Auto on Y for Youngbuck for now. I can't see it going much further.

Darn, thought C is for Capital Punishment had a real shot at Top 5. I know it's not as safe as the obvious winner of this whole thing--A is for Amateur, but I thought it had a good chance still. Maybe it was too bloody.

Gimmie dat Invincible cash!

There seems to be a happy medium here. Stuff that is too "safe" doesn't do too well here either. I'm thinking of stuff like Conjuring in our 2010's horror list. That was like straight horror movie that came with the picture frame and it wound up as 20 or something. And a lot of the really straight forward, predictable ones in ABCs have dropped already too.

Like, I liked C is for Capital Punishment well enough. It was "fine". It just didn't really do anything special for me and it was one of those like N is for Nexus that I thought was super straight forward

This was nice. Good for the mother for standing up for her daughter, even if murder is a bit much. I also like the use of lag to add creepiness and anticipation. The acting and script are great all around too.

tomnook
Good found footage short. Cheaters receiving justice. And a fully nude female killer is a win.

Inviso
This is an interesting found footage movie, because its definitely creepy, and you get your staple dickhead who treats everything like a joke (and is subsequently murdered), and it manages to get the whole money shot in, in just a short amount of time. Its a little weird that a guy would Facetime his girlfriend after fucking a mother/daughter prostitute duo, but hey, it gets the plot going. At least Dylan goes first.

Suprak
I had kind of a hard time ranking this one. The ending is creepy enough, but it sort of caps out at a certain because I was hoping the two douche bags would die anyway. The womans screams on the other end of the phone are solid and the way the old woman looks into the camera at the end is genuinely unsettling. Her sneaking up on douchebag 1 is great and this is another short that plays with the powerlessness of seeing something terrible happening but not being able to help. Im not usually a fan of found footage horror like this, but it sort of works here because of how short it is. You get the introduction, the build up, and then the scare all in a couple of minutes and you dont have to deal with all that boring padding where nothing happens in the middle like most found footage films. Another one in the second film I thought did a pretty good job at packing a quick little punch and then getting out of the way.

jcgamer
It was good

John
this basically feels like a shorter, kinda dumber version of one of the V/H/S shorts, which are already kinda dumber and shorter than real horror movies

Snake
Meh - guy is an asshole, gets killed, someone on the other side of the phone panics, its whatever

plasma
Hahahah! Was this one cut from V/H/S? It was clumsy, ridiculous, and melodramaticso bad that I burst out laughing anytime someone got attacked. And you gotta love that the phone-camera catches everything at convenient angles. Way to commit to realism. F

This is one of the few shorts in the first movie I genuinely like. Adam Wingard probably shouldnt act again, but the whole thing is a pretty funny meta-commentary on the project itself. I wonder how many of the other directors on here were like hey what the hell when fake Adam Wingards hacky attempt at the start of the project was to just show a topless girl screaming because I feel like ten people here are guilty of some variation of just that. I think this whole segment is pretty funny from start to finish, and I laughed way harder than I shouldve at that ending shot of the sound guy sprinting off into the dessert carrying his boom mic. Even the Q is for Quack is a clever double meaning. Poor Nacho Vigalando was out here catching strays too. Fun idea, great execution, pretty easily the best short of the first movie for me.

Karo
A funny and very meta segment starring the two directors, who in an attempt to slaughter a duck for their film end up both accidentally shooting each other.

Inviso
Good meta-humor and generally realized how dumb it was. My one complaint is that I imagine X is gonna be the hardest letter to properly film, not Q.

Snake
Some WAY too obvious meta-humor here but I kinda give it more credit because its Wingard and Barrett

Raka
Ah yes, the self-aware one. Like "The ABC's of Deaths That Goes Wrong". It's actually pretty funny, even if it got predictable towards the end, and the duck IS cute. Not bad.

jcgamer
Heh heh. Decent meta silliness

tomnook
Wow, so ebic and meta.

plasma
None of this is working.
This is a fucking disaster.
Guys, are you talking about your short film or the entire back half of ABCs #1?
Either way, this one sucked. I expected it to be Q Is For (Scream) Queen based on the well-endowed coke goddess we met early on, but she turned out to be a red herring. Perhaps Adam Wingard shouldve explored the Scream Queen trope in fun, experimental ways, but noooooohed rather make an uninspired meta comedy about a duck and two quacks. D

