something about this one really clicked for me, surprisingly. It's gross-out body horror humor, but done in a way that's ACTUALLY humorous (which is attempted MANY times throughout the two films, rarely successfully). It's dark as hell, funny as hell, hard to watch, and is actually making a point?

Raka
Huh, this one has very interesting presentation. It really reminds me of Jigoku Shoujo/Hell Girl, where people gets comeuppance for their (sometimes minor) sins. Poor girl, trying to cope with her home life by imagining horrible scenarios. Good for her for standing up for herself in the end, one of the few rare ones where the ending is uplifting.

jcgamer
Very impressive revenge fantasy with an actual good & relatable message

Suprak
This is another really weird one, almost too weird for me, but unlike a lot of the other weird ones this one is actually about something. It has a strong emotional core, and the flashback to her dog at the very end when shes cycling through stuff is probably the most touching moment out of either of these movies (weird considering that like thirty seconds before there is a giant penis monster). The sort of power fantasy the girl plays through as shes texting out all the bad things that have happened to her due to neglect is well done. While writing these up, I found out that the director here is typically a make up effect artist which makes a lot of sense because that was one of the strongest points of the short and the visual effects here are incredible considering what the budget supposedly was. I was actively hoping she wouldnt cut herself at the end and afraid we were going to get a real downer ending (what with this being the ABCs of death and all). I was relieved she survived, which is shocking considering the short had like three minutes to get me to care about her and a lot of it was a dogs head coming out of her moms anus or a guitar sprouting from the mans neck). Really effective filmmaking here and impressive that this was the guys first time as it was a lot better than most of the other entries.

Inviso
On the one hand, the visuals in this one really grossed me out and just generally made me feel uncomfortable (namely the penis imagery). But on the other hand, you feel for Miyuki and her shitty homelife, and its at least a positive message to fight back, rather than hurting yourself. Metaphorically, its fine, I just wish the visuals were a bit lessbad. Especially since they didnt really contribute to the ending in any meaningful way.

Karo
A teen angry at her parents imagines them being brutalized in bizarre cartoon fashion. Its just too... too.. something.

Snake
I kinda got the intent of it but the execution was sloppy

Tom
sodeep.txt

plasma
This one was bizarre and hard to follow, yet there were some gross images that stuck with me. Its not everyday you see a penis the size of a fire hydrant that launches an oversized sperm cell into a womans cheek, but I suppose that accurately illustrates how frustrating it is to grow up in a household where your mother is ignoring you in favor of an unhealthy romance. Even though I had Youth in my Bottom 10, I almost pegged it in the high-30s before I decided, "Y'know what, this one was too hard to follow," and dropped it to #46.

Of the 14 remaining, I'd say at least three fit the "weird" bill.

Its an age-old sci-fi plot, but that doesnt mean its a bad one. The idea of a utopic society where you have to be pretty to survive is interesting. I mean, Logans Run was all about an age-limit, so this is the next logical step. My only question is how the hell that guy lived to be like, thirty years old before getting caught and killed.

John
This is quick, to the point, and well done. Frankly what more of the "dark edgy" shorts among this list could've really put more effort into being. I could legitimately see this being the brief prologue beginning of a bigger sci-fi flick.

plasma
Though the plot here is simpleClumsy Guy goofs up in a utopian society and gets literally burned for itI love the attention to detail in this one. All the actors look like they just walked out of a fashion magazine, their reactions are uniform, and the setting feels like Twitter if Twitter were a shopping mall. I got some serious man vs. conformity vibes out of this one. B

Karo
Set in a dystopian future where all ugly people are burned to death. Probably needed a bit more time to really explore the world and the message they were trying to convey.

Raka
Hold up! Ugly police! This is another well-executed and simple episode that feels like Black Mirror lite. It's fun to watch but there's just not too much substance there.

Tom
How did this guy come to be in this situation, and why was he walking around in public? So many questions. But it's a good enough concept short, I just wish there was more information.

jcgamer
Getting Ari Asterd for knocking over a pole? Harsh

Suprak
What was that 80s show where they killed you when you got too old? I cant think of the name and typing kill when you get too old into Google didnt do anything but put me on a watch list. Anyway, this short is a pretty clear homage to that. And itsfine. Like it looks fine and it gets the concept across quickly, but it also isnt all that remarkable for any reason at all. They just show them killing the ugly guy in a fire and then everyone claps. Everyone clapping along is mildly unnerving, but this isnt a wholly original idea and the execution leaves a bit to be desired. One of the more forgettable segments in the second film, and I feel like if I was asked to list them all this would be one of the last ones I got to.

Snake
And everyone clapped - this felt like high school writing.

