here for a night on a road trip to New Orleans from Chicago (left Memphis in the morning, staying in Jackson) and its been a series of bad times

to be fair, a lot of it wasnt necessarily the state of citys fault, but there hasnt been much positive here to offset the bummer stuff

I would say yes it is, actually.

It's in the right geographical area for "worst state" but it isn't number one. Even with the news.

Aside from the two obvious ones, Texas and California, Mississippi is the obvious "not-obvious" one.

My vote would be West Virginia, but I might be biased as my wife has family there so I've seen it more often than anyone should have to.

Mississippi isn't a terrible choice, though. I'd say it is probably bottom ten.

I would lose no sleep if Mississippi, its government a bloated orgy of plantation failsons and incestuous knife worms, was summarily dismantled and renamed by its even more bloated inmate population. It entered an ass measuring contest with Alabama and somehow lost even more. It inherits none of the cajun flavour of its Western neighbors, none of the scientific history of its eastern neighbors, likely spared from Haiti's maltreatment only by the interests of its enslaver population and the boozed up death hug of the Johnson administration. It's an impressive achievement what that state legislature has 'accomplished' over the past hundred years, taking the vein of America and still becoming the South's own arrhythmic tumor.

We went through on a road trip from Atlanta to New Orleans. Didn't experience anything foul (and as an interracial couple) and mostly had a good time there. Only visit thus far.

I mean the flag literally had a confederate symbol until a couple of years ago

Wyoming is barely out of the bottom ten

I think it actually gets a decent number of tourists thanks to Yellowstone

When you ask the worst state, West Virginia comes to mind.

Wyoming for me. Having to drive through it is so boring when its the same the entire way. Hardly any towns.

Michigan, their government stuff is crap, and i'm not even talking politics, i'm talking just filing paperwork and the like.

Mississippi and Alabama are the two worst.

I can't imagine spending more than a day in either state in the Summer. We have humidity bad enough in Ohio, but down there? Yikes

I absolutely hate living in Alabama but I imagine that Mississippi is worse

at least Alabama has Birmingham

He's wrong but I don't think the tourism stat is the right one to use. I love visiting California but I think it's a bad place to live.

Of the states I have been to/driven through, Washington state has to be up there in terms of an absolute hellscape. Seattle is saturated with violent and insane homeless people, and when i stopped in Spokane for gas, we watched a bunch of really skeezy people get into a fist fight close to the homeless encampment under the interstate overpass

*note I have not been to "the south" except for Florida
