Entire genres, really.
Like I realize arcade gaming is about the score and all, but some of these old games are basically pay to win... Beat em ups are the worst offender as far as that goes IMO Competitive games largely held up alright, though. --- But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. ... I never found beat em ups to be too fair, though I know there must be some way to exploit them.

beat em ups were about learning to kite enemies and manage to kill them without taking any damage. it was possible to play without 'paying to win' so to speak just very, very hard.
like, consider golden axe. the real secret to winning was playing the dwarf and using the charge attack over and over, back and forth, with careful timing. --- And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not. ... Of course they were pay to win, they gotta make money somehow lol. But yeah, they were incredibly cheap ass games. The Konami beat em ups were really bad about this.
