Neither of those two were that bad to me but their placement here makes sense. Both short, mostly contextless, quick hitting little segments without much substance to them. Like I said, I even thought Ingrown was well shot and it looked like the director knew what he was doing (compared to something like E for Exterminate where I didnt get that sense at all). But I wanted more out of these.

Like they both sort of heard ABCs of Death and were like cool we filmed a death thats enough, right?

Oh btw I had Gravity at 27, not 42. Its total score is right though.

I think if I did my super quick and tired math right, coming up next is the largest gap between two adjacent rankings in terms of score at 19 points. So we might be leaving the tier of "universal to near universal dislike" but I dunno for sure.

Yep, after the Bottom 11 there's a noticeable gap. Which makes sense because we've weeded out most of the films that can be regarded as undercooked or poorly made. Still surprised by some of the survivors, but we're doing good work.

Nobody guessed Ingrown even though I added it to the menu right after #44 dropped! Oh well.

Due to yesterday's double-drops, we had an interesting situation... Nook and Karo both picked Gravity for #43 (Nook even said to autopick Gravity until he bet otherwise) but it landed at #42. Nook/Karo also picked WTF for #45, and it dropped in the same update at #44. So here's what I'm gonna do. Nook/Karo will each get half credit on Gravity and WTF (250 + 250 = 500).

Going forward, if we have any more double-updates, bettors will get half-credit if they guess the exact movie but it lands in the wrong slot. Does that sound reasonable?

I dont want anything to do with poo in a movie. Thats my number one movie making rule. How much poo is in your movie? If you had to think, thats too much poo. This is pretty clearly trying to be funny and thats a pretty big issue because this is pretty definitely not funny. Woman battles a stubborn piece of poo for four minutes and then loses when it goes back in her butt is a funny sentence to write out, I guess, but far less funny to watch and I kind of feel like this one mightve taken the top spot if we only polled nine-year-olds. The animation wasnt bad though, I guess.

A woman turns tricks for money, then gets her cold hard cash stolen by a lowlife boyfriend while she and her kids suffer. I expected this one to be called P Is For Poverty or P Is For Prostitute, but the ending threw us a curveball when our protagonist gives up prostitution in favor of starring in kitty-cat snuff films. This one actually raised an interesting question: How far would you go to abandon a life of humiliation and desperation? I love the message, and the twist genuinely surprised me. Great ending too, with the woman smiling blissfully while enjoying the company of her kids. I imagine some feline owners will have a problem with this one, but I dont blame the woman one bit. B

On the one hand the fact that people have actually done crushing videos like this is fucking horrific, and I was disgusted when I saw it was going that direction, but presenting a character with the choice of do this or you & your kids are homeless is kind of intriguing. Upsetting but gives you something to think about, which I imagine was the goal

P might actually be for Parkinsons because this director can not hold a camera straight to save his life. There were multiple still shots here that we shaky and a couple parts at the beginning that looked like he mightve been balancing himself on a unicycle while he was trying to film. I dont actually totally hate this one, kitten crushing aside. I feel like the core premise here is essentially what would you do for your family and you can actually feel the desperation even if there wasnt any actual dialogue here. There likely wasnt any dialogue because the actress performs the absolute worst fake crying Ive ever seen when shes robbed, so Im assuming speaking on camera was thrown right out as something they were going to have her do. But even with the terrible filming and the bad acting and the bad directing, I feel like there is almost something potentially interesting here. It isnt good but it isnt terrible either, and it does a better job at communicating an idea than most of the shorts in the first movie. This one couldve been good if the director was even halfway competent, but sadly we fall way short of that.

While I do enjoy the cinematography for its ability to present very truthful situations (it feels the most realistic by the time I wrote this review), but the death itself wasn't really built up towards most satisfactorily. It's sad because of the kitty victim but it could've been something more. Still not terrible in the grand scheme of things (and by which I mean this ranking)

but there's also a difference beyond just how grotesque something is, which is why I didn't like the scene in Terrifier but didn't mind the similar scene in Bone Tomahawk. It fit the context of the savage brutality of the creatures in BT, but felt weirdly misogynistic and sexually abusive in Terrifier.

