Kaze no Ne puts up one heck of a fight but it isn't enough to stop it becoming the 6th and final (1) seed eliminated in the first round. There's only room for one CC game here, apparently. Big Bridge XIII-2 won't be joining its parent track in R2 but Force Your Way will be in the prestigious Double Track club. X has now lost 6 out of 7 matches in the lower half, with one to go.
Eiko v Silence remains very close all day and I thought we were heading for a tie, but a last minute vote sealed the deal for S&M and gave IX its first defeat since Day 1 of the contest!

Fun (or not so fun) fact: Kaze no Ne never actually led in votes through the whole match. It tied a few times and almost came back from a 6 vote deficit at the end, but was never ahead.

I'm sad Eiko's Theme lost (especially to a song I really hate) but I'm glad it made it into the contest in the first place, and that it at least came close!

well, i got 3/4 and tbh even though im a bit tired of price of freedom by now, there's worse songs for big bridge to lose to. far worse.

Well get used to being more tired of it, I'm not signing up for bracketmaker but if I had to predict semifinalists they'd be:

Winner of A Fleeting Dream vs. Clash on the Big Bridge
Winner of One-Winged Angel vs. The Extreme (how appropriate)
Ultima (I can dream)
Price of Freedom

Ok wow limiting myself to only 4 semifinalists was too tough... just as good a chance some of those 6 songs drops in R2 (Fleeting Dream vs. Dancing Mad is going to be tough)

i was laughing at you thinking Price of Freedom could beat To Zanarkand, but now it's looking like it might not even win this first round. weird. i don't even particularly like it but i thought it was like, literally the most popular FF song on board 8. Ultima also looks like an optimistic pick but i guess that part of the bracket is weak enough where it's possible.

The question is how many Round 1 squeakers were squeakers due to peak competition so could get a run going? That's what I'm hoping for Ultima, I mean MwtMG is legendary, if it could get past that maybe that's the biggest hurdle for a few rounds & it can keep going? But you could make that argument for a few other songs, and Ultima could just as easily lose to Tifa's Theme (though ideally not)

Conversely, which R1 stompings were due to song strength or weakness of the competition? I'm probably not giving Fight with Seymour enough credit but I've never even considered that my favourite Seymour battle theme...!

tbh before the contest i considered Big Bridge and To Zanarkand to be easily the two biggest contenders, with maybe an outside shot of a Seymour, Dancing Mad, Extreme, or an XIV song winning. lots of XIV songs i didn't know, it was very popular in nominations, and it had at least one song i really loved (Ultima) so i couldn't outright dismiss that possibility.

Go Chaos Shrine!! Match 2 could have gone either way. I kept relistening to the tracks as it was difficult to pick one that I liked slightly more, but both were meh.

We've been listening to To Zanarkand for 20 years, it's time for some fresh blood... well, fresher! But as beautiful as it is, it's "just" piano, I believe in the perfect violin/guitar fusion and the raw emotion it evokes.

Lots of people talked about this being a rough day, but despite that we got 4 pretty clear results. Aerith has to settle for 2/3, Zanarkand manages to handle Fight On without too much difficulty, Break the Limit puts in a very strong performance, and XIV solidifes its lead on the other games going into the next round.

And that's the end of round 1! Thank you to everybody who has participated so far, Round 2 will begin (with 4 matches!) in around 5 hours time.

And as people were talking about potential champions earlier, here are the biggest blowouts of the round:

Ultima and Answers are definitely my two favorites from XIV in some order with Extreme third and Ink Long Dry last. i liked Wayward Daughter and Insanity. did not like Long Fall or Weight of the World. Shadowbringers i really liked the composition a lot but the vocals kinda ruined it so it's hard to place. and i can't even remember Woe that is Madness at all, probably due to the trauma of it killing my favorite.

Shadowbringers alone has more songs in R2 than almost every other game lol (though two of them are remixes of songs originating in another title).

Big Bridge sends NieR back to its own dimension with a dominant performance, and next round it will meet Yusnaan which also put in a very solid showing today. The other two matches were much closer, Dream raced off to an 8 vote lead but Dancing clawed back through the day, cutting the lead down to 1 at one stage. But Dream never lost its lead, and neither did JENOVA in its very tight match. Lightning will have to make do with a single win today!

Yeah I'm not sure that result's too unexpected - Fleeting Dream has a few very loud detractors but it's always been pretty well-liked I thought. It even retired eventually!

Zanarkand and StDWE retired long ago, and I'm sure the userbase back then was quite different than what it is now, so I always wondered if they would still be able to retire today. So far, this contest has shown they would

It seems quite different from SMFFF, where the X characters who did very well in the past don't see much support in the newer era and require very dedicated supporters

Except... Last Hunter and Ghoul each lost 25-17, and Dancing Mad only lost 21-18 which is a 7.69% margin, but Ghoul is over 9% above Last Hunter?

Though I don't know how to do x-stats either, they look pretty good otherwise, but that's one thing that didn't seem right to me...

yeah that should be 37.36%
Good King Moggle Mog XII should be 11.54%
i'm guessing the rest that involve more than one calculation are also wrong. <_<

the way you do it is multiply the two numbers of the loser (numbers between 0 and 0.5) then multiply by 2
so for example 17/(17+25) * 18/(18+21) * 2 = 37.36% for Last Hunter
and if you're going more than 2 deep you keep multiplying by higher powers of 2
