What album should we cover for Raetsel_Lapin's week?

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, December 18 at 8:00 AM EST - though I have recently been leaving them up for longer, so just try to vote by that afternoon
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.

As usual, the previous topic will be open for another day or so in case anyone still wants to vote

Here is Raetsel_Lapin on the picks this week:

"Common sense has prevailed this time and I've refrained from picking anything that would be considered truly outlandish. We have:

One of the more accessible albums by my current favorite band, which I know has fans on this board because I only learned about them from here.

A sentimental favorite of mine that no one else would be interested in, -but- is relatively harmless. It's just some 80's pop music about love performed by a musical legend. I was going to nominate Barbra Streisand's soundtrack to Yentl in this place, but I backed down at the last minute & went with something that would at least be grudgingly tolerated if it somehow won.

And the best selling album of all time which will assuredly win by default.

BRING ME THE HORIZON - THAT'S THE SPIRIT

Length: 11 songs, 45 minutes
Genre: Nu Metal/Post Metal/Alternative Rock
Year: 2015

The album where BMtH completely abandoned their metalcore roots in favor of a much more mainstream sound, actually transitioning away from metal entirely on some tracks. This resulted in their best-selling album & what is likely the best choice for this topic. While they maintain their anger & lyrics dealing with depression, it's all packaged in tracks that are fairly easy to listen to considering the subject matter.

Favorite Song - Doomed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Oc0ja19_GU

While not my favorite version of the song (the "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" version is basically the best song ever), I listened to versions of this song over 80 times last year. ...Granted, 70+ of those were said live version, but this one also got a lot of play. A good version of my current favorite song & a perfect introduction to the album's themes and style.

Least Favorite - Drown:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEaaqnXqhYw

The lyrics are fine, but I've just never really clicked with the song and find anything it does to be performed better elsewhere on the album.

DOLLY PARTON - REAL LOVE

Length: 10 songs, 35 minutes
Genre: 80's Pop with some country flair
Year: 1985

From that point in the 80's where Dolly was trying to become a pop star, this is easily her at her poppiest. And I know it is blasphemy to pick a non-country album for Dolly, -but- this is an album with personal significance to me. We didn't have many albums growing up and one of the few we did have was a compilation album featuring the best songs from this album. The songs are drilled into my heart & I love this. Objectively, I should nominate Jolene & maybe I will some other day. But I want to use one slot on an album that means a lot to me personally & this is the most tolerable selection from the personal favorite category. It's just 80's pop songs about love. That's it.

Favorite Song - It's Such A Heartache:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV6sRVxwh3E

Pop break-up song. I love it.

Least Favorite - I Can't Be True:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3xjEhPng30

An overly happy ode to cheating that Dolly cannot pull off. She's so sweet that even trying to perform this song is farcical and it's not good enough that anyone could salvage it. It is the only song from the album that I'd call bad.

MICHAEL JACKSON - THRILLER:

Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T., The Girl Is Mine, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'... it's a stacked album and you don't need me to hype it up. Consider this a freebie while I survey people's response to BMtH & Dolly.

Favorite Song - Beat It:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRdxUFDoQe0

...Oh come on, you already know this song.

Least Favorite - The Lady in My Life:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJLH5yXoqi8

After a barrage of hit singles, we end with this song which isn't *bad* but is completely outclassed to a point that it feels like a very unsatisfying conclusion."

First listen down. All I've listened to from Lauper is an Essential compilation that has the first six of these songs. Worth noting is that though the album is called She's So Unusual, there really isn't much "unusual" about this (it's standard 80s fare) or about Lauper herself by modern standards - but her eccentricities were foundational, pushing the envelope in the direction that would later give us the likes of Lady Gaga and P!nk, among many others. Her self-expression makes this album quite engaging, especially the four huge singles.

Will do another listen later in the week - I think two is all I'll need here.

Now I need to figure out how to handle tiebreakers for the competitive rounds. What I want to do is have the rare tie simply mean both albums get covered, but that would mean occasionally pushing the schedule back.

