Without a doubt, one of the stupidest things you'll see. This short has had a legacy for years, showing up in plenty of internet memes. This gets a benefit for being one of the most memorable ones, even though it is absolutely dumb as fuck. But for a compilation film like this, standing out is perfectly acceptable, and these are the kinds of things that stick with you years to come. The director, Noboru Iguchi, has a history of making garbage like this, and you should definitely watch it. His magnum opus is a feature length film called Zombie Ass Toilet of the Dead. If for whatever reason you decide not to watch (don't know why you wouldn't), I will tell you the plot of it. It's a movie about a girl who's sister killed herself because she farted in public, so now the main girl is afraid of ever farting. Jump to the present, and there is a weird strain of a parasite that really messes with people's stomach and gives them cramps and bloating and gas. The parasite will also physically come out of people's mouths or butts, and it eats the brains and kills them (sometimes their head explodes) or mind controls them basically turning them into zombies. There is a good portion of movie where they are battling people infected with these and then during the climax the main girl puts her fear aside, and uses her excessive gas to finally fart, and she uses it as a jetpack to fly around while fighting the queen parasite in the air. But Fart was certainly something too. So stinky.

by no comparison, there is not a single short more unforgettable on either anthology, or probably any horror anthology, as F is for Fart. A lot of these shorts are stupid, or toilet-humored, but nobody had as distinct and unwavering of a vision of what they wanted their film to be as Noboru Iguchi, who would just one year later move on to direct something called Gothic Lolita Battle Bear.

Uh, this segment. So hey, do you like your anime school drama with a side of flatulent schoolgirls? Then this may be for you.
There's just something so absurd about the situation and the serious manner in which the story handles it. I have to give props to the actresses for being able to say all the lines without breaking out laughing. It is definitely elevated far beyond the juvenile base concept.

I dont know where the hell to rank this one. On the plus side, this was the point where I watched it at the party that everyone became fully invested because it was like oh were dealing with crazy stuff arent we. At the same time though, I feel like this director was maybe just really into farts and when he got $5000 he was like ok cool now to get women to fart on camera for me like I always wanted. We have some people that try to tell some semi-serious and semi-scary story, and this one is just like what if a girl farts and then another girl smells in and then she gets sucked into the girls butt. It is so weird and dumb that it cycles back around to borderline enjoyability and this was absolutely the one that got the biggest laughs at the party where I first watched it. Watching it a second time without the benefit of friends and alcohol though, it comes across less crazy and more creepy. Like you just know Asian lesbian schoolgirl fart is in this directors search history somewhere and it blunts the humor a bit for me.

In the wake of a gas-based apocalypse, a school girl chooses to die via a particularly vigorous fart coming from her teacher Miss Yumi. The fart has hallucinogenic qualities (not to mention atrocious special effects) and it sends the school girl into a trippy world of student-teacher lust while Persona-esque music plays in the background.
Obviously, this short is fucked up beyond comprehesion, and Im blessed that nobody walked by while I was watching thisI dont know how I could explain myself to a passerby. Anyway, I initially thought I would be ranking this one dead last, but others stories that followed managed to out-stink it. At least this one gets points for being bizarre. F

Haha this was one that I truly had no clue where it would rank. Like I said in my write up, the first time I watched this was at a drunken Halloween party with friends and F is for Fart by far got the hugest reaction. Have you every shown Katamari Damacy to friends who don't play a lot of "Japanese" games? That sort of "hahahaha what the hell is happening?!?" reaction is the same reaction F is for Fart got. It is still brought up in our friend circle.

Yeah, it was hard to rank for me as well. On one hand it's undeniably unique and memorable. Can't take that away from it. But the humor didn't click with me, so I had to rank it in my bottom 10.

Agreed. I can appreciate pretty much any short in this lineup outside of WTF and Miscarriage, which were both lazy and uninspired IMO. Even Zetsumetsu (which I ranked dead last) has its redeeming qualities.

I like it a lot! It was a good balance between disturbing and funny, some of the visuals were really creative. And I like the guy trying to hold his laughter but failed after he finally helped decapitate the harakiri guy and the head got that kabuki make-up effect. Pretty small in scall but quite effective.

Honestly, a big part of what gets this short high marks from me is the expert camera work. Im sure there were plenty of hidden cuts, but being able to rotate and have the unseen actors properly get into position as the camera pans was expertly done. And I think using those pans to tell the story of the dissolution of the two main characters relationship was a good choice, and the end result was a funny story of bros before hos, as it were.

I want to call this one Cain & Abel on the Beach. Two brothers (I assume theyre brothers, or at least BFFs) find themselves stranded on an island with some beer and eventually a zesty brunette who washes ashore. One guy gets the girl, the other gets jealous, then Cain tries to kill Abel before he decides bros before hos and whips a rock at the womans head, killing her.
This was funny, surprising, and had some solid camerawork. My only complaint is that it shouldve ended on the image of Send Beer instead of having a rock thrown at the audience. A-

It feels like a bad Budweiser ad that would play during the Super Bowl, and essentially the whole short is a set up for the send beer gag at the end. I feel like this is something one of those TAKE MY WIFE, PLEASE! boomers would laugh really hard at which should never be your target audience for anything. The swinging camera is at least an interesting way for this to have been filmed, and it is a lot more fun to look at than a lot of other entries on this list. The actual content here kinda sucks, but the presentation is nice at least.

