Who would you pick for the enemies in the immediate sequel?

I've seen them all work well enough in different contexts, but it's always a bit awkward starting from scratch when the first movie or video game leaves no bad guys alive to become recurring villains.

I'm curious what CE thinks on the subject.

The hero as the bad guy in the sequel, who may or not be being possessed by a different bad guy (who is the actual bad guy)

If I had enough foresight, I'd have made "the hero becomes the new bad guy" as one of the options.

I guess we'll just say the poll is limited to the hero returning in the same relative position.

This topic was inspired by American Ninja 2.

I watched it the other night and found it funny that there just happened to be a second group of evil ninja terrorists with no connection to the ones of the first movie.

I mean, I wouldn't write a sequel in that case.

probably the second option, like it often plays out in real life.

like, if you take out a cartel, for example, you'll often have lower ranking members starting their own, and that will lead to the creation of smaller, yet sometimes more brutal, cartels, since they're also warring with each other.

so let's say you stopped Foxhound in MGS, it would have been cool if any remaining members tried to make their own combat units, and were in conflict with not just Snake, since he would be an obvious threat, but also each other because they have competing interests.

You know what, I take it back. I could see myself writing this sequel just to do a deconstruction of sequels.

Some punk who worked for the bad guy's underling's underling's underling learns where the Magical Creation Guffin that gave the bad guy his power is and goes to find it. He never does, but the good guys lose to him anyway. Since he never found it, he goes home and the whole thing might as well have not happened except the heroes are dead. Then, as he's leaving the ice cave where he was sure it was, we see it glowing under the ice right where he was standing and the screen says TO BE CONTINUED, except there are actually no plans to ever continue because this movie is gonna flop like a skinny kid on the blob at camp.

The people who step into the power vacuum, where they may be even worse than what was there before because they have to be ruthless to seize control.

Probably even more than one group.

This is the screenplay you write when you don't actually want to make a sequel, but still want to collect a paycheck.

In big epics i always liked the idea of the follow-up being more about resolving the collective problems caused in the aftermath of defeating the villain. It seems silly that the conflict and associated issues are considered immediately and completely ended, just because the head bad guy is gone.

Also gives time to lay the groundwork for an ubervillain, or even hero-turned-badguy, in part three without that rushed "NEW VILLAIN APPEARS!" feeling.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time it just doesn't work well as a story, and people will see part two as being the weak point as a result.

Yeah, this.

I imagine old Castlevania fans would have been flabbergasted the first time they were playing Symphony of the Night.

I don't often compliment [Prototype] but this is one of the things they did well with the sequel because it gave that lame character (the hero of the first game) a somewhat interesting personality.

I like Well of Ascension, but it's my least favorite of the three.

In the trilogy I'm working on right now, I deliberately tried to avoid the book 2 slump but I think it hurt book 1 in the process.

Worked beautifully in The Godfather Part II. You're right though. Takes skill though to do a good job.
