do you own a blazer/sportcoat?

seriously, what kinda lifestyle do you live where you don't own one?

and can't believe i have to say this, but a suit jacket isn't a blazer/sportcoat. if it has matching pants, it's a suit jacket and doesn't count

note: for the purposes of this poll i'm using blazer and sportcoat as an interchangeable term

it's a standalone jacket meant to be worn without patching pants (that don't exist)

This is spot on. You're always gonna be mismatched with what everyone else is wearing (unless they are all wearing blazers, in which case, run)

Bought a blazer a few months ago, ive worn it twice (once to a fancy party, once to NYE dinner)

There just arent that many times where its necessary. Business stuff calls for a suit, most of the rest of life is casual or business casual

Fine. Hopefully you can see now that you come across as extremely pretentious.

To answer the question, no, I don't own one. I'll buy one when I need one. I know plenty of successful people that don't have them.

I work in academia where, at least in my field, people will think you're highly over-dressed if you wear a blazer. Typical dress for a tenured professor here is jeans, khakis if they're feeling adventurous, and cargo shorts and sandals in the summer. Younger profs that still feel the need to prove themselves will wear button downs and khakis or chinos, but even that is shifting to dark jeans and polos / crew necks.

On the rare occasion when I or a colleague needs to be dressier than that (convocations, interviews where we know everyone will be dressed up, etc.), we'll go for full business suits, not blazers. It doesn't make sense in our environment to have something in that middle ground.

if i want to dress it up i put it on over contrasting dress pants with a shirt, so it looks slightly more relaxed than a suit

navy blazer, white dress shirt, grey pants and brown shoes is the "meanswear uniform"

for a lot of people:
  • blazer would stand out at work. at the company i work for (big, international modern company), even the senior VP's only wear jackets if they're meeting with clients
  • wearing jackets to the bar/club/restaurant is a city thing. in the suburbs, it is more casual. i can think of only a handful of restaurants in my (relatively wealthy) area that justify a blazer (these are the $300+ bill for two restaurants, the $100-$200 for two restaurants are fine with a button up or classy sweater)
  • tbh i am a fan of the jacket with jean/casual pants look, and it won't get you any weird looks most places... it's just not worth the cost of a jacket for 99% of people.

blazers stand out at my new engineering agency...i still wear them, i don't mind being the best dressed guy in the office...standing out isn't bad if it's done well. blazers convey strength in a way no other article of clothing does. also i take it off for huge chunks of the day at my desk

i live in a big city so i guess i didn't consider smaller cities being more casual