Another two in my bottom half drop, which is nice! I didn't really like either of these, although the production value on Equilibrium was at least good. It is another one that really feels like a commercial to me, where all it needed at the end was the two of them opening up an ICE COLD Budweiser and then celebrating when a dog washes up on store instead of a DUMB OL' WOMAN.

I'll go with Invincible dropping next, too. Gotta get those big bucks to make up for all the money Jidai Geki stole from me.

It's also starting to look like I was the most boring ranker this contest, except for the film that was at number one that me and one other poor soul knocked down to almost 10. Go big on your outliers, is what my pappa always told me.

This was fine. I mean, I think anyone could see what was coming the second you introduced the businesswoman, but everything leading up to the ending was solid. There was some definite tension to the mundanity of the scenes we were getting. That ending was so cheesy though, complete with an over-the-top scream and emotions from multiple characters, that it kinda took me out of the movie.

This whole cast is atrocious and the dad at the end who loses his kid reacts like someone just told him that they dont have Coke and is Pepsi ok. I have no clue why the the one guy is filmed with the camera pointing directly towards him from his waist, but either that was the director and he didnt trust any one else with the camera or the director had just done some bath salts that were left over from M is for Masticate and thought this was a good idea. This film should inspire you because youd do a better job than this guy. The only slightly clever thing is the word search is the answer for what the letter N is, but thats the only thing. I really liked the way this story was told. You have the mundane segment about an IQ test, but then you have the aftereffects of that IQ test being horrifying and actually disadvantageous for doing well. Its short and concise, and I liked that.

The best of these play off some sort of universal, primordial fear which is why this one is perfect for me because Ive always been afraid of people testing my intelligence just so they can steal my brain and cram it into a gorilla. Nice try, SATs, but no way am I going to c.o.l.l.e.g.e. when I know that final GE in your obvious acronym stand for Gorilla Expeirment. Also, this dude doesnt die! This is ABCs of Death not ABCs of Zany Gorilla Body Swaps. I half expected a zany sound effect at the end when his eyes opened all big in what was clearly a fake gorilla suit. All that aside though, this is almost suitably creepy and that first quick cut to him on the operating table is really effective. There is something almost good here if you ignore the batshit craziness of the underlying concept. It isnt good, but it is sort of weird and unique and Ill take that over a lot of the other stuff here.

This was easily my favorite write up so far. I was in stitches after the Coke/Pepsi remark and in tears after the bath salts one. Well done, sir. Somehow you made me laugh harder than the actual short.

I don't know why Y for Youth was ever on the betting board. It had a very heavy handed message, and anything that beats you in the face with a message that hard has no risk of being missed with subtlety, and therefore will score well.

There is a bit of stylization here which is nice and a bit of black humor which is also nice, but Im not 100% either really worked at least for me. It is sort of a clever twist on what every other short is where the woman cannot die but seems like she very much wants to. None of the kids want to be invincible either, so they fight over who has to eat the stone. I dont hate the premise here, is what Im getting at. It justI dunno. Its missing something to make it special. Some of the cinematography comes off a little amateurish and I think they couldve done a better job leaning into that black humor inherent in this concept. I didnt hate it but I just didnt find it to be all that special either.

Interesting concept, with an immortal woman whose bastard children want her dead for her inheritance. Its just a little TOO stylized in a way like a Freddy Krueger nightmare for me to be completely onboard, but its still a solid effort.

Super forgettable. How many times have we seen a greedy family trying to kill a parent/grandparent for their inheritance? This one didnt do anything to impress me. They kill the old lady three or four times, but she keeps using Phoenix Downs until she finally gets swallowed by one of her descendants or something. Im honestly not sure what happened at the end. C-

It was original and all but I feel a lot of the problem with these shorts is they dont do a good job of explaining what theyre about quick enough and just leave you confused

Instead of putting grandma in a nursing home they try to murder her but it doesnt work because she is immortal or something, it is explained very poorly.

This was horrifying. You have a town of over-eager shitheads who are willing to execute a man based on NOTHING, and the film covers the time it takes to watch him get marched to his death, all the while knowing that the town has been made aware of his innocence, and yet theyre unable to alert the executioners in any way. Its weird that there are cars, but no cell phonesbut whatever. Its still intense, and even up until the death itself, its still a surprise to get such a bleak and unfair ending.

This is a pretty simple but excellent premise. The dramatic irony is also quite interesting, to see if an innocent man will get his justice. Sad that he didn't but, well...sometimes that's truth in television.

This is another one that is almost good but doesnt quite get there. It has the marks of competence at least, with solid enough acting and filming and all that good stuff that is missing in a huge chunk of this list. I wonder if this actually wouldve been better filmed if you dont get the reveal until after hes been decapitated. All you get is the car crash which doesnt add much to it. Id rather have that sort of brutality, them being proud of themselves, only to drive back into town and find out. Then cut, end short. The way it is here is kind of hectic but not really in an interesting way and it doesnt quite have the impact it should. Interesting concept and well made, but I think it falters on the execution (HAHA GET IT) a bit.