Oh yeah, for sure. This is essentially how I felt about M is for Miscarriage and P is for Pressure is somewhat in the same vein.

What makes this slightly better for me is that it slightly works as an idea instead of whatever lazy mess M is for Miscarriage was. The central idea here of the crushing nature of pressure works not just because of the literal pressure on the kitten, but the figurative pressure on the woman (to provide for her family). There is at least a reason why the death here is caused by pressure beyond the shock value.

I really dont want to spend too much time defending this though because its terrible regardless haha. That at least though is why this was slightly better than Terrifier or M is for Miscarriage, which felt like they had no other ideas than to be as distasteful or shocking as possible without anything behind them.

I totally get why you found it distasteful, but showing the kitten struggling serves a thematic purpose. That image is supposed to be hard-to-watch because it reflects the unsafe/repulsive daily life of a prostitute. She's facing an ugly dilemma, and the image of the struggling kitten (struggling pussy) conveys just how awful her situation is.

You mean the ugly dilemma of not being able to buy her brat the overpriced toy she doesn't really need?

Why would Libido involve a cop call? I remember reading that it was one of the most praised from ABCs1. Not that I really expect it to make top 10 here or anything, but I know it was one of the most well received ones.

For me, the death was unearned because the short failed monumentally at providing any real meaning or purpose. Killing of animals is one of the cheapest and laziest ways of providing shock, in anything really. You can absolutely do it in a way that's effective but here, especially after countless shorts of nonsense and this providing little reprieve, it is just total garbage.

In regards to Terrifier, it feels a lot more earned from my view because they did a fine job of establishing Art as an antagonist already, and that brutal death he delivers does the trick of making him even scarier. And, you may or may not agree with this, but there's also a sense of heightened fantasy to it too, where it doesn't feel as real or grounded in something like P is for Pressure is supposed to be.

Genuinely surprised that K is for Klutz did worse than some of the other gross-out shorts. Yeah, it stars a squeaky cartoon turd, and its plot is a bit too similar to E is for Exterminate, but the animation looks neat and it keeps things from being more viscerally disgusting than a "Mr. Hankey" episode of South Park. How could you complain about this being too gross and rank it lower than "F is for Fart?"

As for P is for Pressure, I'm a huge cat lover and originally had this ranked much lower because I was pissed off, but I watched it a couple more times, and I had to admit that at least it treated the kitten's death as a senseless horrible tragedy instead of a joke, and the whole dilemma of "Do you participate in this evil system for the well-being of your kids" gave it more respectable weight than some of the other shorts that tried to go for "serious and bleak" like I is for Ingrown.

Two of the sexiest men imaginable star in this bizarre grandson-grandfather rivalry story. It opens with the grandson criticizing his grandfathers liquor selection before were treated to an absurd bedroom scene that ends with the grandad stabbing the younger man with a glorified fingernail. I initially planned to write G is for Garbage and end my writeup there, but something about this one clicked for me. Its pretty funny, and it expresses the jealousy that older folks feel when they see the younger generation. Bonus points because my dad happened to walk into the living room right as the grandad exposed his comically grotesque pubic bushwe both laughed our asses off over that. If anyone asks my dad, How was your Memorial Day weekend? hes gonna have to change the subject real quick. B-

This one only ranks as high as it does because I found the grandpa shaped hole in the bed hilarious. This is another one that is intentionally bizarre, but it works a lot better than some of the other bizarre shorts in the compilation. I mean, no short than ends with a zoom on grandpas pubic bush should be this high but hey, here we are. I wouldnt say this is good, but its interesting at least. Weird enough to make it memorable but not so weird that I wanted to skip over it. Congrats on finding that happy medium!