That's what I thought to!

I watched it and thought "man, this really has a kinda distinct style to it" that seemed a little more refined than a lot of the other shorts. So then when I was looking up all the directors it just sorta clicked. I definitely want to check out more of his stuff, because he certainly knows how to shoot a sci-fi flick if nothing else.

Other things he's done:
  • Cypher
  • Nothing
  • Splice
  • Haunter
  • a bunch of assorted TV episodes of stuff like Hannibal, Westworld, Locke & Key, Hemlock Grove, etc

This was it! I found it shortly after doing my write up by changing my search parameters some. But yeah, it reminded me of Logan's Run but not really as interesting. I'm kind of glad Utopia got bumped now, even though I have three ranked lower than it. It just didn't strike me as particularly memorable so it kind of stuck out compared to what else is left.

Context would be great, but for me that's what made it feel so much like an opening prologue to a horror movie. Like this scene happens, cut to title, then cut to the introduction of the actual main characters

Reminds me of a Tool video. Its freakin fantastic. Some of the best stop-motion work Ive seen. So dark, grimy, disgusting, and creative and weird while still having a point to it.

plasma
This was wonderfully fucked up. Im not gonna pretend I fully understood it, but it was mesmerizing to watch. A guy who looks like the lovechild of Elmer Fudd and a snowcone gets strapped to a table and chopped up for body parts that spawn an offspring. Then the offspring starts decapitating people and shoving their heads into a spiders anus, where other heads wait to eat the freshly decapitated ones.
I absolutely loved this and want to watch it again. There were revenge elements, tons of delicious body horror, and content that I can mentally chew on. The clay-mation gave it a surreal and gross aesthetic that repulsed me at first, but quickly won me over. I also learned a new word in deloused. A+

Tom
Amazingly atmospheric and creepy. The effects in this are really good, and while what you are seeing can be hard to comprehend, it doesn't change how fascinating it is. I'd love to see more lore to this one.

John
going from the predictable Capital Punishment directly to this was such insane whiplash, and it's experiences like that that honestly made these movies worth seeing imo

Karo
A strange little animated segment about making elder pacts with the cosmic cockroach god. Maybe. It is certainly original at least.

Raka
Wow, this animation is disturbing but pretty well-made and high fidelity, props to the filmmaker. Other than that, I didn't get much from it though, it's a bit too confusing for me. Just really good disgusting visuals. Also what the hell is Delouse, sounds French.

jcgamer
Cool animation; weird story

Inviso
This one was properly creepy, but the stop-motion animation style just wasnt my cup of tea. It was just gross and unpleasant to watch overall.

Suprak
Luckily this one shows up early in the proceedings in the sequel just in case you thought the whole thing was going to be good. I think there are some directors that think if theyre weird enough people will be afraid to question it and hope they just say they liked it so no one asks any follow up questions. I feel like the director here made this using Madlibs because nothing here makes sense and it plays out like a fever dream but not even an interesting one. This feels like it was made by the lol SO RANDOM kid at your lunch table in eighth grade, and there is a point where it feels like theyre trying too hard to be random and it runs past that point screaming gibberish within the first ten seconds. The horrible stop motion animation is just the rotten cherry on top.

Sure, I can understand that. Personally, I love basically any stop-motion movie sometimes just for the sheer amount of impressive effort that goes into the production. And some of the models and effects in Deloused were so crisp and detailed that it went beyond the quality of even something like Coraline for me (not that it's a better film overall than Coraline, just model wise).

There is definitely a huge quality gap between those and Deloused for me. I know the budget was orders of magnitude different though, so it is unfair to compare them. But at least this confirms I don't hate all stop motion animation haha. This felt more like those really old Christmas stop motion productions which I'm also not a fan of for anything other than nostalgia.

Tom
This short has the pacing of a feature film, and feels very well made. It's especially nice to see the iconic Beatrice Dalle, probably the most famous actor to be in either of the ABCs films. We get to see her silently melt down, as she tends to, and ends with a dark scene of child murder and dissection.

plasma
Now this one pushed the envelope! It opens with a disgruntled babysitter looking down at a kid playing the worlds most annoying xylophone. The babysitters anger mounts and mounts until you assume she snapped off-camera. I expected the woman to beat herself into a coma or something, but when the parents get homeoh manthey walk into the living room and discover the obliterated corpse of their little sweetheart. All you can see is the girls ribcage lying in the middle of a blood-soaked carpet while the babysitter uses the girls bones to tap away at the ribcage, her brand new xylo-bone. Unreal. A

Raka
This one is gorgeously shot and lit. It looks professional. The imagery at the end is horrifying but the juxtaposition between the psychotic nanny and the girl is really engaging visually. This is why people need good noise cancelling headphones.

