Yes they were, especially when you got one game a month and just focused on that >_>

Got Halo MCC, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and Sniper Elite 4. When I start one I start thinking "Maybe I should play the other one instead?". It's bugging the shit out of me. Not to mention the fact I have half a dozen games that are probably an hour from being finished that I can't bring myself to start again.

I feel just burnt out on video games in general.

New video games dont seem like they are really accomplishing much new in terms of gameplay, really the biggest difference we have gotten this console generation is just better graphics and even bigger empty open world games.

@yemmy That's probably pretty accurate, too. Playing Halo Reach and it doesn't feel that much different from other FPS games (never been a big Halo person before so I don't know much about it though). Also hate that the subtitles only work on the cutscenes but not normal gameplay.

I find that I've been playing the same game or two (GTA Online, Minecraft) the most the past couple of gens, yet I have a double digit backlog of other games I could be playing. About the only title that has held my interest this gen is Maneater. Besides that one I did get a kick out of playing in the 'casual' mode of No Man's Sky going around naming planets, plants and animals with weird names since I think the names are seen by everybody else who plays the game.

Most contemporary games are just rehashes of stuff you already played. Especially AAA.

I think it was mostly because the lack of money that most of us had back in those days. Getting a new game didn't happen very often and you'd probably already played the hell out of the games you already had.

I've a huge backlog these days, but that was never a thing as a kid.

Also consider that the industry was much smaller 20-25 years ago, and the indie market pretty much didn't exist, so there were a lot less games to play in general. Nowadays your choices are numerous, especially if you own multiple consoles or a gaming PC -- in a few clicks you can queue up just about any game released in the last 20 years.

So in that regard, I can understand tc's issue, there's more to play now than ever before.

@Guide I want to get more into them tbh but I'm not sure exactly where to start. I beat Superhot in one sitting, I like Celeste but it is hard as fuck.

I'm not big on the metroidvania genre anymore. I did enjoy Masquerade Bloodlines but I never finished it.

If there are some good suggestions for indie titles I would love to try some. I'm not going to get into anything extremely challenging or complicated tbh though.

Edit: the game im talking about i cant even remember the name of, it was a castlevania SOTN clone that was free on Xbox live.

Edit 2, Google found it it was Bloodstained. Not masquerade that was like a ps2 game I think.

A few of this are available on console digital stores, if that's your thing.

Katana Zero - 2d super fast timewarping samurai murder spree. A bit on the difficult side, but checkpoints, time stopping abilities, they're all there to make life easier for you if you want it.

Gunpoint - 2d stealth-puzzle-platformer. Break into buildings, sneak around cameras and guards and such, use your ridiculous future technology to launch yourself like Mario on steroids. Surprisingly involving plot that doesn't get in the way of playing the game.

RONIN - Similar to Katana ZERO and Gunpoint; you have a sword, you freeze time, and you sneak around levels. The difference here is that the timewarpery is mandatory to win, sneaking is mostly just a way to make killing easier, and it's short and sweet.

Mark of The Ninja - Boy, there sure is a running theme here, huh? Sneak around, kill with ninja tricks. Of all these games, it has the most emphasis on stealth navigation, and definitely the most party tricks in the skill tree.

Owlboy - 2d platformer. Extremely pretty. I'll admit, the game design is a bit confused, but if you just want to look at something nice for a long time while dashing around, this is your best bet.

Monaco - Sneak around a blueprint-like world, rob banks, clubs, hotels and such. Each character has a specific ability that'll change how you tackle the level. You don't strictly need co-op, but you'll really want it.

Party Hard - Murder people at parties in darkly hilarious ways. Your goal is to kill basically everyone without getting caught, or if you do get caught, before the police track you down.

Hotline Miami - Shoot everyone as fast as you can. You are definitely on drugs.

A Short Hike - Absolutely nothing like any of that. No murder or anything. Navigate an island, make friends, glide around. Your goal is vaguely to reach the top of a mountain, but there's plenty to explore. Easily the most chill game I've ever played.

This is the actiony stuff. There's plenty of weird/tactical/rpg shit in my library, if that's your game.

It doesn't help that games incorporate time limited events designed to make you have that anxiety of permanently missing out on something if you don't get it, too -_-

I have a month left for this timed event in Runescape and I'm 95% done with it but it's drawing me away from other games just because I'm paranoid I'm going to forget to finish it off.