Just flip a coin. Simple.

If you make it so that ties mean ranking both then people could/will game their vote to make that happen.

Well, obviously I like 80's pop, so it's no surprise that I like this album. It's very front-loaded, with not much of an interest towards the end of the album, but it has enough big hits that that isn't too much of a drawback.

He's So Unusual: I don't see the point of this track. I have nothing against a cover of music from the 1920s, but why is it reduced to only 45 seconds in length & in such low quality that it's barely audible? It's not even a good intro to the next song, so I just don't even get why this is here.

Yeah, after two listens, I have to agree here. This is such a weird, unnecessary pace-changer that sticks out like a sore thumb. Yes, I like changes of pace, but they need to flow right. This does not. The album already had both upbeat pop and rock ballads, so it didn't need something like this anyway.

If you're going to cover a song from the 1920s, it's a bad idea to make it sound like it's from the 1920s. Take a cue from Led Zeppelin doing "When the Levee Breaks" and completely transform it into your own thing instead of utilizing intentionally bad audio.

I generally agree with this - certainly, I'd say its music tends to fit firmly within a specific mainstream mold, though distinguished by Lauper's voice. However, I do think the lyrics of many of these songs went hand-in-hand with Lauper's persona to cement her solo debut as, indeed, so unusual relative to what was radio-friendly in 1983.

One the best 80s albums!

All Through The Night - They took a decent 70s singer/songwriter tune and turned into an 80s hit. My favorite song on the album.

Time After Time - While I might prefer All Through The Night, I have to admit that Time After Time has gotta be her biggest song, perhaps her best song, and one of the essential songs of the 80s, if not all time!

Money Changes Everything - I think the original version is actually fine, though a super flat production (especially compared to Lauper's version). Great opening track.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun - A great cover of a song with a perspective shift.

She Bop - I was way too young to realize that this song was about. Catchy tune and a terrific side b opener.

When You Were Mine - this version slays Prince's original

I'll Kiss You

Yeah Yeah - I like the production a bit better here than the original but I guess I feel like there's a better version that hasn't been recorded.

He's So Unusual - Heavy thematic ties for the album and a cheeky lead-in to Yeah Yeah but as a standalone track it can't compare to most of the other tracks

Witness - I just don't get into this one

I wasn't aware this was a cover. I have a hard time imagining the song performed by a male singer because Cyndi's version plays with gender & sexuality in a way that made this one of my favorite songs on the album. The song would hardly be as enjoyable without those aspects; much like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", it's remarkable how Cyndi completely redefines the track.

(Apologies if this double posts, site is freezing up whenever I try to post at the moment)

I just assume all polls like these are controlled by the Stuffer--who I choose to believe is one lurker dedicated to the total domination of all anonymous polling on the board.

....though apparently the last poll only had 16 votes in total, so this may be a new development. That or this is the first time the vote difference was severe enough that they had to cast more votes than usual to swing it. (And since things are currently tied, they may ont even be accomplishing whatever their goal was anyway).

Good - though uneven - album. The filler tracks toward the back don't work as well as the big singles, and feel like they're from a different album entirely given how they have male backing vocals galore that are absent from the front six. Only one song is particularly terrible, the hugely out-of-place kinda/sorta "title track" that's a cover of a 1920s song that feels like it was recorded in the 1920s. This serves no purpose whatsoever. Like I said before, if you're gonna cover an old song, make it sound new. Those last four songs really make me see no reason to deviate from a compilation - it seems like Lauper's album tracks tend to leave something to be desired. This is still a hugely influential album that deserved to be, but it's carried by the might of her singles, songs that have withstood the test of time despite sounding "definitively 80s" at this point.