John
Perhaps the most successful of any of the directors to participate in an ABCs of Death, and this is the best they come up with? A meta piece about not having a better idea where basically nothing happens?

holy shit a play on words that's actually kinda clever! super tarantino/rodriguez inspired and I dig it

Suprak
I like this one, unironically. The set up is a really fun play on all those 70s exploitation movies and I wouldnt have minded it if it was just that. The twist here actually caught me off guard and this is one of the few it was all just a dream! tropes I dont hate. That sort of fun fantasy wasteland immediately contrasted with the brutal dark reality of their situation made the shift even more effective. The acting and camerawork arent perfect, but I still thought this one was pretty solid and does a good job doing something interesting within the constraints of the project.

plasma
What a twist! This one opens with a kickass goth babe stuffing a hostage into her vehicles trunk and driving off to escape a hooded stranger. At first this one seems like its gonna be some cheesy Fantasy-Western with bad dialogue and worse acting. Then the twist hits and everything clicks as we see our two gothic leads shooting speedballs in a heroin den. The stark reality of the ending actually makes the entire dream sequence amazing (the melodrama and stiff acting are totally forgivable because the whole thing is in her head), and this short was unquestionably the best one from the back half of ABCs #1. It reminds me of M Is For Masticate, but the ending is considerably more impactful. A-

Karo
is this the sequel to faster pussycat kill kill

Snake
What if Quentin Tarantino but ACTUALLY a drug induced hallucination

Inviso
The acting is absolutely terrible, without a doubt. But at least its bad acting in service of an interesting story and a solid twist ending. If youre gonna have bad acting, sometimes a metaphor is the way to go.

jcgamer
Not bad, decent twist/metaphor

Tom
It's got the little twist, but I also don't care.

Raka
Man, that's some horrible acting and bad editing. It fels very much like a self-aware exploitation film. And the ending kinda justifies it. Don't do drugs, kids!

This was very well-shot, with some creative and beautiful shots. The premise is simple yet interesting, and I didn't expect real world geopolitics to play into it but it makes for some good context.

Suprak
Theres some stuff here I like and some stuff that I dont. The opening shot is pretty good and for a second I was like oh shit they hung Robin Hood! But then it turns out to be an Israeli paratrooper/supermodel. We get another way too long shot of a dudes feet walking up to her which almost felt like they were stalling for time for some reason. I did like the interaction between the two and the back and forth isnt too bad. Im not sure why this two foot drop caused her leg to literally explode. I also feel like guns in the ABCs of Death universe misfire with perfect accuracy if you so much as sneeze on them, so the whole ending was kind of a weird one for me. It was still interesting and well shot for such a simple concept.

Inviso
This one was an interesting story for sure (though its one of the least horror-themed shorts Ive watched thus far). I thought it conveyed emotion rather well, and characterized the two leads strongly in a short amount of time. The ONLY issue I had was that she was stranded liketwo feet off the ground. How the hell do you break your leg THAT quickly?

jcgamer
Interesting spin on a Brer Rabbit-type story with one character trying to outsmart the other

Karo
A downed israeli pilot is captured by an arab youth who is so inept at soldiering that he sets a valuable enemy prisoner free and manages to shoot himself with his own rifle. Should have called it f is for failing.

Plasma
This one started with some clever camerawork. Right off the bat, we see feet hanging beneath a tree branch, and were led to believe someone got hanged. Then the camera pulls back to reveal a parachute caught in the tree. Nice.
Unfortunately it all falls apart from there, as the story turns into a melodramatic back-and-forth between a female Israeli soldier and an Arab boy with a rifle. The woman questions his masculinity in order to convince him to cut her down from the tree. Then her shin snaps in hilarious fashion, and the boy falls out of the tree in even more hilarious fashion. The stunts in this one were disastrous, and they took me out of the story. But, hey, I laughed. C-

TomNook
The concept is fine, but it felt too rushed in short form.

