numeric 1-10 is probably my favourite. 1-5 isn't enough spread, but 1-100 is way more precise than I want to bother with rating anything. Letters are just numbers in disguise. Tiers are alright except the freedom of naming them whatever you want means people will often have a bunch of joke name tiers and it will stop being a ranking and more of a categorization

1-10 is too spread, no one wants to play a 6/10 game but people will play a 3/5 game

I wouldn't intentionally play a 6/10 game or a 3/5 game (it still happens all the time thoguh since games suck)

people only using the top of the scale is even worse in a 1-5 system because you have basically no space for rating at all

None of them. Numerical rating systems erase nuance. Commentary provides more useful information than just numbers and the mere contextual awareness that some numbers represent higher values than others.

I agree with the sentiment here but not the result... I don't want to be playing 3/5 games because I'd rather spend that time playing 4/5 games or 5/5 games. Just because it's not bad doesn't mean it's good, and if I knew in advance that a game I was thinking of playing would end up being a 3/5 to me I'd probably skip it. Not because it's awful but because I have no doubt there are plenty of better games out there as long as I could manage to find them

So you want to be tricked into playing 3/5 games? You're ok with playing 3/5 games as long as they're lumped in with with 4/5 5/5 games? You're happy to play 3/5 games if you don't know in advance that it's a 3/5 game? If anything you seem to be arguing for the 5 star rating system because it clearly helps you manage your time better. If this rating system allows you to skip games you'd rather not play I don't see the problem, or are you saying you do want to play games you wouldn't play if you knew how bad they are?

Well, the 1-10 system does this too, since 3/5 = 6/10, 4/5 = 8/10, and 5/5 = 10/10. They're relly quite similar systems, I just prefer 1-10 because I like being able to give a little more granularity in scores than a 1-5 system allows. That's really my overall thoughts, I guess.

As for the other questions, I wouldn't say I want to be tricked into playing 3/5 games, but rather that I'll probably only play a 3/5 game if I'm tricked. And I'm nt sure tricked is the best word since it implies some sort of intentional effort (maybe malicious) to fool me, when the real reason is more just that it's hard to evaluate the quality of a game until it's too late

^ to me that kind of false sense of giving a granular view is why the 5 point system is superior

you only think of a 3/5 as unplayable because you are reinterpreting that as a 6/10 and then thinking of all the games that are better

when you flatten the scores, though, a lot of 7/10 will be a 3 rather than a 4, so a lot more 3s are playable than 6s

I mean obviously you need to read the actual reviews but I think the 1-5 system is more open to short, concise explanations like

5/5 - a game that everyone could play and enjoy, even if they aren't necessarily fans of the genre
4/5 - very well-made, a genre staple that even fans of the genre might not enjoy
3/5 - average game or a good game with a serious flaw or two
2/5 - below average, might be enjoyable if you are a big fan of the genre
1/5 - unplayable

with 1-10 it's much harder to think of short explanations that show how a 6/10 and a 7/10 are meaninguflly different. to me at least

if I were to give explanations of how I use 10 point scale...

10 - kinda wish I could just replay these endlessly
9 - consistently good with great high points
8 - often good with great high points
7 - has some strong good parts but also has issues
6 - has issues but also has some strong good parts
5 - mostly unremarkable
4 - a slog to get through / requires forcing yourself
3 - would actively unrecommend
2 - no redeeming features really
1 - offensive it even exists

the only one I feel like I really have "reserved" for special cases is 1/10. That's the stuff that doesn't even try
