Day 11 Results

(1) Ink Long Dry (XIV: Heavensward) - 18
(16) Servants of the Mountain (AKA People of the North Pole) (X) - 17

(8) Fisherman's Horizon (VIII) - 18
(9) Tidus's Theme (X) - 16

(5) real Emotion (FFX-2 Mix) (Eng) (X-2) - 18
(12) The Feywood (XII) - 17

(4) Full Speed Ahead (AKA Run) (XIII-2) - 25
(13) Zero (Type-0) - 9

Low turnout today. Not sure if people are burned out or this set of matches just didn't inspire much passion.

In any case, three of the matches were incredibly tight today, we were very close to having 3 tiebreakers to settle! But for once things broke for the high seeds. Servants of the Mountain becomes the first tiebreaker winner to lose in the main contest, and XII and Type-0 are eliminated here. X goes 0 for 2!

I know different people have different preferences, and I'm not really an impartial observer on this, but man... the Ink Long Dry support/win is (for the contest so far) the one I can rationalize the least, just don't get it. And that's fine, I don't need to get it, art and beauty are in the eye of the beholder. At least it's not as bad as What Angel Wakes Me.

Though I am listening to today's playlist and I'm excited to see what Omega has in store, if it's as good as Ultima might be the new "get the extended loop/play on repeat" song for the next day or two!

Also nice result for Run but is that more due to being vs. Zero or its own high quality... I guess we'll see, I can see that winning the division.

XIV's last 4 matches: 20-18, 20-18, 21-20, 18-17, all in its favour. It's on one hell of a run of veeeery tight wins lol.

First time I heard Ink Long Dry I figured it would be divisive. I like it personally after a few listens (Servants too), but I was always gonna support the winner of FH/Tidus over it.

I'm also interested to see how much of Run's dominance was due to popularity and how much was the matchup. I don't even know if R2 will illuminate us much on that, with real Emotion being divisive too!

Oh, I saw those last night and told myself I ought to vote in them then in case I forget tomorrow, but I was literally about to go to bed and didn't want to listen to 8 songs first. Almost just voted off memory, but decided not to.

And now it's after 2 PM and I missed it.

Personally I like this rearrangement of Ink Long Dry from the hard mode of the dungeon a lot more, but then I'm generally more inclined towards piano tracks anyway.

Oh damn, thanks for sharing! I'm less inclined to piano nowadays, but I love and can appreciate this rendition!

Edit: seriously I'm listening to it a 2nd time right now. Maybe it's helping me understand the feelings for the non-piano version...

Same, honestly.

Most FFXIV nominations were trial musics, but there's some damn good dungeon and area musics that get overlooked.

The thing about a lot of these FFXIV tracks is that I just don't go for "epic choir." Maybe the Deadpool 2 joke ruined it for me forever. That's why these Ultima tracks and a lot of the trial tunes don't do it for me.

Yeah, the 'Footfalls' version is the one SE officially has on their Youtube channel, but the longer version that acts as the BGM to the full trailer is also showing up on Youtube now, although SE are bopping them whenever they find them unfortunately, so a link isn't going to be live for long.

Day 12 Results

(3) The Archylte Steppe (XIII) - 25
(14) Memoro De La Stono~Distant Worlds (Distant Worlds version) (XI) - 14

(6) From the Heavens (XIV: Stormblood) - 16
(11) Roses of May (IX) - 23

(7) Antipyretic - Arrange (Dissidia Arcade) - 25
(10) The Castle (VIII) - 14

(2) Eyes on Me (VIII) - 22
(15) The Valkyrie (VIIR) - 17

XIV's winning streak comes to an end today. XI exits the competition as soon as it arrived, but Dissidia Arcade (and through it, Tactics) scores a convincing win. The (3) seeds remain the only undefeated seed in the competition.

Match 2 was close in the early goings but before long the first 3 matches had clear leaders. Match 4 was tight but Eyes on Me went on a hot streak in the final hour to stop VIII from going 0/2. VIIR is yet to score a win with a track that wasn't in the original game!

oh man, last time I looked at the topic Valkyire was only down by 1... I was never expecting it to win though, the fact it kept so close for so long against a legend of a song was pretty good.

Also was nice to see banshinryuu's comment! I still remember first hearing the song in the game and (while trying to stay alive) marveling at how different it was from the rest, so unique. Made sense when I looked up the composer later on. Pretty great!

Alright I'll just post the results while we wait for a tiebreaker vote.

Day 13 Results

(1) Stamp (Global Jukebox Ver.) (VIIR) - 11
(16) Battle 3 (Mystic Quest) - 30

(8) Wayward Daughter (XIV: Stormblood) - 20
(9) Liberi Fatali (VIII) - 20

(5) Fight with Seymour (X) - 31
(12) Cantata Mortis & God in Fire (Dissidia 012) - 9

(4) Temporal Rift (AKA The Labyrinth of Time) (XIII-2) - 20
(13) Sunrise (XIV: Stormblood) - 20

Only one of Stamp's nominators came to support the dog, smh. Two dominant performances today and two matches that couldn't be tighter. Mystic Quest finally gets a win and Seymour breaks X's streak of 4 losses. Are Battle 3 and/or Seymour super strong or are Stamp and/or CM&GiF weak? Time will tell! Though it may be back to business as usual with the 1 seeds falling, we also had two tiebreaks today. Liberi Fatali and Temporal Rift made late comebacks to tie the Stormblood songs, and in the end... who knows???

Day 14 results

(3) 1000 Words (Eng) (X-2) - 14
(14) Zephyr Memories -Legend of the Eternal Wind- (Distant Worlds Version) (III) - 21

(6) Aria di Mezzo Carattere (VI) - 17
(11) Not Alone (AKA You're Not Alone!) (IX) - 19

(7) Melodies of Life (Eng) (IX) - 21
(10) Calm Before the Storm (AKA Silence Before the Storm) (X) - 14

(2) Answers (Distant Worlds Version) (XIV) - 24
(15) Somnus (XV) - 8

Ballads day does not bring in the votes. People too busy sobbing to type, I imagine.

With Eternal Wind's victory, every seed has now won- and lost- a match. 1000 Words fails to join Melodies of Life and the other main vocal themes in round 2, though X-2 fans still have real Emotion. IX and Distant Worlds go 2/2, as Answers puts in a strong performance (albeit in the match with the lowest votals of the whole contest!). Aria comes close to repeating Celes's comeback but there aren't enough votes to catch YNA.

After today's results, XIV is now guaranteed to have more tracks in round 2 than any other game.

my thing with the XIV music is that it's a completely different approach to music than the earlier games, so it feels really weird to compare them.

the earlier games are really about catchy and memorable melodies/leitmotifs. They get your attention in less than five seconds. this is due to the nature of hardware/games at the time.

meanwhile XIV's music (and a lot of the Remake tracks too) is much more modern in the sense that it is more about a long loop, steady tension background music. this makes it fun while you're playing, but it's just not memorable at all to me.

It's worth noting that of the 16 XIV tracks that made the contest, 10 of them were specifically made for boss fights, whilst a further 3 of them are featured in boss fights having been originally made for something else (of the remaining three, two are dungeon themes, one is an overworld/zone theme). So a much higher ratio of it is essentially battle music than when you compare it to the contest entries as a whole. There are dozens of more chill, charming or whimsical tracks that are more reminiscent of previous games in the series that simply didn't get in. There are several albums of the OST available on Spotify or other services if you ever want to try listening to a few at random and see if there's anything you like. In an ideal world the entries from XIV would have been a bit more balanced, but how often are things ever ideal?