  1. All Through the Night - I've always had a soft spot for this one. It's so magical to listen to. This is really what love is about: Getting through the darkness together.
  2. Time After Time - This is her signature ballad for a reason. It serves as good contrast to the more upbeat tracks and... damn does it hit hard. I need someone like she has in this song, given how people let me down again and again and again.
  3. Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Lauper's signature song (even though it was a cover), and what should've been track 1. It's a fun, attention-grabbing romp, with infectious musical energy and a strong underlying message combating misogyny. Equal opportunity to party, everybody!
  4. When You Were Mine - Originally a Beatlesesque tune written and performed by Prince, Lauper's version is catchy. And her playing with it makes it something else.
  5. She Bop - Forget the simple, silly lyrics, it's all about that killer beat.
  6. I'll Kiss You - Pretty much a mixture of the best of "Money Changes Everything" and "Witness" - the songs below it. It's higher than either of them because it is.
  7. Money Changes Everything - Kind of a blah opener tbh, and it goes on redundantly for a little too long.
  8. Yeah Yeah - Yeah, yeah...
  9. Witness - Yay album track filler!
  10. He's So Unusual - This attempt at pre-pop music feels very out of place. I get that it's supposed to, but this was never a good idea. If you're going to record a song from before the Hot 100, don't make it sound like it's from before there was serious recording equipment.

tbh this might be the best idea. That way the people most involved in ranking get the power, instead of anonymous outsiders coming in to vote for the poll but never participating. Wouldn't surprise me if they picked things to mess with us sometimes. That might be why Mariah's album got more votes than I expected in the Christmas album poll given the audience here, though Lindsey still won (like I predicted, because as I said, she's "nerd culture's favorite violinist" by virtue of being one of us [and cute]).

Also, the plan is to just have the three albums but not ID who nominated what in the next poll, right? We want people voting for albums as opposed to users, after all.

Ehh, I think I'd like people to be able to hype up their album choices & say why they picked them. Forced silence feels incredibly un-fun... and considering how unique each person's posting styles are, you'd have to force an absolute "no talking about the nominations at all" to even try forcing anonymity.

I dont think any of the regular rankers would not vote for an album because of who nominated it.

If/when we go to non-anonymous voting, I think anyone should be able to vote. But maybe give someone who ranks an extra voteor half voteso that people who are invested get a little more sway.

Such an incredible album. It is absolutely pure 80s tripple distilled and 10 times filtered - the hard stuff. There is not a single song on this album I don't like, not even the quirky little "He's So Unusual." When a song that slaps as hard as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" can still be topped by so many songs you know you're listening to pure gold.

2 All Through the Night
3 She Bop - Ain't no law against it yet ;p
4 When You Were Mine

So, imo, I think anonymous voting is still overall a good thing. There are probably a couple of lurkers that just don't want to participate but do want see what others have to say about the music they like. If such people are out there, I wouldn't want them to feel excluded.

However, what has happened to this week's poll seems to be pretty obvious vote stuffing. When all of the regular voters had their say there was one very clear winner. Now somehow an entry with very few votes has moved up to first and the vote count is above norm? Yeah, that's obvious cheating. I absolutely would do that album if it won fair and square, but if we take this result as-is I'm dipping out that week in protest.

I think we can use common sense reason here in order to determine which album won fair and square. Hopefully that will be enough to tell the stuffer that they are wasting their time. If we have to change things up, though, then we have to change things up.

Oh yeah, I did listen to this a few days ago, still need to do my ranking.

Well, I guess this can't even be my favorite "boundary-pushing female vocal pop album of 1983" then.
I have an idea why you'd say that, but would rather hear it from you than assume.

Also, despite the exact release date of the album, it was 1984 that Cyndi absolutely dominated (as in #1 artist overall, gender be damned)

All Through The Night
Time After Time
Girls Just Want To Have Fun
She Bop
Money Changes Everything
Yeah Yeah
Witness
I'll Kiss You
When You Were Mine
He's So Unusual

Another top heavy album, and I feel like most pop albums we've ranked have followed this trend, although technically a song on the bottom side ends up taking my top spot, and pretty easily too.

