In hindsight, I feel like I ranked Knell too low. It really was a cool concept and well shot, which goes pretty far in these shorts. In the end it was a little too vague for me, with the ending not really drawing me or sticking out as memorable.

So while it was very well made, it also didn't make the best use of the small time it had alotted to really make an impression

Yeah, definitely a fair point. They keep things super vague and I think it works here, but I could see thinking it makes things feel a bit insubstantial. It probably helps I just had rewatched Bird Box for the Horror ranking and this felt like a better interpretation of what that was trying to go for in four minutes than the hour and a half Bird Box had.

I will autopick Masticate next

So I mentioned it a little in the other 2010s Horror Ranking topic, the poll for next ranking has been pretty consistently close. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of starting with the organized crime list as the first crime movie ranking (because really organized crime is what started crime films as we know them now) so I'm leaning toward having that be the next list.

Are there any major thoughts one way or the other?

Not here. This isnt exactly my genre like horror was but I wanted to try whatever it was so Im in for anything!

Id say just do what you think is best.

Just do the one you feel like

I think disorganized crime has the more fun set of films but starting with organized makes sense.

The slow-mo start of this one (and white contacts) making you think this is a standard zombie story, all leading to the sudden smash cut to 34 Minutes Earlier and Hell yeah Ill do some bath salts is a great joke, and it really sells this short perfectly.

He just like me fr fr. An entire film shot in slow-mo is pretty interesting conceptually, the usage of music also makes this feel like it came from a 2010s comedy/horror movie, in a good way. That ending also really ties everything together really well.

Slo-mo Captain Underpants storms down the street and slams a few citizens to the curb before eating the cheek off some poor sap. I suspected our hero was on PCP, but in the ending flashback, we learn it was bath salts.
I think the flashback cheapened this story and shouldve been cut so the viewers could draw their own conclusions about the drug use. Other than that, this one was both terrifying and funny all at once, which is hard to pull off. B+

the only short to get into the film by winning an online contest, and yeah, it's pretty decent. Solid use of music, cool stylistic choice, funny one-liner

Here are some signs your ABCs of Death entry is going to suck: the entire thing is shot in slow motion; 90% percent is just a loud music track that drowns out dialogue or background noise; there is poo or pee either mentioned or visible in your video; your short starts with the letter M. M is for Masticate checks off each and every single one of the worst ideas that propagated the first movie and crammed them into one short. The slow motion here is annoying as hell and I was considering fast forwarding this about half way through just so I could watch it in a reasonable speed. Was the ending about it being bath salts supposed to be funny? Haha he wasnt a zombie it was bath salts? If so, it wasnt. It didnt surprise me to find out this one came from a contest of random people entering to try and get the M movie. It did surprise me that it won. What the hell else was submitted that this was the best of the bunch? See ABCs of Death 2.5 for the answer! Actuallydont.

Masticate is one of the shorts that feels like they'd have made the same thing regardless of the letter. Masticate isn't a word you choose...it's a word you justify for. I'd be curious what word he'd have used for the other 25 letters.

Man am I shocked I was the only one with Masticate in the bottom half! I HATED that one. The use of slow mo was egregiously bad and with no sound other than that music track for 95% of things, it really felt like a terrible music video. For some reason, the first movie hand a handful of shorts that were exactly like this and I hated all of those too. I dont know what it is about but his format that lends itself to directors going hey lets use slo mo and drown everything out with a generic music background track but I thought we were free of that it the second one but then this shows up.

Sorry to everyone that liked it, but was not a fan of this at all.
