Metal Gear Solid Tekken 3 Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back The first three games are in my humble opinion completely non-negotiable. Yes I fully hold the opinion Tekken is almost as obligatory on a PS1 rushmore as FF7 and MGS1 are. It is really hard to overstate how huge Tekken 3 was back then - even today Tekken doesn't feel as big as it did in the late PS1/early PS2 era in my opinion. The fourth game is pretty flexible (some would say third and fourth since I doubt most people here feel as strongly about Tekken being here as I do), since there's so damn many important PS1 games. But I like Crash 2 in the last slot. It offers something "different" from the other games on the rushmore and it's the series that put Naughty Dog on the map. Crash 1 feels more like a Mega Man 1 thing: important, yes, but Crash 2 is the one people really remember and love. It sold more at least. I do not normally make biased inclusions for rushmores but I am making an exception for Crash 2. The reason I think RE1 > RE2, despite the latter being the better game and arguably more famous, is not only did it coin the name for an entire genre, but RE1 was HUGELY instrumental in carrying early sales of the PS1 and indeed even CD-based games as a whole.

Metal Gear Solid Gran Turismo 2 Crash Bandicoot 2 First two obviously defined the console and the focus on plot and characters in PS1 games. GT2 was the iconic "simulator" racer of the era, a big step up from the original, sold extremely well and established a different vibe, focusing on high end visual/audio production. Crash 2 was the big first party leap into 3D platforming, which was a bigger part of the PS1 than tends to be remembered (Crash and Spyro were both big). Racers and platformers are a lot less important today than they were then. I was considering RE and RE2 (an exceptional game) for the 4th spot though, but RE never felt as huge as Crash during the era - it exploded among my friends with RE4. It feels wrong not to have Tomb Raider, Lara is easily associated with the console, but I have trouble including cause it was multiplat, even though the PS1 release was perhaps the most popular.

Even Symphony of the Night got a Saturn port. Obviously that goes for Tomb Raider too.

Sure, but Tomb Raider was released almost simultaneously on the PS1/PC/SAT (RE1 in the SAT was a year late, and so was SotN... in Japan), and not only that, but I consider the PC version to be easily the best.
