https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2020/07/10/protest-in-detroit-over-officer-involved-shooting-escalates-as-crowds-grow/
----------
DETROIT A protest prompted by an officer involved shooting is growing in Detroit with larger crowds.
Police officers were involved in the deadly shooting. It happened this afternoon at McNichols and San Juan just west of Livernois. Neighbors and police seem to have very different stories.
Protesters chanted about defunding the police and called officers racist.

According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, officers were looking for a person involved in a Fouth of July shooting that left five people hurt and three others dead.
Officers say when they found their suspect they were approached by another man. Somehow a fight happened and an officer put that man in some kind of hold. Thats when officers say the man they restrained opened fire.
He began to fire a number of rounds at the officer over his shoulder. As that was happening the officer pushed him away and that is when the additional officers fearing for their lives fired off several rounds striking that suspect.
----------
Some more stuff in the article, I don't remember the site's rules about posting full articles so I refrained -- there's also video links inside, and the police chief should be holding a press conference right about now. Edits because I can't format for crap anymore

I feel you. The SNES, N64, and PS1 days were simpler times.

I think it was mostly because the lack of money that most of us had back in those days. Getting a new game didn't happen very often and you'd probably already played the hell out of the games you already had.

I've a huge backlog these days, but that was never a thing as a kid.

Also consider that the industry was much smaller 20-25 years ago, and the indie market pretty much didn't exist, so there were a lot less games to play in general. Nowadays your choices are numerous, especially if you own multiple consoles or a gaming PC -- in a few clicks you can queue up just about any game released in the last 20 years.

So in that regard, I can understand tc's issue, there's more to play now than ever before.

I can't say for certain if it's demonized because it's generally seen as ineffective, or if because it's ineffective that it's demonized. What I feel needs to happen instead is for voter turnout to massively increase, and not just in presidential election years; do that and 3rd party candidates might actually have a chance of doing better, especially if they start at the local level and work upwards, instead of just shooting for the white house. Granted, they might actually be doing that, but the news media tends to focus on the presidential election to the detriment of everything else excepting the midterms.

Historically, 3rd party voting hasn't worked at the national level, so a lot of people see it as throwing one's vote away at best, if not helping another candidate at worst.

To be fair, any time I've had the tv or radio news on, they just call it the coronavirus and covid-19. I only see its proper name on news articles. Hell, I've seen it called wuflu and kung-flu more often as well.

A bit, yeah. I've been here since i was 13 (27 now) and it's definitely depressing to see the userbase dwindle over the years, with many remaining become bad trolls or just bitter in general -- i miss the more optimistic and laid-back times of 00's gamefaqs.
Me personally, I've got no plans to pull up stakes and leave, the format of the traditional message board is where im most comfortable, and that's been basically dead for years now. All the web traffic seems to go through at least one major social media site, and most web content that's not from a media conglomerate is just a screenshot of a post from one site posted to another. It's depressing, I miss finding a site with both a message board and an irc channel.

Iirc the first AC game came out before analog sticks were a thing, so that goofy control scheme was a necessity back then. Why they didn't implement a twin stick control scheme until the 5th game released on ps2 (8th in the series) is beyond me, especially since L3/R3 were being used since AC2 (4th game) and iirc you could use LS as a dpad substitute. But going back to the question in the OP that weirdo claw grip likely evolved from the "classic" control layout.

It is rare that a game is exactly as the first plans for it.
Things change during development. Things are added, things are removed, things are replaced, some things are like the butterfly effect, make a small change here and there and something else doesnt make sense so it is removed.
And that is not counting stuff that change because of lack of time.
That specific thing could have been one of that developers own idea that got sacked for one or another reason, and if they had included it it might have had something else removed instead of completing it.
Final Fantasy VII is a great example of this, the first draft was set in New York in 1999, it involved blowing up a Mako Reactor and a witch named Edea.
...yeah, it got a lot of changes, and some ideas were reused in Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy VIII and Chrono Trigger.
Other things that changed during development includes Aeris and Sephiroth being lovers, Aeris and Sephiroth being siblings, Jenova was a part in your brain that specific witches could activate to give you powers (you could also cheat by using Mako, which Sephiroth would do, resulting him being addicted to Mako and getting withdrawal symptoms and losing his mind to the pain), the Ancient Forest had a bigger role in the main story, you were able to cast two spells at once because of a status effect, a sidequest involved you travel around the world delivering letters, only three characters in your group would live at the final battle, SOLDIERS would be injected by Ifalnas cells (Aeris mother) instead of Jenova, Sephiroths body would slowly turn female because of Jenovas cells, Vincent would be a supernatural detective who wielded a scythe in battle, Hojo would create two clones of Red XIII that would hunt you during the game, trying to prove that they were superior to the original, Yuffie was an ex-SOLDIER turned bountyhunter that was trying to hunt down Cloud and Sephiroth, Shinra was in a cold war with Wutai which they tried to crush economically so they could build a Mako reactor there, Reeve would turn off all Mako reactors in order to slow down Sephiroth, the Honey Bee Inn got lots of cut content, etc etc.

Damn, some of that shit is pretty cool.

It's been awhile since I played myself (and I never used that grip) but armored core games didn't use the analog sticks (except r3 and l3) until Nexus, which came out in 04 iirc, and was the 8th game in the series at that point. So you were using R1 and L1 to strafe, and R2/L2 to look up and down