General Album Comments

Seanchan: I think Im going to need to see a doctor from the genre whiplash this album gave me. This is gonna be one of those albums where every song is in someones top 5 and someone elses bottom 5.

Not an unenjoyable listen but one that will definitely need more listens to digest.

the first song was like okay alright. Then the next is a complete tonal shift and its like okay one of THOSE albums. Then there was some stuff I was a little eh on. Then one that is COMPLETELY different than the songs around it and Im like the fuck!?!

In reading their bio on Spotify this kind of seems like its their thing to be all over the map and not be pigeon holed.

jcgamer107: Imo Ween's best album from start to finish. I would put the opening 3 tracks up against the first 3 tracks of any other album. If you don't like the style of the current song....just wait till the next one.

BlueCrystalTear: First impression: A rare example of an album that has numerous stylistic shifts that isn't jarring so much as shocking how it can be pulled off. It's awesome in how it can shift yet still sound like a cohesive whole; for an extremely different reason than Green Day, the sequencing matters quite a lot, and a different order might've felt disjointed.

Johnbobb: the first Ween album I listened to took at least like 4 listens to even know if I actually liked it. This one is similarly all over the place, but I think it's actually a little more comprehensible than that one was, with at least some stylistic similarities song-to-song, and just so many killer tracks along the way. They're so bizarre but I also really dig them, and Ween might be slowly squeezing its way into being one of my favorite bands

neonreaper: I enjoyed this album. It's super quirky and dynamic, while having strengths that they go back to. The melancholy and introspective tracks stand out to me, as well as the atmospheric tracks. And the 'strange' songs keep things lively. After the first few songs in my ranking, I have a handful that I enjoyed more than the others. That said, I could see much of this list shuffling around based on mood.

BlueCrystalTear: This album honestly feels like it took songs from four different projects and wove them together in the order they fit the best. On a song-by-song basis, it's quite strong, with only four and a half songs I'd consider not my jam for either being way too sleepy or like murder on my ears.

Seanchan: There's a lot to like here, despite (or perhaps because of?) how manic it is with the genre changes. With that said, this isn't an album that's strong front to back. There's a tier of songs I like (my ranked 1-6), another tier I'm okay on (my ranked 7-10/11), and then the not so good ones (10/11-15).

HBJDubs: Pretty evenly split here between songs I like and songs I don't.

Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb, hotdogturtle (#15)

jcgamer107: Is it fucked? Yes. But is it a jam? Yes.

Johnbobb: I got frustrated listening to this because my spotify when hooked up to my car sometimes randomly pauses itself or skips and I couldn't tell if that was happening or if that was part of the song

BlueCrystalTear: Is this thing working? That's the point, I get it, but it's still weird.

hotdogturtle: I would like this song if it had any more substance. But as of right now it's basically nothing at all. With just a bit more I could see this being like my #3 or something.

14. Captain (Track #9)
Score: 56 (Average Rank: 10.91/15)

Biggest Detractor(s): Raetsel_Lapin, jcgamer107, FoolFantastic, Seanchan (#15)

jcgamer107: The only forgettable track on the album

BlueCrystalTear: Forgettable filler that goes on too long. A worse version of "Captain."

Biggest Fan(s): HBJDubs (#4)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb, Seanchan (#13)

jcgamer107: Really cool soundscape here, especially in the bridge

BlueCrystalTear: The first amazingly atmospheric song on the album, and for good reason since it's the best of them.

10. So Many People in the Neighborhood (Track #5)
Score: 86 (Average Rank: 8.91/15)
Biggest Fan(s): Johnbobb (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): BlueCrystalTear, HBJDubs (#15)

jcgamer107: Paranoia in musical form

Johnbobb: I cannot explain why I love this song as much as I do

BlueCrystalTear: This is awful. Just awful. Sorry, Johnbobb. It feels like I'm taking acid and puking my guts out... it's also just six words long.

hotdogturtle: I can see why some people wouldn't like this song (especially in the lyrics department), but if you give me a song that sounds like this on a mostly rock(?) album, of course I'm gonna like it.

