I'll explain for those who aren't on the B8 discord. I said I didn't like Ink Long Dry (twice, over a week apart, always after its match) and apparently that act was so heinous that people were voting for it solely to own the haters, as well as mocking anyone who doesn't like it.

You can bash Real Emotion as much as you want. Just don't you dare say you don't like ILD.

no, the issue was that "i don't know music theory enough to say why i dislike it" is a ridiculous comment. we all said that you weren't incessantly whining about it like other people. and sergio likes it (and more than its opponent), he just voted in the match rather than abstaining because of how much it was getting dumped on

I don't HATE real Emotion but it set an "ehhhh" expectation for the rest of X-2's soundtrack.

A wrong one, mind, but it still set said expectation.

Ink Long Dry, like it or not, is at least *interesting* and I prefer Bibliophobia more anyways.

Nice. Well, I'm sorry if I annoyed anyone, I didn't mean for it to come across as whining, it definitely started as exasperated befuddlement. How I'm being introduced to so many tracks from XIV that I love and then that pops up, after What Angel Wakes Me. I'll just never understand...

But I'll also never listen to either of them again barring the miracle of S-E creating a single player offline variation of XIV, let's keep that dream alive.

I also have trouble putting into words what I don't like about Ink Long Dry and it isn't as simple as "dissonance". (Though that's definitely part of it)

The thing that my gut wants to stay is something like "it lacks a cohesive rhythmic identity", but I think as written that statement is almost provably false. The fact that this is what I'm fixated on means it should be something related to this but what exactly I can't easily nail down.

it's just some atonal jazzy syncopation. it's meant to be uncomfortable/weird I guess. It fits what I assume is the setting - a weird mysterious library. like most FFXIV tunes it serves a purpose as background music more than being memorable in its own right.

I guess it makes sense that the vgmusic guys were offended that someone who knows nothing about music is voting, though. While I've cooled off now, I still probably won't vote out of respect for that.

for context, the first week of music 101 is "what is a note" and week 3 is "what does 'major' mean?". in other words, basic music knowledge you should know going in. it's what's known as a meh-tee-four

Nostalgia votes, maybe? While I legit like it more than Roses of May, I can't think of any song in any FF that makes me want to replay the game more than that w/ XIII... really just a memory of how great Chapter 11 was I guess. Trilogy replay has been on the to-do list for years now...

I guess I should respond since I played a role in this. Robazoid, I'm sorry if I contributed to you feeling unwelcome or any other negative feelings, I really don't want you to stop participating. I was not offended by your comment, I was just amused by the idea that you "don't know enough about music to explain why" you dislike Ink Long Dry, because I think you absolutely do. I also know virtually nothing about music theory and assumed (perhaps wrongly) that all the qualities that people tend to dislike about Ink Long Dry were understandable, straightforward, and could be expressed in plain, non-technical language. Stuff like: the piano sounds distorted, out of tune, or otherwise wrong; it often feels like there are either 'too many' or 'too few' layers of sound; the song abruptly goes from ominous to fun/chill and back again; it seemingly arbitrarily speeds up and slows down; generally every creative decision seems to make the song a less comfortable listening experience, and so on. These are things I love about this song and I figured they were the same things others hated. However, subsequent posts in this topic make me think the reasons people don't get on well with Ink Long Dry are harder to explain than I thought (and people shouldn't feel like they have to explain themselves anyway) so I apologise for making an ass of u and me.

My comment about my vote being an antiantivote was a half-joking contribution to the general antivote discussion happening. I legitimately like Ink Long Dry more than Fisherman's Horizon, especially since it seems like the latter is attached to some particularly emotional moment I don't know about due to never having played the game... but it's true that I tend to only vote in this contest on days when there's at least one song I care about, and Ink Long Dry got to be that one song partly thanks to negative posts which compelled me to defend it. Anyway, it's gone now, so I really hope we can all shake hands and move on.

Alright. Everybody is free to like or dislike any song here for any reason whatsoever, and nobody has made any comment I've seen that warrants some of the douchey responses made in the discord last night. Sometimes someone just doesn't like something, they don't have to be able to explain why! As long as people listen to both songs, there's no problem with how they vote.

@Robazoid @Mobilezoid I really hope you don't quit the contest because of this. I know next to nothing about music myself, and I'm bad at articulating my thoughts on subjects I do know about! The vgmusic people by and large seem cool, I've not really seen any snobbish behaviour outside of the one instance last night. Please don't let nfun's abrasive comment colour your opinion of the whole group! Of course if you feel uncomfortable continuing to take part then that's understandable, but know that most people don't have a problem with you or Martin or anyone else's musical opinions at all.

The reason that comment specifically irked me a lot was that there are a lot of obvious reasons why people wouldn't like Ink Long Dry. I'm not trying to tweak your nose again by saying you're dumb by not knowing those reasons or anything, it is just not a song you'd expect a given person to like. Which is the problem I had with people constantly reiterating how much they hate it. Of course you hate it! It'd be something almost redundant to state had the group as a whole only mentioned it once.

It's a very niche song, clearly, and the converse of most people hating it means that only a few people like it. Everybody likes seeing the songs they love do well, and even if they don't win here, if you know a song is popular, you know it's popular, which is comforting. Attacking a song that much fewer people like over and over, a song that by default you can expect a ton of people to say they hate, is kind of kicking people while they're down, rubbing their noses in it. I don't know if anybody was particularly emotionally invested in ILD here specifically (I'm bothered by the principle more than anything), but in general, it hurts a lot if you have something very niche that you love that doesn't get as much appreciation elsewhere, and then even here it's derided. It can make you lonely in a way that having a famous song you like attacked can't replicate, and that's something to really be careful about.

Two successful comebacks from the IX tracks today. Matches 1 and 4 were tight for most of the day, and Zephyr actually got out to a decent lead for a while! But Not Alone and Battle 3 had really strong back halves and Melodies had enough in the tank to win. Seymour's lead only grew throughout the day, a very impressive performance especially with how poorly X has done this round. Distant Worlds is eliminated here.

XIV went 0/2 today, meaning Stormblood is out and the game is down to 4 remaining tracks, now tied with VIII! But there's one day of the round left, with 2 VIII tracks and 1 XIV still in play...

That feel when your fav is keeping things close and then there's a 6-0 run against it at the end. Reminds me of the Ghoul turnaround, stab in the heart...

Buuut I also like Battle 3 so could be worse and also assumed whoever won would be fed to Seymour in R3, though maybe that's not a sure thing... I also thought Temporal Rift was keeping things closer there, damn. Another monster performance.

I look forward to 9 on 9 violence in R3 too. Surely Melodies gets Landing'd?

I'm glad YNA v Melodies came to pass, it was one of my hopes when they went into the division together. And IDK how it will turn out, I can see them attracting different fanbases and YNA hasn't looked comfortable in either of its wins...

I expect Seymour to win that whole division, but *shrug*