Snake
Its thin - is it supposed to be some kind of Romeo & Juliet thing? I dont care

John
I kinda dug this up until the ending, where it suddenly doesn't understand how either broken legs work or how guns work. The emotional conversation between the two was great leading up

That was hilarious. "Don't forget DL-6 (FUNNY PRANK)(GONE SEXUAL)". It's also neatly made and the emotional build-up was pretty good until things went south (then it became even better).

Inviso
This one was actually pretty funny. The comedy was well-played and the horror aspect barely mattered. Maybe thats why this was so much more tolerable than some of the others.

Karo
A man uses a trained parrot to propose to his girlfriend, only to find out the bird is a bit too smart. Domestic violence intensifies.

Suprak
I feel like this is almost a Southwest commercial from the mid 2000s. Like after the parrot started making the orgasm noises the dude shouldve mugged into the camera and the scene freeze framed and the voice over guy went Want to get away? I feel like this joke has to have been done before, but I cant lie and say I didnt laugh when the parrot was bopping up and down like crazy at the end. I thought it was funny enough. The blood splashes on the camera at the end feel like they go on for roughly ten seconds too long though.

jcgamer
Hahahahaha fantastic - cute & clever

Snake
The cutest murder-marriage proposal ever

plasma
A charming young fellow buys a parrot and teaches the bird to propose to his girlfriend. Cute and heartwarming stuff. But unfortunately our charming young fellow was dumb enough to have an affair within earshot of the parrot, and the bird happily repeats every audible detail to the girlfriend.
I wanted to love this one, but it felt rushed and the boyfriend having an off-screen affair seemed like a low-hanging fruit to me. Why not pick something more creative than him cheating on his girlfriend the night before he proposes? Cmon now. C-

A silly scenario, but the comedy tone made the joke instantly stale.

With all the juvenile and toilet humor in these films, surprisingly the one called Toilet doesn't fit into either category. This one is very grim. I love claymation when it comes to violence and surrealism, because you can do some really cool things it. This one does a lot in such a small amount of time.

jcgamer
That was great, and no wonder - Lee Hardcastle is one of the best claymators around

Snake
Classic Robot Chicken/South Park style gross-out violent comedy

Suprak
I checked and apparently the guy who made this tends to do a lot of Claymation work which honestly was not my guess. The Claymation is sort of rough in a sort of hey this is a fun hobby I just took up last week kind of way. But I still think I liked it? It was charming and I liked the take on silly childhood fear turning into what looked like something out of Final Destination when he wakes up. Also the toilet jump scare was the scariest part of the first movie and Ill fight you on that if you disagree. Fun, clever, original, and just a bit scary. Couldnt ask for much more in five minutes.

Karo
A claymation segment featuring a childs potty training gone horribly wrong. The animation at least makes it stand out even if it isnt that great.

plasma
In the English language there are 6,653 words beginning with the letter T, and I guarantee you the director didnt consider any of his 6,652 other options. His brain went straight to Toilet and stuck there as he crafted his death short about the horrors of potty training.
Imagine the directors chagrin when discovered that his animated toilet tale was the second of its kind in the anthology. Imagine his anguish when he realized that the Law of Diminishing Returns would cause audiences to groan as they watched yet another commode chronicle. Imagine MY surprise when I learned that, according to a source-less entry on Wikipedia, T Is For Toilet was chosen as the best short film from ABCs of Death #1.
Best short from ABCs #1? Hell no. The clay-mation is good here, there are some memorable moments, and the ending is amusing, but this one really suffered from being lumped in with several other stories that involved bathrooms. I was burned out on toilets at this point. D+

Inviso
How is Toilet not the only toilet movie on this list? Its gross and the Claymation makes the grossness even worse, but its interesting enough to warrant a spot above some other films on the list.

John
heh stupid kid get rekt

Raka
Great, another toilet-based one. Let's see if this one is grosser than the others. Oh, this one's a literal murderous toilet for a change. It at least utilizes the claymation format quite effectively. But this late to the movie...I'm just not in the mood for it.

I really wish the old guy had gotten killed before he started lapping up sweat, but once I saw his head go through the hoop, I was sold. Good music as well. 2 points.

Wow Tim Dunn literally has the best look for a role like this. Quick, dirty, and nasty approach of a serious subject matter

Tom
The tone is weird, but this one succeeds at being creepy, so I'll give it a win.

