Final Fantasy 7
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider
Tony Hawk Pro Skater

Feel like this is right, in the moment. Yes Tomb Raider doesn't matter NOW but it was a big deal back then if no other reason than Lara Croft

Resident Evil
Crash Bandicoot

Remove: Crash Bandicoot
Add: Tomb Raider

There wasn't too much that SotN added to the genre that Super Metroid hadn't already before. Even as a 2D game, fighting games were holding up that legacy higher.

Last finished: Activision Anthology (PS2) (Patches+Unlockables): Barnstorming, Chopper Command, Stampede, Grand Prix, Megamania, Pitfall!, River Raid.

I always associate Tomb Raider with PC but I guess that's probably just because we had it on PC. Actually it might have only been a demo that we got with something else. Then again we also had FF7 on PC and I associate that with the PS1 so who knows

I get why people are putting SotN up there, as a game it's incredibly solid and has an important place in the development of a genre, but I also think people are forgetting just how poorly it did at the time and glossing over some of the negative coverage it got for being a 2D PSX game. It stands tall in its field but really doesn't have much relevance to the console to me.
It sold well enough to become a Greatest Hits title. It wasn't something no one played.

Yeah, it didn't bomb, but the Greatest Hits bar wasn't crazy high - reportedly the threshold in 1997, when SotN first came out, was 150,000 units sold. I see claims that the game actually struggled to hit that mark and was given a green label rerelease despite this, but I can't find the source for those claims.

I feel the complete opposite. The fun thing here is that it gives discussion and isn't just yet another popularity content. I mean, those are fine, but we have had them.

I'll use personal preference as a tiebreaker.

Tomb Raider is definitely a worthy consideration, but it's not as good as the other games. Actually Crash 1 isn't that good either but I see it as representative of the series, which actually has good games.

Saying Tomb Raider as a series has no good games is super wild to me tbqh

Last Revelation absolutely holds up to this day, the new TR trilogy are all quite good, the first reboot series also had multiple excellent games

People just kinda forget TR is like, a HUGE franchise for a reason and it's not just 'oh, it had Lara'. If the games were not well liked it wouldn't sell as much as it does to this day!

i think people should be free to vote on preference alone, but i do find the discussion on somewhat objective terms to be more interesting. i can see the argument for SOTN being a lot more influential these days than TR, for example, but i disagree with it.

Final Fantasy VII
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil

FF7 and MGS1 are locks, Tomb Raider was a big enough deal that I don't think I can not put it on this list. The problem here is that fourth game. RE1, Gran Turismo 2 (Not 1, 2), Tekken 3, and Crash Bandicoot. My gut says RE1 because that game caused the genre to blow up.

I would concede Tomb Raider has improved since the PS1 days from what I've gathered and dabbled in. I just did not care for the series when they were in the peak of its mainstream zeitgeist.

Also, just to make sure it gets mentioned: Oddworld deserves a quick nod. Not placing it in my vote, but that was a very PS1-game that also had some degree of face-of-the-system to it.

PS1 era Tomb Raiders were the gameplay sequels of classic Prince of Persia, another iconic franchise. It was the other side of the 3D platforming evolution opposite of Mario 64, with more realistic physics and AA leaning. I actually think it was its best moment cause exploration and careful strategies on how to actually get to hard to reach places was huge. Later on it became press A to get to point B.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII
Suikoden II

Had a hard time deciding on a fourth so I went with a personal favorite. Crash Bandicoot 1 is a little rough compared to the following 2 sequels, so it didn't feel right having that as a representative.

Three of the top 11 best selling PSX games were Crash games, and the sequels both outsold the first game. It was the platformer on the system and Sony's first attempt at a North American mascot, moreso than Spyro ever managed.

Like, I'm not trying to argue that popularity equals quality, I was never crazy about these games, but it's really surprising to see people claiming these games weren't a huge deal. 20 years of mediocre sequels has taken its toll, I guess, but in the context of the PSX it's got a big position and it was the launch point for the long line of assorted mascot platformers Sony had for the first ten years of their gaming life.

Final Fantasy VII
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil

This feels surprisingly clear-cut to me. Gran Turismo 2 is the only one that I could be convinced deserves a place. Crash Bandicoot was just the PS1 playing catch-up. Imagine you go see the N64 Rushmore with SM64 there, then you turn around and see Crash Bandicoot in the PS1 exhibit. The PS1 deserves better.
