Probably works better with the default control scheme tbh.

What, is AC's default control scheme so terrible that it's better to hold the controller backwards?

It's been awhile since I played myself (and I never used that grip) but armored core games didn't use the analog sticks (except r3 and l3) until Nexus, which came out in 04 iirc, and was the 8th game in the series at that point. So you were using R1 and L1 to strafe, and R2/L2 to look up and down

Exactly!

At least in AC2.

I forgot how weird they were.... you moved fore/back/turned with the Dpad, and the shoulders were to strafe and look up/down. The face buttons were for shooting/locking/boost.

I don't know if they were different in japan, but I do remember there being some games where you used the L1+R1 to go forward, L2+R2 to go backwards, L1+R2 to turn right, etc. If either of these are the case I don't blame em. Pretty sure there was a game where holding the controller nearly sideways was the way to go, but hell if I remember.

This must be an AC5/VD thing because the controls are just fine in all the other games

Armored Core didnt let you aim vertically with the right analog stick until Nexus, which was in 2004/2005. You had to do it with shoulders buttons.

Nexus, Last Raven, 4, for Answer, V, Verdict Day all have standard third person aiming controls.

Iirc the first AC game came out before analog sticks were a thing, so that goofy control scheme was a necessity back then. Why they didn't implement a twin stick control scheme until the 5th game released on ps2 (8th in the series) is beyond me, especially since L3/R3 were being used since AC2 (4th game) and iirc you could use LS as a dpad substitute. But going back to the question in the OP that weirdo claw grip likely evolved from the "classic" control layout.

At first they didn't have any option, but after that, I'm guessing they were mimicking the control of real-world machinery.

I've driven machines that controlled sorta like the horror story above about using the shoulders for locomotion. You had two levers (one left, one right), and sure enough, each controlled the wheels on each side of the machine. Both forward to go forward, both backward to go backward, one of each to rotate. It also had two pedals to control the height and tilt of the bucket.