Raka
It's pretty well-shot and man that janitor looks disturbing while still looking like a human. I didn't really expect it to be a revenge film, but that was a pretty creative and well-deserved death. ...as a side note, people definitely don't accumulate sweat that much.

Inviso
I mean, this was gross and weird, so kudos on the actor for playing a convincing pedophile? Good job? Still, at least he got what was coming to him after weirdly licking up ass sweat from a bench. It was a satisfying conclusion, thats for damn sure.

Karo
A revenge story where an abused boy decapitates his abuser while wearing the corpse of a deer and then proceeds to fuck the dismembered head and I don't want to watch these anymore please send help

plasma
John Malkovichs stunt-double licks adolescent sweat off a gymnasium bleacher to the beat of 80s synth music while several flashbacks clue us in on backstory Id rather not be privy to. The ending, I will admit, is satisfying when the kid executes John Malkovichs stunt-double by impaling the bastards eye socket with buckhorns. I laughed. D-

Suprak
I dont know what the fuck is up with the music choices in this movie, but this is like the fourth vignette where the director just decided to pump up some public domain piece of garbage soundtrack in the background so they didnt have to worry about writing actual dialogue or doing any work on sound editing. The song itself sounds like something that would play during a training montage in an 80s movie about arm wrestling, and it doesnt fit with what the hell is going on. They at least cast the right guy to play the creepy pervert, and he looks like what would happen is a testicle wished itself to become a man and then became a sex offender. This is another short that just goes for gross out shock value, and they throw pedophilia on top of it to make things even less watchable. You have things like that arrow being shot from five different perspectives to make it look like it was this guys first attempt at filming something and it just sort of looks like it was filmed by a hack. Ripping off a pedophiles head and shooting it through a basketball hoop should be more fun than this.

This is about as good as you can do with this concept while taking it seriously, I feel like. A vignette actually works here and any longer would diminish the idea. You have this good set up where this woman is meeting every rude person you can possibly imagine and then you have the whole ending scene filmed about as brutally as you can imagine. This one was hard to watch, but not just for all the cutting at the end. I found out that if you find someone slurping on food in a certain way, I come very close to gagging which was a new discovery for me. The ending shot where she finally has the body she thinks she wants after cutting away so much of herself is brilliant and is just such an unsettling image by itself. A really good examination of self-loathing and body image and public pressure. Some of the jump cuts get a little discombobulating but I feel like that is kind of the point so Im not going to dock it too much, and this is one of the few shorts in the first film where you can tell the director is actually really talented.

John
probably the most horrified I was at any point in either movie

Snake
Everyones an asshole then oh my god the body horror. Nice and simple with effective results.

Tomnook
Good as a short, and could also be a decent feature length film.

plasma
Easily the grossest film in the entire collection. Watching the woman stuff her face with whatever slop she keeps in her fridge ruined my appetite for about 43 hours. That aside, this short makes great use of body horror to convey the womans self-loathing and image issues. Seeing her step out of the shower all cut-down and bloody was one of the strongest images in any of these shorts. B-

jcgamer
Well that was something. Brutal to watch but a good concept.

Raka
Right off the bat, this one is excellent psychological horror, especially if you have body image issues. The self-mutilation scene is also quite disturbing but not just gory for the sake of it, interpersed with that image of the slim model prancing around. Huh. It worked for a little bit. Good for her.

Karo
This fat lady is made fun of in a bizarre manner like everyone is still in elementary school or internet trolls, and because of this she flays herself alive. It's not very good.

Inviso
This one had an extreme overabundance of gross imagery, from the binging to the cutting, and I just felt bad for the main character, that things were that bad for her. It was largely unpleasant to watch though, even if it told a distinct message.

Something that I was apparently very alone in hating in these movies was anything that looked like hacky poorly made music videos. Theres way too many of them and theyre all terrible imo. Feels so damn lazy to just throw some garbage music on top of what your filming and not worry about any of those difficult things like dialogue or sound editing or anything like that. Still like three more of those left.

XXL is the first one to drop I was hoping might win! I really liked my top four and I thought XXL was great. Reminded me of something you might see in an adult version of Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark.

