk of the Senate that I can recall. Remember, the Dems were supposed to win the Senate fairly safely in 2016, so there was little enthusiasm.

But then after Democrats lose a bunch of special elections (the aforementioned, that dude who body slammed a reporter but won anyway, a close race in South Carolina), and the fact that Roy Moore was a bad candidate that keeps getting worse, makes Doug Jones the great white hope for Dems to actually get a special election win in 2017, which they do.

Because of this, many journalists start talking about the Dem chances of taking the Senate, with some writing about it as a toss-up, even though the fundamentals haven't changed

Now I guess we're coming back around to the realization that the fundamentals haven't changed

Switch is selling well, but it's still behind the other 2 consoles.

I'm just saying that a general defense of respectability politics rings hollow to me unless you can square this circle -- for example, I can imagine the person who inspired this thread saying that it's different because people protesting outside planned parenthood aren't just opposing people who support abortions but the people who actually get them

but that would just change the terms of when politics of respectability are appropriate, and that is almost entirely a circular argument from what I can tell

rude/not being polite to political opponents

I mean for my entire life people have been protesting planned parenthoods and been quite rude to women getting abortions (or even who aren't getting abortions but they are going to a place that does abortions)

My position on that has always been it makes sense if you believe about abortion what those people believe about abortion.

But when the shoe is on the other foot, the right triangulates and says stuff like, "you shouldn't be rude or yell at someone JUST BECAUSE of political disagreements, that's childish"

the thing is, when its their politics, they understand that that not all political 'disagreements' are created equal and that sometimes there are ethical considerations that come into play

probably both sides do this to some extent but this is the hypocrisy that I am seeing today so its what I'm talking about on ce