Also big part of the reason why I quit Battlefield 5, it started to feel like a second job where you *had* to log in to maximize your points and assignment completion to get those timed exclusive cosmetics.

You could try Payday 2. It's just a bunch of levels with an optional correct order instead a one-and-done lap through story mode.

Seems like everyone maybe has a staple game then that they go to in situations like these >_>

@ViewtifulJoe I played a fair amount of PayDay 2 when it launched, now there's so much shit and I'm too lazy to learn builds all over again so I'd feel bad about screwing up someone's game.

The game's constantly on sale and there's newbies everywhere. Quite a few people really take to it if you say up front you're new.
We have more difficulties than any game needs so it's not hard to start really low and climb back up until you find where you're comfy.
You're only 1/4 of the team too so you'd have to be pretty exceptional to tank the entire game by accident, let alone consistently do that.

Make each decision with set minimal expectations: get the details on each option and eliminate anything [from the process] that does not immediately meet those expectations.

Happy gaming! :)

That sounds like my buddies and I with GTA Online. Though my one friend I play with has been AFK a LOT lately when I join him and it's honestly not fun goofing off by yourself in the game. At least to me it's not. I guess that's why I'm gonna try to keep from loading up GTA V/Online on my new PS4 slim I got a week or so ago....once I finally set it up. I might download Minecraft again cuz it's always fun trying to see what sort of things we can build, plus it doesn't tax the system too hard like GTA does.

I also definitely wanna try finishing Maneater, which is a lot of fun even though the 'missions' are kinda repetitive.

@Hexenherz
My buddies and I mostly enjoyed stuff like doing the glitches like launching vehicles into the stratosphere. Then Rockstar patched those all out. Then they made any spot to get in underneath the map (lotsa interiors and other stuff under there) instant death.

I mean I get why they did the latter, since a lot of people in open sessions would hide in walls and stuff and kill other players who went by there constantly.

The heists are a pain though if you don't have a good group to play them with. One failure when playing on hard and you have to start all over. It gets old...fast.

Yeah I remember the basic heists how annoying it was, especially on the stealthier ones where people had no idea what they were doing.

I should reinstall that game though, I liked getting a bounty then hopping in a minisub and taunting the other players >_>

The new one (casino) is worse. We were supposed to be doing the stealth mode the one night I tried joining people and it took 5-10 tries just to get halfway through it. Then once we got close to our objective somebody quit (or got disconnected) mid heist.

Either way the last time I joined an open session I was shocked that it was fairly peaceful. I don't think I even saw people going after others with a bounty on their head. Then again every open session after that was a constant stream of 'X killed Y' notifications scrolling up my screen. lol

Also the game is slower than I expected and feels really similar to the third one disappointingly enough.

If you ever played Jaws Unleashed on PS2 or XBox back in the day I'd definitely suggest trying out Maneater. You play as a bull shark and have to go around eating people and other animals. It's actually an RPG and leveling up and mutating your shark to get it armor for its body is definitely recommended.

You're quite welcome. I definitely recommend leveling up a bunch though before trying to take on enemies above your level at first. I got absolutely trounced early on in the game by alligators. Now, outside of the apex sub bosses I decimate pretty much everything that comes at me.

The game world is fairly large and pretty detailed. I'm pretty sure they even included a defunct/shut down amusement park like Six Flags in New Orleans in the swamp/bayou area of the game. Not to mention there's shipwrecks you can swim around in (and find collectibles in).

That sounds awesome; I really didn't expect them to have such a diverse amount of scenery.

Doing some early morning Sniper Elite 4, restarted the first mission on the Authentic difficulty which is hard as hell and my accuracy is probably going to be like 1% but it's fun >_>

That is the weirdest timing for an auto-save.

I had a similar issue with God Of War Ascension last gen, though I think it was my fault as I saved right before a spot where I kept dying upon respawn. Unfortunately I believe the auto save was in just about the same spot.

That's really unfortunate :|

I've never had such bad luck outside of one other game, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, on that haunted island level. There was this big gap with a rope you had to jump and grab on to and I kept screwing it up and hitting "load" but one time I hit "save" instead and overwrote my one save game... every time I loaded after that it was just Lara screaming and a sickening thud.