9. Chocolate Town (Track #10)
Score: 91 (Average Rank: 7.91/15)
Biggest Fan(s): BlueCrystalTear (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): hotdogturtle (#13)

jcgamer107: So soothing, a 10/10 song for summer driving with the windows down

BlueCrystalTear: Hard to believe this country-rock song is on the same album as some of the others!

8. Zoloft (Track #2)
Score: 95 (Average Rank: 7.36/15)
Biggest Fan(s): MetalmindStats (#4)
Biggest Detractor(s): HBJDubs (#13)

jcgamer107: A little hypocritical, since, for a long time, Gene and Dean had no problem with recreational drugs lol. Still, it's a good song - definitely captures the 'uncomfortably numb' feeling some psych meds can give you. Gimme that P-R-O-Z-A-C.

BlueCrystalTear: Would be higher if not for the weird sound effects that distract me too much.

7. If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All) (Track #15)
Score: 101 (Average Rank: 7.45/15)
Biggest Fan(s): HBJDubs (#1)

5. It's Gonna Be a Long Night (Track #1)
Score: 107 (Average Rank: 7/15)
Biggest Fan(s): Seanchan (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): MetalmindStats (#15)

jcgamer107: This is how you start an album. I want this played at my funeral.... because I will instantly revive and start partying. A great tribute to Motorhead-type bands.

4. The Argus (Track #14)
Score: 107 (Average Rank: 6.36/15)
Biggest Fan(s): HBJDubs (#3)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb (#10)

jcgamer107: To me this is like 'The Mollusk' 2.0 - another track that sounds like a folk song about some ancient mythical creature

BlueCrystalTear: Something about this one feels familiar for whatever reason.

3. Happy Colored Marbles (Track #7)
Score: 112 (Average Rank: 6.64/15)
Biggest Fan(s): Raetsel_Lapin, hotdogturtle (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): MarkS2222222222 (#12)

jcgamer107: Love how it goes from weird psychedelic sound to an explosion of insane energy 2 minutes in

BlueCrystalTear: First half is catchy as can be. The last minute is like somebody dropped a nuclear bomb on it, and this ruins the song.

jcgamer (responding to BCT): this is a good description but I view it as a positive

2. Tried and True (Track #6)
Score: 144 (Average Rank: 4.27/15)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, MarkS2222222222, MetalmindStats (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Seanchan (#8)

jcgamer107: Very nice acoustic guitar

BlueCrystalTear: A nice acoustic pace-changer. I like those better than the others.

1. Transdermal Celebration (Track #3)
Score: 146 (Average Rank: 4.09/15)
Biggest Fan(s): jcgamer107, BlueCrystalTear (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): HBJDubs (#10)

jcgamer107: It's hard to describe how I felt the first time I heard the guitar solo. It was an overwhelming, spiritual experience, like God reaching down from heaven to take my hand and tell me everything's going to be okay. My 3rd eye was opened and I think I almost cried.

BlueCrystalTear: This is just a banger.

Can we just cut my week entirely? Disqualify everything and either have the "BlueCrystalTear/darkx/neonreaper" week moved up by one to fill in or just take an official week off for the holidays? I don't want to deal with this and I don't want the host to deal with it either. Not quitting or removing myself from future cycles, but I think cutting the week entirely is the fairest and happiest solution remaining.

That doesn't solve the problem because the same thing could just happen next week or any other week. It's an issue that needs to be discussed ASAP.

I imagine we just switch to public voting in the future as was discussed a few times. It's the only real choice; either anonymity is sacred enough that it's worth opening the door to bad faith actors or we need some level of accountability to prevent one person controlling everything. I personally have no qualms posting my votes publicly & that seems the fairest option.