Snake
I expect nothing less from the director of Inside

Karo
A psychopathic babysitter acquires a gruesome new instrument. It is simple yet horrifying.

Suprak
There is stuff here I like, and the image of the older woman playing on the kids ribcage at the end is perfectly creepy. It is a nice quick gut punch and the older actress does a great job emoting crazy here in a way that just feels unsettling. But overall this one is incredibly obvious. You know what X is going to stand for almost immediately and as soon as the older woman makes her first wince you know the child is dead. I feel like ribcage/xylophone is just about an immediate connection for some people as well, so while I appreciate the parallel I dont think it is particularly clever or unique. The short just doesnt have the punch or creativity as some of the best shorts in the series, even if I think it is well crafted and put together.

John
it felt obvious where it was going from like 5 seconds in, in part because they basically just chose the very first word anyone would think of starting with "x," but it's still creepy as hell

Inviso
I dont really feel anything about this one. It honestly couldve been even shorter without losing anything substantial. Its just some off-screen shock horror I guess.

jcgamer
Little kid + a xylophone is a pretty annoying combination. Fair.

This is basically exactly how I felt, and maybe that's like a person-specific kind of thing? Because I knew X was coming up, saw the xylophone, and just thought immediately "she's gonna kill the kid and play the ribcage as a xylophone." And that's exactly what happened. But maybe that's not a universal connection to go to?

They should've swerved and had the girl going to take an x-ray at the start for her ribs but she's playing the xylophone in the waiting room and when she goes into the doctor's office she finds the doctor's actually racist and the X is for Xenophobia.

Haha, yeah I don't know what that says about us but that was literally my exact same thought process! I had the whole thing mapped out as soon as the babysitter winced. The first time I watched this, I shouted out "Xylophone!" before it even started as my guess because there are so few X words. I was half joking, but then it is Xylophone, and then you have ribcage as a xylophone which is something you've seen in numerous cartoons before.

Again, you and I could just be weird! But it was maybe the most predictable one to me, even if I recognize it was really well done from an execution standpoint.

I also didn't know this was the same person behind Inside. That's super cool.

But then as the racist doctor is approaching her, the xerox machine from the office upstairs falls through the floor and crushes them.

I'm actually kind of surprised that we didn't have someone do this now that I think about it. As many letter red herrings as possible as a sort of joke leading into the final reveal. Not that it would necessarily be "good" but it seems like a fun idea someone might've been able to do well.

Yes! And the xerox machine somehow prints out porn - X is for XXX.

But then Lucy Lawless kicks down the front door and demands to know what happened to the Xerox machine she was using to manufacture her independent porno magazine.

It kicks back out to the "X is for XXX" screen and it sloppily crosses that out and writes under it a hasty X is for Xena.

Damn how did Snake5s and I not get invited to submit our own short?

Ahhhhh, those are some great ideas for fake-outs. Like others have said, I'm surprised we didn't get a deliberate sequence of fake-outs for letters like Q, X, or anything really.

Also, I'm surprised I'm not the only one who loved Deloused. Fully expected Deloused to end up in the mid-20s because of how weird it is. To think it was #1 until jcgamer and Suprak (who is no longer my BFF) dropping their rankings...that's mind-blowing.

Deloused, for me, was the most wildly original short on the list. No other short took me on a journey like this one did, and the stop-motion animation was the icing on the brainy, imaginative cake.

I'm shocked Hyrdo-Electric Diffusion is still on there. But I don't think it's going down just yet, either.

I'll go with M is for Masticate.

It wasn't my fault! I killed your number 1 as revenge for you killing my number 1 in the 2010s horror rankings. Which was your revenge for me ranking Terrifier number 30.

Which means...uh oh. My number 1 might be in trouble here. We gotta stop getting revenge on each other at some point.

A is for Amateur was such a good fakeout that I accidentally listed it as A is for Assassin in the original topic

And arguably WTF was an effective fakeout too with the way it plays with Wizard, Walrus, Warrior, etc

As for Xylophone and predictability...
I, uh, initially looked up the shorts by themselves on YouTube, so I had to had the list of titles open, so I got spoiled for all of them lol.

Yeah, but it ending on WTF is kind of a strike against it to me. I did enjoy the other Ws depicted though.

Oof that sucks. The surprise of what the letter might be is half the fun!

WTF for whatever reason never felt like misdirects to me. Like I never thought oh its gonna be walrus! It was more just like oh theyre putting in a bunch of w words all at once. It never had the set up to be a misdirect, at least for me.