This was largely just unpleasant and gross. The douchey guy looks like British Andy Samburg, and we get an unnecessary shot of him smearing toothpaste around his mouth while brushing his teeth, whichew. And then we discover that his granddad carved a body-sized divot in the bed to hide there, wearing the same underwear and socksfor some reason. And then what really knocks this down to the bottom of the list, the granddad strips of the underwear and flashes his dickless crotchagain, unnecessary. Too much shock value for shock values sake.

This is the upside-down nightmare version of the Seinfeld Contest episode, and I love it. This short holds nothing back as it introduces two competitors who are strapped to a chair and forced to out-jerk each other while watching grotesque people and appalling situations. The winner of each round advances, while the loser gets sodomized by a torture device.
Part of the fun is wondering how far the director is willing to take this thing, and yeeeeesh, does it go far. I have to admit, I found myself confused at times, and the chainsaw ending felt like overkill, but this one was twisted and one of the best. A

I get that the fun of this project is different directors with wildly different takes on filmmaking, but you just cant follow a scene with a sentient squeaky poo with a scene with implied child rape. It is interesting or clever or anything, really, just as many disturbing things as the director can think of crammed into a couple of minutes. Its weird that masturbation contest to the death is the least crazy thing about this. The biggest issue for me is this just isnt fun to watch and it leans way too hard on gross out imagery instead of things of actual substance. It was one of the few I was genuinely dreading rewatching for this project.

This crisis is averted in an unexpected manner: Scout, Jem, and Dill show up, and Scout inadvertently breaks the mob mentality by recognizing and talking to a classmate's father, and the would-be lynchers disperse.
Atticus does not want Jem and Scout to be present at Tom Robinson's trial. No seat is available on the main floor, but the Rev. Sykes, the pastor of Calpurnia's church, invites Jem, Scout, and Dill to watch from the colored balcony. Atticus establishes that Mayella and Bob Ewell are lying. It is revealed that Mayella made sexual advances toward Tom, subsequently resulting in her being beaten by her father. The townspeople refer to the Ewells as "white trash" who are not to be trusted, but the jury convicts Tom regardless. Jem's faith in justice is badly shaken. Atticus is hopeful that he can get the verdict overturned, but Tom is shot 17 times and killed while trying to escape from prison.
Despite Tom's conviction, Bob Ewell is humiliated by the events of the trial. Atticus explained that he destroyed Ewell's last shred of credibility. Ewell vows revenge, spitting in Atticus' face, trying to break into the judge's house and menacing Tom Robinson's widow. Finally, he attacks Jem and Scout while they are walking home on a dark night after the school Halloween pageant. Jem suffers a broken arm in the struggle, but amid the confusion, someone comes to the children's rescue. The mysterious man carries Jem home, where Scout realizes that he is Boo Radley.
Sheriff Tate arrives and discovers Ewell dead from a knife wound. Atticus believes that Jem was responsible, but Tate is certain it was Boo. The sheriff decides that, to protect Boo's privacy, he will report that Ewell simply fell on his own knife during the attack. Boo asks Scout to walk him home. After she says goodbye to him at his front door, he disappears, never to be seen again by Scout. While standing on the Radley porch, Scout imagines life from Boo's perspective.

Best write-up so far, imo.

It's always fun having Tom in these projects because you know his list is going to be interesting and different from everyone else. I thought this one might sneak into the top half, so it doesn't surprise me it got a 1 and a 5. Definitely what I would describe as "too much" for me but I know my tastes don't always line up with everyone else.

I thought this one might sneak into the top half, so it doesn't surprise me it got a 1 and a 5. Yeah, I'm surprised that Nook and I were the only ones to rank it in the top half, especially after he mentioned yesterday that Libido is often considered one of the best from ABCs #1. I thought the bizarre scenario alone would elevate it into the top half, but clearly it wasn't palatable for most of the group.