The eating scene legitimately almost made me nauseous. The body stuff at the end was hard to watch but no where near as bad.

And that's another one of my top 10 gone, thankfully far from the bottom this time. Loved Youngbuck's style, synth score, and satisfyingly gnarly decapitation.

I also notice we have only one letter with both shorts still in play, and I'm proud of you all for making it the top letter.

This is how you do a quick, found footage style horror movie (with some comedy thrown in). Youve got the whole story shown, not told (shooting a nature documentary about how nuclear waste has killed all the badgers), and an unlikable dickhead to be the unseen, mutant badgers only victim. Its just a well-told short, for sure.

Suprak
It is weird how quickly this one makes the first movie feel like a true amateur production. You have competent actors here and a coherent narrative and a little bit of horror and a little bit of humor. You have the good set up with the power plant, the little bit of build up with the boom mic being attacked, and then the jerk comes back and gets his comeuppance in the form of being ripped in half by a mutant badger. The cut at the end made me smile, too.

Raka
A nature mockumentary, love it already. The acting is so good as well, that guy totally had it coming. Also a smart decision not to show the mutant badger instead of using some cheap effect or costume.

John
simple joke, unbearable asshole getting killed violently, not bad

Snake
I liked Julian Barratt in it and the radioactive theme. Not much else to it though.

jcgamer
Very cool surprise to see Julian Barratt

Karo

That was just perfect - the kind of thing that seems obvious but when you see it in execution its like a whole new revelation. Funny and brutally realistic and I like that they show the fantasy movie part of it first to really drive in the point.

Tom
Fun concept, and the ending is the perfect punctuation.

John
I like watching these without knowing the titles going in because everything from the beginning suggests this is A for Assassin, until everything goes horribly, painfully wrong, in neat little twist to start the film

Suprak
Wow what a clever subversion of what you think is going to happen, particularly if youve already watched the first ABCs of Death. It has all the hallmarks of the hackiness of the worst parts of the first movie the weird music video feel, the annoying song playing over everything so they dont need to do any sound editing, weird random nudity. But then it snaps to reality and you have this bumbling idiot impaling himself on nails and getting himself killed by getting stuck and bleeding to death in the vent. Almost feels like a nice little alert that all that dumb stuff from the first compilation isnt going to fly here. The falling out of the vent and shooting the dude in the neck at the very end is kind of dumb, but I still like the concept here because it almost feels like a middle finger to everyone who didnt try the first time around.

plasma
This was the first short film I watched because I initially had trouble getting ABCs #1 to work. What a weird introduction this one was. I couldnt tell what the hell was going on Nude dancers, rich dudes sitting around drinking, some clown crawling through a ventilation shaft like hes Discount John McClane Then Three Weeks Later flashes across the screen and we cut to a daytime scene where Rich Dude complains about the odor in his $6,000-a-month apartment. Then Discount McClane pops out of the ventilation shaft (wouldnt he have died of thirst and/or starvation?) and shoots Rich Dude through the neck. Soon as that happened, the story clicked for me. Nice.
This one loses points for how confusing it is until the end, but the confusion also works in a strange way. The whole three weeks later jump couldve been shortened for realism, but whatever. This was fun. B

Inviso
I loved the concept behind this one. Showing the stylized, Hollywood idea of how an assassin works first, only to have a small vent completely ruin that idea and cause the would-be assassin to get stuck and die was a clever twist. Cleverer was having the assassins corpse fire off the fatal shot and finish the job. A good start to the second film, for sure.

jcgamer
Fine start to #2

Karo
An unremarkable segment featuring the worlds most incompetent assassin who thinks his is cooler than he really is.

Raka
Good morning, Agent 47. Well, this was pretty hilarious but I had to consult the Wiki to learn what really happened. Nevertheless, it's a good opener for the second movie and it's already better than like 60% of the first ones.

One of the few shorts of both films I actively wanted to rewatch when it was over. The only weakness I'd maybe say is that it didn't make total sense why the hitman didn't turn around immediately after at least impaling his hand on the nail if not before that. Like at that point it should've been pretty clear this gimmick wasn't going to work out! But anyway I love everything about it regardless.