I just think this week's polling is sufficiently shot that I'd rather not redo it, nor do I wish to play a game of "guess which spike of 12 votes was the most illegitimate" because while I'll concede that it's probable Thriller has more legitimate votes I don't think there's enough evidence. This is a fun topic series and this week has been derailed in very un-fun ways and I'd very much like to move on completely.

So I must say, I'm pretty happy to see the way people have responded to this album overall. I actually considered putting All Through the Night as my number 1 as few of you have. I somehow had l this notion in my mind that I was the only one who loved that song as much as I do.

I also agree to a point about He's So Unusual. It is easily the weakest track on the album. I don't think it's unnecessary, though. I actually think keeping it at that quality helps accentuate the sort of Betty Boop kind of quality that Cyndi has, though it might have been better as a "secret track" after the rest of the album had finished.

I hate to be the downer here, but I just didn't click with this album. It's not terrible or anything, I just...I dunno, I guess I just didn't get it.

It somewhat bizarrely feels too long to me, despite only being 10 songs and 38.5 minutes. There were quite a few songs where I love the intro and the first 30 seconds, then that fades and I look and there's still another 45 seconds of the song left. There's always a lot of repetition in pop music but it just grated on me here. Part of me wonders if this album was stretched out at all to hit some sort of minimum length.

Money Changes Everything - I think they ran out of ideas half way through and just added a few more choruses to extend the song.

I've heard some of these songs before, but until this topic I didn't realize that 50% of the album was cover songs.

As much as I love this album, I don't necessarily disagree with this critique - but usually I feel that the extra time lends the songs in question a certain improvisational, almost freeform quality that I appreciate.

On that note, and somewhat ironically given its extensive employment of synths placing it firmly in the 80s pop sphere, She's So Unusual never once feels manufactured to me. Lauper (who landed several solo record deal offers for her voice in her Blue Angel days) naturally sings her own case here by letting her nerves and rawness show at times. But this is an album that lives up to its characteristically striking cover-art all around, from its typically well-written and at times even quietly revolutionary lyrics to soundscapes that reward exploration in unexpected ways.

Time After Time: Force me to name a favorite song over and over again, and chances are you have my continual choice right here, time after time if you will. I don't feel I could really do justice to all the reasons why, in fact.

All Through the Night: In Lauper's hands, it feels like it's (fairly autobiographically) about being young and having dreams and wanting to reach for them together with another, a theme which Lauper illuminates with astonishing earnestness, sans a hint of sentimentality. That helps make for my favorite ever vocal performance, and also my single favorite song to sing along to.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun: Its infusions of motown and reggae influences help musically outline the inclusively feminist point that its famous video pictorially reinforced - and, of course, there's Lauper's sheer exuberance and enthusiasm in serving up her message. There's no song I personally prefer dancing to, and nothing I'd rather have taken up as my topmost anthem of self-expression.

When You Were Mine: Raetsel's comment covers pretty much everything I would have mentioned.

She Bop: Oddly enough, its subject matter wasn't actually originally Lauper's idea. However, her teasing, playful vocal manner stands as proof positive of how she latched onto its perspective to make for the most purely anarchic fun here.

Money Changes Everything: This jaunty, melodica-enlivened opener really showcases the sheer range of Lauper's influences, from Elvis Presley to Billie Holiday (on her vocals) and The Police to R&B in general (on the music) - and also the way she turns them into something new.

Witness: Laupers performance brings an on-point combination of uneasy emotion and exuberant energy to bear, powering what could have been a throwaway album track and belying its somewhat happenstance inspiration.

Yeah Yeah: I have a persistent soft spot for this off-kilter closer, which feels like its the result of everyone Lauper worked with asking her to include a duet, to which she agreed - in characteristic fashion. The results: a classically early 80s synthesized-sounding male vocal deliberately contrasted with an always-alive star in the making.

I'll Kiss You: Catchy and generally fun, but trying for soulful synth made its music so aggressively stereotypically 80s even I can tell, and its lyrics have aged poorly in more ways than one.
